St. Johns had $4 million for NIL

Talent evaluation without money to give that talent will make you go get players that require no money. You have no idea what players Rutgers had conversations with. Once players that can get money heard that we have none what will they do? Not come here is what they will do. We are in the age of basketball that the teams with no money have un even rosters. We got two players for free lost 2 key pieces and got commitments from players with no NIL.
Your argument collapsed when you didn’t mention Malique Ewin. Who was all but committed, asked for a little bit more which we had, and out of pride we wouldn’t negotiate with him saying “we’ll get another center then”. Bad move.

Anyone who thinks Ace and Dylan did not get $ associated with Rutgers is most likely clueless. The only things we KNOW is they have outside deals also, and we know they got part of the $1M from Vegas, which is RU $. I'm sure they got other too.

Who told you we had? How much have you donated to NIL?

Ummm no.

Why are you not understanding that most of their money was from outside of Rutgers, was earmarked by the entity for them and couldn’t be used on other players.

If they don’t come here then we’re not getting $ from Fanatics, NIKE etc.

That doesn’t mean you don’t take these 2 type of players lol.

That means you then go out and raise $ to build a strong roster to compliment them, and align with our coaching philosophy, which we failed to do.

This failure was on both the coaching staff and boosters.
Duh I know it came from outside sources...yet this $3 million put RU overall in better shape than many of its peers right off the bat

Plus another $1million from Vegas starts it at $4 million plus whatever else RU had

It was discussed often by the moderators of this board. They know more than me. Just know I have and have to my ability to. How much is none of your business. Can’t stay on topic can you? That means you lost the argument.

Okay.

I have no idea what point(s) your’re trying to make then.

But the thought that we shouldn’t have taken Dylan and Ace is a really stupid one, lol.

I'm saying you have to factor their $3 million plus another $1 million from Vegas whether it came from RU or not

Most schools aren't handed $4 million

Except this thread was about St. John’s.

I’ll go back to my original statement which you’re not grasping.

Their $4 million is much different than our $3.5 million.

Also stop bringing up the Vegas $ this wasn’t finalized until well after the roster was constructed and settled.

It was more than rumored which means Pike could pitch that
And if the college athletes have agents like pros do they probably wanted their compensation up front and not a promise of pay down the road

All this bonus crap is from the same people who don’t believe $$ is an issue with the program as to why we struggle

If you’re using the 3 mil deal which was EXCLUSIVE for Dylan and ace and not money we will ever see again and 1 mil for the Vegas tourney which we never would be invited to without those two and probably won’t get invited to again after next season we have a pot to piss in budget wise

I wonder how many MBB outside of Rutgers believe that Ace and Dylan passed up the additional millions available at other schools, so they could play one year for our storied basketball ball school? So many bs excuses here about lack of nil. Fact is, Pike had a $3.5 mil payroll to work with.

I doubt we spent much on players not named Dillon and Ace if anything. There is no number of what we had to spend outside of those two players. All we have is speculation on two sites that out NIL was very low and especially in basketball. We got transfers from lower levels coming up to this level of basketball. To me that sounds like we had nothing. Who did we beat out for our transfer players? No one of significance and especially not other Big Ten teams.
You think Somerville came to RU for nothing?

They got that 1million from Vegas games before those games were played,?? If not then that million was not avaible for NIL money to secure players before season started. Now the excuse makers seem to be using a novel excuse -- we have all the money we need so why should I donate.

As of February 2025, Villanova basketball player Eric Dixon's NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deal was estimated to be worth $1.7 million. This makes him one of the highest-paid college basketball players.

are we paying players so they can be drafted in the nba or is it to take schools to the ncaa tourney
The article’s author describes himself as a Las Vegas based actor and circus performer. I did learn Eric is 24 years old.

Who had close to 4million? By the way the same 2 draft pick guys you attack for not securing more wins or playing bad D were not paid by RU. Who's dumb enough to think the same dollars would have be " given " to RU for anybody else. And by the way many honest folk remember the players who either transferred to RU pre NIL or were recruited by Pike that did very well here. As well as those who were close to coming here. To say Pike is not a good evaluator is BS.
He’s not ! He’s awful! Look at any of his players that transfer. They go from 25-32 min at Ru to bench players struggling for minutes.
Currently Lathan is the only power 4 player on next years roster and he can not guard a traffic cone. Year 10 and Pike has 1 Power 4 player on his roster

Yes. I have low conviction in the accuracy of NIL figures.

