You don’t think they are persuaded to favor the blue bloods in B1G football games then you have not been watching many games.
I watch a lot of games. If you seriously think the refs are told who to favor, then why do you watch any games? Why waste your time pursuing something that you believe is blatantly rigged against you? Why would they ever make questionable calls against Michigan if their objective out there is to make sure they win? In what percentage of games is Rutgers the one that they are told to favor? Or are the refs only told to always make sure Rutgers loses? Such a ridiculous argument.

The refs are certainly not told to favor one team. However, they aren’t dumb and know which outcome is better for the league that evaluates and pays them.

Exhibit A is the 2007 Backyard Brawl game with the NC game at stake for WVU. At that time after the defections the BE was fighting for credibility, national relevance and NC game consideration. Infamous game. Refs called everything imaginable against Pitt, called TDs back, late flags from refs with different coverage far away from the plays, etc.

Blatant. WVU stunk that night and lost anyway but the intent was obvious. Conference embarrassment. Look it up. WVU fans admitted it after the game and many said they didn’t want to win and get in the NC in such a tainted way.

So, follow the money. It IS in the best interest of a conference to have certain late season, high profile games that matter nationally.

Broadcast revenues are massive. Conferences are in the entertainment business and rely on providing compelling inventory. Do the math.

Refs are not blind to that.

Fixed ? No. Favored, absolutely.

They're not blind to it, but there isn't much of an incentive for the refs to skew the games--an outcome that is more financially lucrative for the league doesn't mean it's more lucrative for the officials. They get paid a flat rate per game, it's not like they are executives who receive some sort of profit-sharing. Every call is graded after every game by an independent evaluator, and if their evaluations aren't good enough, they get assigned fewer games or they get assigned to games in lower leagues that pay less. The independent evaluator has no incentive to skew the ref's grades based on which team winning is better for the conference.

As for what is better for the league--do you know what would be huge for the Big Ten? A team in the NYC market being competitive in the toughest division in the country, especially while the NFL teams in the area are struggling, so if the refs are concerned with what helps the conference, why are they (according to some on this forum) apparently making it a point to hurt Rutgers every single week?

And again I ask--why do you ref conspiracy theorists waste your time following something that you feel is so unfair? Literally every week this season there's been people on here claiming that the refs were out to get Rutgers, so why do you continue to watch?

Did the refs prevent Rutgers from not scoring for 59 minutes?
Ummmm. Yes
On our second possession a 40 yard run by Kyle was nullified by a BS made up holding call by the Refs.
We would have scored on that possession and momentum on the game would have changed.

It really set the tone for the run game. Ridiculous call there.

The timing of that holding call was huge in the game. We're up 7-0, force a three and out, and rip off a huge run to set up what should be 1st down near midfield. Nope, fake holding call makes it 1st and 20 at our 11. Who knows how things play out if we are up 10 or 14 after that possession?

Oh well.

IMHO there is a subconscious bias that occurs when one team is a blue-blood program.
When Rutgers (or any less respected program) begins rolling, there is an inclination to look for a holding violation a bit harder. How else’s to explain the success against the superior defense. We all know you can find a hold on almost every play if you look hard enough. And I’ve you are looking for one you may even see holding when it’s not really there. All subconscious, but it definitely happens.

Right. Look, it’s no guarantee that we finish the drive and score a TD there, but IF we do, we’re suddenly up 14-0. Even if Michigan’s offensive game flow continued on in identical fashion to what played out, everything on our end would’ve changed. Up 14-7, Schiano is kicking that 46 yard FG. The 51 yarder was just short. It would’ve been good from 46. Then we’re up 17-14. Then if you think about the second FG situation, having made a 46 yarder, with a 17-17 tie game, we’re definitely attempting the 45 yarder to try for the 20-17 lead with 4:30 to go in the 3rd.

Ok - so then from there, Michigan scores the TD on the 5 minute drive to go up 24-20 with 14:30 to go. Rutgers ball. Again - at 4th and 6 from the 19, we’re probably kicking the FG with 8-9 minutes to go in the game. Theoretically it could be 24-23 with a chance to get a stop and only need a FG to pull the upset in Q4.

