Rutgers would get slammed by local media flunkies for causing a natural disaster with their devil rock n roll.

Seriously?

There is no way this would have turned at Rutgers into anything like the cool tradition it is at Virginia Tech.

There are decades of history that prove there is nothing that will get a significant portion of Rutgers fans to shut down their tailgate in time to make it to their seat by kickoff, let alone the player entrance 5-10 minutes earlier.
Rutgers HAD a Metallica thing with For Whom Yhe Bell Tolls on third down. But that’s gone to 💩between the Penn State Guy’s ADHD/ADD/Tourettes inducing Bullcrap mix, the annoying PA Guy’s THHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDD DOWN, and the 13 second train horn.

Metallica was launched to national prominence from by Johnny and Marsha Z at flea market in East Brunswick and by the metal militia in Old Bridge, NJ both right down the road from Rutgers.

Virginia Tech forges a strong relationship with Metallica, using Enter Sandman as their stadium entry song. There is co-branded Metallica and VT shirts and gear.

Brett Pry presented the members of Metallica with VT Jerseys with their names on back. Metallica profusely thanked VT for making that song such a big deal for their program.

NJ is also home to Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, two of the biggest rock acts in the world. But Va Tech, in the middle of nowhere has Metallica in tow.

Meanwhile, RU's football entrance song remains a hodgepodge -sometimes Thunderstruck, sometimes whatever the Penn State guy feels like playing.

Rutgers could have and should have forged an identity with one of these artists. But as usual, Rutgers blew it. At least we have Click, Click Boom and a train horn for RU's identity.

Rutgers Athletics and “botched” seem to be synonymous. ☹️

Metallica's association with New Jersey has always been very closeted. I've followed Metallica for "only" the past 37 years or so, and they've always been known as a band from Los Angeles. Sure they formed there, but they moved to New Jersey fairly early (82 maybe 83). During Metallica's rise NJ never claimed them and they never claimed NJ, but they sure included their Old Bridge peeps when inducted into the HoF.
I saw them at the old Fountain Casino in Aberdeen open for Twisted Sister when they were touring in support of their debut album. I believe TS had just released "You Can't Stop Rock and Roll". I was underage but my sister, who was legal, knew a bouncer who let me the back door. This was '83 I think, maybe early '84

Those same VT fans, who get to their seats 30-minutes prior to kickoff - specifically the student section - are gone by the start of the 4th quarter (specifically during day games) EVEN IN tight contests. We witnessed it last September.

Who cares? The point was that Rutgers could never pull off anything pregame, not to measure fan support between the schools.

1) either they’ve been drinking for 12 hours at that point, or…

2) they’ve been sitting in direct sunlight as it’s coming down over the other end of the stadium for 3+ hours at that point. We saw it when we played there in September. It was a mass Xxoo us and the people sitting next to us said that happens about 90% of all home games.

I think you completely missed the point I was making. Apparently more often than most student section is 75% empty for the 4th quarter. Now, when would you rather have your students there, 30 minutes prior to the game or during the fourth quarter?

BTW - don’t get me wrong. I was in my seat 30 minutes before kickoff. The build up to the entrance, and the entire entrance, plus the continued singing of the song is absolutely phenomenal!!!

For many students at universities in the South and Midwest, college football games are social events, like frat parties.

After three hours or so, the students get bored and leave. Many if not most care more about the social side that the play on the field.

For example, my sister and my niece attended Clemson. During their time there, they lived for the Clemson football games despite having no prior interest in the sport. I doubt they know who Dabo Swinney is.

My sister ran the Boston Clemson alumni club for a few years. When I asked what she did, she said she rented out a bar to watch Clemson football games. I asked what else she did. Answer was nothing.

So? They still have an epic entrance, Metallica and co-branded Metallica merchandise.. We have a train horn, a 3/4 empty stadium at kickoff, and even emptier I'm the 4rh Quarter. And RUnis better than VT on the field. Someone in athletics is failing to capitalize on an opportunity.

Never said they didn’t have an epic entrance. If you’re written my second post in this thread, you would see I feel just the opposite.

Keep in mind the competition Rutgers sports faces.

Rutgers has 25 major league sports teams within 250 miles. Virginia Tech has one, the Carolina Hurricanes.

To be sure, Rutgers athletics is not the best on taking advantage of opportunities. World Cup coming to New Jersey and, unlike 1994, no effort from Rutgers to get teams training on campus.

No grass. And Yurcak probably isn't up to snuff.

It’s 232 miles from Blacksburg to Raleigh…. More than New York to Boston. Nobody is driving that far.
Virginia Tech has no real Sports Team anywhere near them. Total monopoly on Sports. They should have SRO crowds every game.

But they’re there by kickoff.
