Metallica was launched to national prominence from by Johnny and Marsha Z at flea market in East Brunswick and by the metal militia in Old Bridge, NJ both right down the road from Rutgers.

Virginia Tech forges a strong relationship with Metallica, using Enter Sandman as their stadium entry song. There is co-branded Metallica and VT shirts and gear.

Brett Pry presented the members of Metallica with VT Jerseys with their names on back. Metallica profusely thanked VT for making that song such a big deal for their program.

NJ is also home to Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, two of the biggest rock acts in the world. But Va Tech, in the middle of nowhere has Metallica in tow.

Meanwhile, RU's football entrance song remains a hodgepodge -sometimes Thunderstruck, sometimes whatever the Penn State guy feels like playing.

Rutgers could have and should have forged an identity with one of these artists. But as usual, Rutgers blew it. At least we have Click, Click Boom and a train horn for RU's identity.

Thread has gone off topic already. It's really about Rutgers" total ineptitude in the ability to establish an identity and leverage it as location to establish a relationship with that would bring positive attention and money.
I think that has already been established since the dawn of time.
We don’t capitalize on anything and anything we do always seems gimmicky
I would say the only thing in recent memory that has some identity is the Rutgers boardwalk.

There was a topic?

I did see an OP that included a hodge-podge of words, but there is definitely not a topic.

Seriously?

There is no way this would have turned at Rutgers into anything like the cool tradition it is at Virginia Tech.

There are decades of history that prove there is nothing that will get a significant portion of Rutgers fans to shut down their tailgate in time to make it to their seat by kickoff, let alone the player entrance 5-10 minutes earlier.

Metallica's association with New Jersey has always been very closeted. I've followed Metallica for "only" the past 37 years or so, and they've always been known as a band from Los Angeles. Sure they formed there, but they moved to New Jersey fairly early (82 maybe 83). During Metallica's rise NJ never claimed them and they never claimed NJ, but they sure included their Old Bridge peeps when inducted into the HoF.

You kind of forget that at the time we sucked. Cool entrance songs only work when there are people in the stands to go crazy. Night games help as well.

lol at "but as usual, Rutgers blew it". That could be said about a lot of things, but not this - swing and a miss.

Meh, this is something VT did that worked for them. Hasn't exactly done much for their on-field success.

"Ineptitude" on RU's part feels like a stretch. And we're better than them now.

Timing for VT in regard to Sandman was perfect
Vick years, National championship game, watered down Big East, 7 BCS bowls, Lunch pail mentality, stadium expansion, iconic coach, etc.
Credit to them they took advantage of it and took it to another level

Also a different mindset in that part of the country; it's applachia, but not WVU level
They're basically Texas A & M lite (very lite) in every concieable metric (sans success, as Aggie hasn't had nearly the same as VT)
Same colors, military school, rabid fanbase, 12th man type thing w/the fans, underdogs, 2nd school in state, etc.

I wish we would have "Livin on a Prayer" w/Sir Scarlett coming out like the UVA mascot does, and a completely Jersey theme
No more train horn, obnixous loud music all game, mish moshed entrance and overall game experience

I also wish the team came out to a 70 % filled stadium, but we've sucked for decades, and the kids now (and adults for that matter) don't arrive on time regardless of where they live in the country

So what. Let Rutgers create its own thing. I want to see Rutgers come out to Lil Uzi Vert I just want to rock
Agree, open to anything. We have a lot of great artists that claim NJ home. Pick one.

Disagree. Make it a thing, and they will come. Part of the problem is the game intro is a hodgepodge of crap. Maybe they will stick with the Sopranos thing, but that has become dated, and Tony Soprano is not with us any more. The entrance we have now would have been great to do while he was alive.

You kind of forget that at the time we sucked. Cool entrance songs only work when there are people in the stands to go crazy. Night games help as well.
I suppose. But the association with Va Tech has really gotten big lately, and they suck now.

It's not about on field success. One does not relate to another.

And will stick with ineptitude. I was not specifically advocating for Metallica now. That ship sailed a long time ago. There are many other artists who claim NJ as home. And @rurichdog is right about Metallica being a "LA" band, but even Metallica disowned LA.

It's not just about "the entrance". VT and Metallica turned this into a thing to make money for Va Tech, something every team sorely needs.

Since we have the horse entrance, and Springsteen loves, NJ maybe this could be the entrance song--it's a banger? 😂

Again, VT started doing Sandman in 2000.
Correspodning w/the Sugar Bowl NCG appearance, Vick hysteria, momentum, etc.

When we played them in the 80s/90s in Blacksburg, Lane was a dump
if they started doing it then, not saying it wouldn't have caught on, but the timing couldn't have been more perfect

Congrats to them though
They capitalized and now it's one of the more iconic entrances in college FB

RU Can create its own thing, but the penn state guy can never keep the same thing game to game. It's always changing, if they would come up with something original and stick with it, would be easier for everyone to catch on to and get hyped up. Back in schiano 1.0 it was always the song "bring em out" that the team came out to, every single game. Now, who knows...

What RU should do is, keep the Soprano's Video first, pan to the team in the locker room, horse video and keep the same music going "Heart of Courage" as it transitions to the team entering the top of the tunnel on the video board and then send the team out to Bruce Springsteen Born to Run with the train horn and the fireworks etc. Keep it simple and easy to catch on to. Get rid of the cringey announcer lead RU chant, its supposed to be organic and will happen when we are playing well. The night games, bring back the "All of the lights" by Kanye West and leave it at that. All the cringey in organic stuff can go. Keep it Jersey where possible, less train horn, let the band play more and it will be 10x better. No more stupid PSU influenced garbage.

He did do a great job of copying Wagner a few years later, good point
And brought it to GOAT heights.

That's just it, though. Springsteen would have been cool in the 80s, when we weren't.

Now? Our young fans couldn't name a song and half our old fans would "boycott" because of politics.

I thought he was over the hill in early 00's until I saw him in concert and became a lifelong fan. But by the time we were competive, I think ship had already sailed. ×1,000 for Bon Jovi.

And I do think you have to have some kind of on-field success to make something like that stick. No one's getting pumped for a 1-12 team.

VT made that happen when they were good and before Metallica was full-blown dad metal.

We should come out to Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer", because that's what I and many have been doing watching Rutgers football for over 3 decades.

We had the Knight Pulse for all of one season and psu douche cut it out.

Skip the first 1:29 below and play on the scoreboard when the team is coming down the tunnel. Fire the cannon when the video ends.

This is us:

Too bad the words are so foreign. It would've scared the crap out of the opponent hearing 50,000 fans scream that out.

Talking about it was so big Metallica made a tour stop at their stadium. Not many bands would do that, but Metallica are good to their fans. First concert at Lane Stadium ever.
