A lot of fool's gold to sift through. Cignetti lit it up this year. And Prime turned it around this year. He got a great QB recruit. Will both coaches have sustained success? Time will tell.
At this level I say no. It’s year to year for most teams but can they be decent more years than not, I think that is realistic and possible. Whether it happens or not, who knows.

Rutgers football was acceptable for what it was under Frank Burns.. then expectations (and competition) increased to a point where it was not.

Graber waffled between hope and dashed hopes over and over into unacceptable territory.

Shea could not recover and made things worse.

Schiano 1.0 earned actual respect for Rutgers Football but had his failures too. He parlayed it into a promotion to the NFL.

Flood inherited a respected program and ran it back into disrespected territory.

Ash made it worse.

Schiano 2.0 has made progress in bringing it back. It is acceptable now and, hopefully soon will be respected again.

I do not find it reasonable to assume we need to hold a standard of Top 25 finish every season. Surely that is a worthy goal, a possibly achievable goal.. but it will take a lot of work.'

Even if we had Indiana's season this year with a first-year coach like Cignetti or Sanders, we'd have no idea how long that would last. We do not know what the buyout option is for Cignetti after his extension. It was not made public.... which is suspicious. My guess would be that it reveals that Indiana committed a lot of money toward Cignetti, but Cignetti kept his options open.

"Respectable" got us into the Big Ten.

"Respectable" puts fans in the seats.

I think that is a good achievable goal and will not have us playing games in the coaching carousel looking to strike gold while most do not not strike gold. Look at Rutgers past coaches.. we have done far worse than what we have more often than not.

Now.. if we had Shea/Ash-level coaching still.. sure, spin that wheel again and again and hope for the best.

I think most RU alums/fans understand that Schiano has made a difference and has made the program competitive and respectable. When he was rehired, I. believe most thought he would raise the floor and get the program respectable. However that is not the goal (as GS has stated over and over again). I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect RU can at least get to 8 wins/winning B1G conference record from time to time. That hasn’t happened and in my opinion, needs to happen in the next 2 years. HCs at this level do not get 8-10 years to get to a winning, major bowl game level and increasingly making the expanded playoff will become the measuring stick.

As usual, you have a well-reasoned and very reasonable statement of expectations.
The excuses are running out ( We are young, we are a developmental football program, we are banged up, one coaching decision away from a win, etc.). Greg himself he came here to play in the CFP. If seven years in we are not there or at least ranked in the top 20 end of season, it may be time to move on.

In addition to Sumrall, Matt Campbell and Rhett Lashlee mentioned for UNC.

Lashlee is in the middle of a potential playoff run and SMU is just in the first year of the ACC and can win it. Not sure why he’d leave SMU. It’s got all he needs.

Campbell and Sumrall are in the middle of potential playoff runs too but could see them leave if they happen to fall out of it.

Barry Odom, Fleck, Mullen, Chadwell are some other names mentioned.

Other head coaches don’t get 8-10 years because only here is mediocrity the goal. Were that not true, he would not have gotten the long term contract, the raise after 6-6 and the extension. Mack Brown 2.0, also a favorite son, got fired with a better record over the last 5 years than our guy, whose seat is ice cold. Tells you all you need to know about which program aims high and which has bottom rung goals.

A lot of speculation on Neal Brown at WVU, lost 52-15 to TT. 6-6/5-4…hovering around .500 for his tenure there.
And yet Schiano walks on water…sure seems like Rutgers has lower expectations than everyone else.

Not a good year to be HC Brown. First Don, now Neal. Is there a Bob?

I wasn’t sure if Rich Rod would be realistic but he would be cheaper and has done a nice job at Jackson St…..Fisher is anothe name I’ve seen and would come cheap too after A&M buyout l.

UNLV's Barry Odom is rumored to be a top candidate WV is looking at.
I could see him pop up for a few openings but if they beat Boise in the MWC title game that could put a damper on things. It would be similar to when Fritz was at Tulane and the opportunity for the GT job get messed up because of the AAC title game and new years bowl. That wasn’t even the playoffs like this would be.

We play in the B1G… Context matters…. JFC
Sure, no one expects us to become OSU, Michigan, PSU or USC. But is 6 or 7 wins the goal? Does last year’s 6-6/3-6 justify 2 more years added to the remaining 4?

UNC and WVU fired their coaches. Compare their records to Schiano’s and then tell me why Schiano is still here ? And you can’t say ‘the length of the contract’ because he never deserved it in the first place.

So go ahead, explain. Chris Ash LOL ?

This isn’t about OSU, etc. This is about lower standards than all other programs, especially other similarly mediocre programs. Even those programs aim higher and don’t tolerate average. We do.

From Wikipedia, on his tenure at Colorado (Another example of going overboard after 1 years of success--ADs never learn!):

Everything came together for Colorado in 2016. MacIntyre was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for 2016[39] after the Buffaloes were picked to finish last in the division prior to the season. He was awarded the Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award becoming the second Colorado coach to earn the award,[40] on a team led by his first recruiting class, assembled just weeks after his hire.[41] He was also awarded the ESPN Home Depot Coach of the Year Award
On January 10, 2017, MacIntyre signed a 5-year, $16.25 million contract with Colorado that would have seen him under contract with the Buffaloes through the 2021 season.[44] As it turned out, MacIntyre's tenure in Boulder crested at that point. In 2017, the Buffaloes crumbled to 4–7, including 2–7 in Pac-12 play–a mirror image of the previous season in conference play.

In 2018, the Buffaloes started out the season 5–0 with wins against rivals Colorado State, Nebraska, Arizona State, and UCLA.[45] On November 18, 2018, MacIntyre was fired as the head coach after a six-game losing streak

Have seen fans crabbing about Brown at WVU. Problem with WVU, is they are kind of like shall I say Nebraska? Their glory days are long past. I mentioned Rich Rod in this week's thread, but as you mentioned, he has issues, and this from his Wikpedia page (maybe he could run for office with those favorability ratings?) 😉 :

"An opinion poll in September 2013 by Public Policy Polling found that 47% of West Virginia voters still had an unfavorable opinion of him, with only 11% seeing him favorably."
In the land of west Virginia feuds die hard.

I think a comparison with Illinois and their coach regarding results is fair. That is one reason that loss aggravates me.

Syracuse also had a good season under a new coach. Both schools had a similar strength of schedule last time I looked

I am generally a Schiano fan overall but he does have weaknesses

This thread is a coaching carousel thread about coaches leaving or getting fired. The troll pollutes nearly every thread with its rants on the same topics. Respectfully request that it be ignored and this thread stay on topic. Thank you.