For example, trace the $1.7 million back to original source. On3 projects NIL value over the next 12 months when Eric will no longer be a college basketball player. He has a few weeks of college ball remaining.

The On3 info shows Eric’s value is less than $1.5 million.

The “journalist” should go back to his job at the circus.

Ace and Dylan essentially have endorsement contracts with Fanatics and other entities, not an NIL deal. It’s more like LeBron signing a deal with Gatorade; it doesn’t matter what team he’s on and its not part of the salary cap.

It’s even more impressive we landed them because we essentially recruited them the old fashioned way, not through an NIL buy.

Our NIL fund, which is what this thread is about, is woefully inadequate at around 1M for the entire roster.

It’s fun to make fun of SHU for having no NIL, but we’re in the same boat going forward and both teams are going to be left behind.

The NIL excuse is really lame.
First, it was mentioned numerous times that we had money for a center if we wanted one. Second, regardless of the NIL situation our first addition in the portal was an Ivy League PF who got dominated in B1G play. I don’t care if we had zero NIL money or not. There’s no way that was our best available option. We had poor player evaluation and people need to start admitting that.
Our NIL situation may not be towards the top of the pack, but there’s no way we should have done this poorly in the portal

That wasn’t factored In their NIL this season but certainly going forward
It’s well known St. John’s has a billionaire donor which we don’t so tough comparison anyhow
Vitamin water St. John’s 1 billionaire
Fantatics and Nike Rutgers 2 billionaires

Those are the 3 large corporate donors for the two schools.

Now are we all smart enough to understand if Pike delivered this year with Ace and Dylan that Rubinstein and Knight might be inclined to build a reciprocal relationship with RU on future recruits ?

If it benefited them financially they would continue to work with us in the Big ten and NY market.

Pike dropped the ball!

The Fanatics money doesn’t go to Rutgers. It makes it easier to recruit those guys because if they already have that deal then they will care less about incremental NIL but it isn’t the same as having $3m in a Rutgers collective.

There will be other players in the future with similar deals that we can in theory recruit, that doesn’t make the money Rutgers money.

lol no

I mean, that’s what it’s supposed to be but most of them are just player salaries with some token “endorsement deal” to make it legal.

There is absolutely a huge distinction between legitimate endorsement deals like Ace/Dylan have and whatever ******** we’re using to pay guys like Acuff for example.

NIL is broken into two categories now, endorsement deals independent of a school fund (what Ace and Dylan have) and school-aligned NIL pools.

HUGE difference between the two. The first is aligned solely with the player, with the lucrative deals reserved primarily for only elite NBA-bound players. The second is driven by school initiatives and/or unofficial school NIL pools. This fund is the “hollistic” fund that the school, donors, and fanbase can control to compensate the whole roster and deploy to maintain roster integrity and to bring in key pieces that may not be at the elite NBA level. Essentially, this is the pool RU needed to properly fund to bring in the adequate supporting cast for Ace and Dylan, and we dropped the ball.

All schools do this and it’s no different than what St. John’s does with vitamin water . It’s Name Image and Likeness money being paid to RU players. If Pike didn’t F&$ it up we could continue to work with Fanstics Nike and others.

If Pitino was coaching do you think he would convince Nike and Fanatics to support the program in future recruits and portal transfers??

If money is independent of the school the player is at it seems silly to count it as “money on the court”. It’s essentially the difference between salary and outside endorsements, Ace/Dylan could’ve gone to Mississippi Valley St and gotten the same money, it doesn’t instantly make Mississippi Valley St an NIL powerhouse

?? It is completely different, Fanatics has no relationship with us and is just supporting the players

Rutgers had two elite freshmen who will be playing in the NBA next season.Pitino is a Hall of Fame coach who is able to win at a high level wherever he has coached.St.Johns will be playing in the NCAA Tournament and Rutgers will be in Piscataway.
A week from now ace and Dylan will be moved out of Piscataway
