The man almost died. What a positive message and expression of gratitude to be alive.

My friend Pete Santiago, one of Matt's closest friends (Matt and Pete DJ-ed our wedding), told me at the Melody Reunion on Saturday night that he's been talking to Matt almost every day since he came out of his coma and that the improvement has been nothing short of a miracle.

By the way, they had this one at the Kefi Ballroom space (the old Perle nightclub on Bayard St in NB) and it was really nice with a huge dancefloor, great lighting, lots of areas to hang out, and a great soundsystem - would highly recommend to anyone looking to throw a decent sized party. Big thanks to @InGregITrust for coming through with the offer of the space after the sale of the Elks.

Cool clip - hadn't seen that. Another artist created the painting, below, of the Melody bar, which now hangs in our living room by the pool table. Very good friends of ours won it at a silent auction they had (I think they outbid us, lol) at one of the reunions about 12 years ago and gave it to us as a gift, which was very cool. Should probably take a better pic of it...

Was the artist the one with the legendary fingernails?

No, not her, although she still has the legendary 24"+ fingernails and is at every reunion. The artist who did that painting is another longtime regular who was a model back in the day.

Wasn't there a local rock station that Matt DJ'd on in the late 2000's? I'm sure it's long gone now. I don't live in the area anymore

It was earlier-1984-94
WHTG, FM 106.3 Modern Rock at the Jersey Shore.

He then went to MTV to host 120 Minutes

From 2008-11 he had the morning show on WXRP 101.9 in NYC

It must have been XRP I was thinking of. That's the time frame I lived up that way

Matt's recovery has been nothing short of amazing. My wife and I got to catch up with him and host of other folks from back in the day back in October when he came home to visit and showed up at Pino's (in HP) to do some very cool covers with the band Kanak. He was walking with a cane, gingerly at times and now he's jogging when they never thought he'd ever walk again. Here's the Sonics, "Have Love Will Travel," courtesy of our good friend Pete Santiago (one of the Melody DJs and Matt's best friend from way back). The set also included It's All Over Now by the Stones (a Bobby Womack tune, actually), Psychotic Reaction (the Count Five), We Got to Get Out of This Place by the Animals (written by Brill Building folks), The Kids Are Alright (Who), Sonic Reducer (Dead Boys), and closing with Molly's Lips (more the Nirvana version vs. the Vaselines original). Fun night.

Was going to post a thread. RIP to a pioneer
Do the post. You, me and numbers, who seems to spend little time here, may be the only 3 who know or care.

I remember so many of his interviews. THIS one is a favorite with Henry Rollins. I remember sitting in my house (then in Wilmington, NC) watching this and thinking about what great questions he asked. Whether you like Henry Rollins or not, this a great piece on why he makes music as a form of therapy. Kendall thinks the song Low Self Opinion is negative, but Henry points out about find positivity in a negative situation. Interview starts at about 18:55.

I also recently learned that Lewis Largeant another big fixture on 120 Minutes in the early to mid 90s also passed away a year or 2 back..actually 3

Matt is a true survivor.

On a new podcast, he talks about surviving an aneurysm at 15 years old, getting hit by a car and having a stroke. Music got him through.

I think you're underestimating those who might care. We get a lot of participation in pretty much any type of music thread. Summer is just the dead time for the board.

Growing up, I got a tremendous musical education from both 120 Minutes and Headbangers Ball.

I'm tremendously enjoying the podcast I posted above with Matt Pinfield. Those shows were a big part of my music experience and introduction to music that was new to me.

Dave Kendall was a giant in the "alternative" rock world - sad to see him go. For those interested, there's another Melody Reunion, which will feature Matt and a few others spinning, on 8/14 at the Elks in NB and the next night there will be some good bands (Kanak, Anderson Council) at the Elks and Matt will be doing a few songs with Kanak.

Just not very interested in this place anymore apart from a few OT threads (like the WC thread and threads like this one) and I think I'll always enjoy the away game gameday threads. Pretty sure I'm done with weather here, though, unless they do something about the trolling - I do enough on weather on TOS, FB and my email lists to keep me busy and engaged on that topic.
