OT: Newark airport

Wife flies out of Newark tomorrow morning to Atlanta. when we searched about a month ago- flights out of Phil were super expensive and only crappy airlines like Frontier and Spirit were showing up. I search now and American has some really good direct flights. sucks, because I would have booked that for her. Philly is only 50 minutes or so from me and Newark is over 2 hours.
the main reason we also tend to select EWR is because she is very familiar with the airport and she does not know the Phily airport at all.
We also both have the United Plus Cards so she gets the early boarding and club access. She may be checking a bag as she will be there a week and with the UCC - she can check it free.

Crossing fingers there are no delays

Seems the issue is largely due to 20%+ ATC walking off the job this week, and 1 runway being closed:

"United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says more than 20% of Newark's air traffic controllers "walked off the job" this week, forcing the airline to indefinitely remove nearly three dozen round-trip flights from its Newark schedule per day."

" Newark officials say it is due to air traffic control staffing issues and construction on one of the runways."

We are headed out to Iceland at the end of this month from EWR. It is a late night flight, so hoping that will help us. Sounds like the runway issues should be resolved before your July flight.

Flew United 3x from EWR this year, twice international and one domestic with no issues. Checked a bag every time for free w United card and went to lounge twice. I have a non-United intl flight coming up in the next few weeks, will see how it goes.

Since you are from Hillside do you remember the 3 plane crashes in Elizabeth in the 1950's. I believe at least 1 was near the Hillside border close to the Westminster section of Elizabeth.

Flying to Richmond on Monday morning.

Was feeling good until the latest dissertation of EWR typical nonsense - I just assume I will be a minimum of 60 to 90 minutes delayed

We are flying to Iceland and doing a couple days around Reykjavik and then getting on cruise up to Svalbard and then down the Norway fjords to Copenhagen. Packing is going to be a *****….

My daughter and her boyfriend are currently waiting their turn to takeoff to Portland. Flight was originally scheduled to leave at 5:30.

Finally took off at 8:10

United just sent a text for my wife’s morning flight about the ATC walking off the job and potential of delays, camels and if needed, she can’t change flights at no cost. Crossing fingers she doesn’t need to

Originally was supposed to go to Norfolk, but there was a connection in DC so I opted for Richmond instead. You’re right though, going to Richmond by car would be faster, but then having to drive another hour and a half down in Norfolk and then 7 1/2 hours back would be kind of brutal.

It’s 6.5 hr drive if you take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

We got that yesterday too. Got the wife to EWR at 5:30 this morning all departures on-time and she got out without a hiccup. 4 mins early
I’m not liking term C. I wanted to wait for her to get through TSA and into Untied Club before leaving. Since we are 2.5 hours away. There used to be some restaurants outside of the gate area and now just a crappy Dunkin Donutes and Starbucks- nothing else
But, at least no problems for her flight

As we reported in our statement of April 30th, Dr. David Prezant, Chief Medical Officer, Director, FDNY World Trade Center Health Program, was not able to provide cancer care starting on Monday, April 28th, to members of his clinic who had developed cancer because the WTCHP program would not let him. Not only Dr. Prezant, but all of the NY-area clinics, reported that they could no longer provide treatment for new cancer cases.

We moved back to Newark in 1938.BTW. Phil Rizzuto lived in the Westminster area. I was substitute teaching at Saybrook school,in that area ,and noticed,before the kids came into the room,that Phil's daughter was in that 5th grade class.I had printed my name on the board and when the kids had come in and had taken their seats I introduced myself ,pointed to the board and pronounced my name.One of the boys raised his hand and asked me if I liked baseball.I said that -I did and added"But I hate the Yankees". The entire class went" OOOH" ! When the class had settled down I pointed to Phil's daughter and said that I knew who she was and that I actually liked the Yanks. Finn time back in the DAY.

It's not just repaving, I've heard that they are also upgrading the lights and other things along/around that runway.

So this is a local 1 airport issue not some national staffing one lol.

I hate EWR and always fly out of PHL when possible.

Drive.. if Me i would. You like to anyway, no? Baltimore, Boston.. Richmond is that much more.

OK I see this was already discussed. Another cheaper option is to go down eastern shore and go over Annapolis bridge and take 301 south into Richmond. Free save a toll on route 1 express in Delaware.

This is the problem with blanket percentage headcount reductions. This is common practice in the private sector as well. New CEO comes in and tells the company every department needs to cut 20% of staff and has a couple days to make decisions. Fast forward a year and sales and revenue crater as the business is now dysfunctional.

Are you equal distance between the two? I haven’t had any issues out of EWR. It’s not a local issue because it’s EWR. It will have ripple effects. I flew to Europe in March and Indy in April. No issues. Flying to Charleston later this month. Will see how that goes.

You do realize they've been having issues since last year (not to this extent) when they moved airspace control of the Newark area from Newark to Philly, they relocated over a dozen air traffic controllers in the change. This was supposed to ease the burden on Newark but didn't. Now you add in the 20% walkout because they didn't like how things were being run after the move, coupled with runway construction and here we are. This had nothing to do with DOGE.

When I lived up the road from @DHajekRC84 it was a toss up between PHL and EWR. Depended on flight time, destination, etc. Used PHL mainly for years but EWR being a United hub eventually won out. Hopefully they get this all straightened out

50 to phl and 1.15 to Newark. When I said local I ment just the departure thing. You're right as a hub it has other significant impacts.
My DIL and grandson were supposed to return today. Canceled and coming back tomorrow.

Put this and the read I'd thing together..yikes!! Flying out sat am for Sunday cruise (miami). .. ought to be fun..
