OT: Wildfire \ GSP closed

It’s been so dry and we probably need more controlled burns—and stop jerks from throwing out cigarette butts and other stupid things.
They can throw them on my POA grass.
Task force called from Monmouth County. Our department is en route.
Saw it as I was heading back east on Rt 70 from Cherry Hill. Didn't know if it was a brush fire or a controlled burn. Now I know.
I have family in Waretown that need to evacuate. They are pretty scared. Only gonna have more of this in the future. It sucks.
Dude, late March to early May is peak forest fire season in New Jersey. This is nothing out of the norm except that it happened so close to the GSP.
100% correct. In Northwest Nj over the last few months it seems that we have had a fair amount of rain including about 2 1/2 inches of snow a few weekends ago.

Rained so much here in South Monmouth, the wheel barrow I left upright in backyard was overflowing. Last ride in the Allaire woods, it is a little bit muddy.
POA is a weed that infests lawns in the Spring.

Yea but there has been a large uptick in fires (amount and aces) the past couple years.
I wouldn’t say this is all “normal”, especially since a lot of these are started by man.

A little surprised at the wildfires, given recent rains over the past month or so, but it doesn't take much low humidity and warm weather with winds to ratchet that risk up. With increased humidity and light winds containment should be near complete soon. Fascinating satellite view of the fire from the NWS...

This might be the biggest fire in NJ in 20 years.
I live in Los Angeles County and I am familiar with fires. We were evacuated during the Eaton Fire. My house was fine but we know many who lost their homes. We also lost our homeowner's insurance since our company pulled out of CA 5 months earlier. My prayers go out to the victims. As a 20 year former Jersey resident, I am shocked to hear this.

I think the state’s wildland fire organizations are pretty well coordinated around the country. A big piece of the problem lies with private land owners willingness to create fire safe environments around their homes and to participate in fuels management (prescribed fire and mechanical treatments) on their larger parcels. And of course fire prevention must be taken seriously by the public.
But there also needs to be an understanding that the pine barrens is a fire dependent ecosystem. No doubt that there were much larger fires in the distant past. Natural fire has played a big role in perpetuating the vegetation there, and the wildlife that depends on it. Thor’s a need to learn to live with it.
And all that is exactly what we deal with in the western states.
Ummm Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station was shut down in late 2018. Try harder next time!

There's spent fuel stored on-site, and will for thousands of years unless a centralized plan is developed & implemented.

That's not fair dude. I won't argue against his point because it's valid: firebugs gonna firebug. Nonetheless, wildfires that swallow up 20,000 acres of pineland is a nuisance. Build structures (houses, businesses, livestock barns, etc) in that pineland and it becomes a problem. Build a lot of structures and it becomes a big problem, especially since not all fires start by man's hand.
The spent fuel isn't stored at ground level in the bushes, next to 5 gallons gas cans. Maybe go back to yesterday's press conference for real answers! Last line was "there is no danger".

i thought we had a very robust controlled burn program here in NJ. I'm always smelling the smoke and getting notices about them
When you find out this fire was started by a 19 year old arsonist , who created a bonfire and left while it burned , is so outrageous and sad. He’ll get a slap on the wrist.Caused massive threats to homes, businesses and the general public for what? How much is this going to cost the taxpayers? This certainly could have been substantially worse had someone died.
Best wishes in getting FEMA to help. Arkansas was hit with several tornadoes in March and April, FEMA has denied assistance to help recover from the devastation. Of course appeals are taking place. But with Arkansas being a red state with Sarah Huckabee as governor, many thought that FEMA would come through. Evidently not.
Those 609er's are definitely a different type of breed.