It’s amazing to me that we have fans complaining about our offense in this game. We only punted 3 times against the number 2 team in the country. Once was in the series with that brutal holding penalty. Another was the drive immediately following the gut wrenching pick 6.

Strange that you are hanging your hat on this play. It kind of makes you look like just a blow hard with no clue.
If you were using either “whistle” play- then they could be argued.
The hold call, was complete BS and not even close. And it completely changed the game.
Now, if you only want to make the point, if we were moving the ball with such ease then, we shouldn’t let this call make it so that we could never move it again…we’ll, that there is the real question.

disagree, he needs to be even more vocal about it
something needs to be done about officiating in the BIG as it's terrible and seemingly always favor Michigan and OSU
Schiano needed to throw a fit over the calls to the point being tossed. Trust me that shows officials up & they watch their P's & Q's afterward.

home audience and sideline reporters are the correct avenues?
look if it was me, I'd of pulled the team off the field and created a major issue until that **** stops. You want to see the league panic, you have a coach stop the game and have the refs come over. It's only a 15yrd delay penalty fyi

Are you married to a referee or something? You seem to post about people complaining about officiating...A LOT - even in OT Threads for other / non-RU games.

this seems like a better look, though again I think you have to be able to play through bad calls to beat the best at their home. Your idea would potentially make a better statement than suggesting conspiracies on national television.

It all seems like putting attention where it doesn't belong. 1 stone (our inability to convert first downs which of course isnt limited to one play, drive, opponent or season ) and 3 cups; Refs, talent, and coaching. When asked about plans involving the stone, start moving the cups around till the viewer is confused about the problem. Which cup is the stone under?

I don't think excuses need to be made. Rutgers played hard. They still need to work some things out on offense but they showed up and competed and will continue to improve. Michigan was the better team. Refs or no refs

If one call is enough to bury your offense for the following 57 minutes, your offense is the issue. Not the refs.

PE- TKC said it better than you trying to argue with someone that it was a BS call. It was a huge FU call but as TKC stated, the offense needed to get it's head out of it's *** after.

I was at the game. Michigan fans weren't happy with them either. Guys watching on TV might have seen a better replay, but from what I could tell, it looked like they were screwed on the review of the spot when their player dove towards the first down marker along the sideline, as well as a weak pass interference call against them. Of course they didn't show a replay of the fumble in the stadium, we figured that wasn't a coincidence. Overall the standard of reffing is in serious need of improvement. No idea how to accomplish that though.
It looked like that.. but when watchign a replay you have to factor in camera angle distorting the location of the ball. A camera on an angle in front would make the ball look farther away.. behind it will look farther forward.

To me, the clear sign that he did not make it was that he stuck the ball out somewhat.. kept it out as he was moving forward and toward the sideline... but deep into teh sideline the ball landed on the first down marker. That means when he crossed the sideline it was not that far.

But I can see why everyone thought he made it. You have to have some understanding of the perspective given the poor camera angles available.

Yes, that’s the only call to really ***** about. Phony, and huge impact.
the fumble.. and the early whistle while we were moving the pile forward but no whistles while Michigan did it.

The hold.. I think that was inexperience.. the female ref called it. The ball was past that point during a solid fair block. Only after the ball had past that point did the defender suddenly spin and the OL's fingers were kinda stuck in his pads and it looked like a momentary hold... such things are never called.. unless it is a screw job phantom call.. in this case I think female refs do not have the experience yet to discern such things properly.

And consider that fumble we recovered and were returning.. that was in one of those piles moving forward while they did not blow a whistle. They could have claimed they had whistled it dead earlier.. before the fumble. Instead, the line judge who kept pointing down was claiming the runner was down.. and since the runner was not down, he could not have seen that.. he did not whistle it dead.. and he was marking the ball as far forward as possible... AND they did not review it from the booth like they did on a previous play that was on a catch/no-catch (IIRC). AND Michigan rushed to the lien to snap it.. which indicates to me that they knew they fumbled it.

Three bad calls.. and that meaningless flag on a Michigan TD catch that, in 3rd and 7 would have guaranteed them a first down. That was not PI... that was a biased call designed to help Michigan. Then on the pick-siz return.. at teh 40-yard line Wimsatt gets blind-sided.. no call.. our QB.. behind the play.. blind-sided.. no call

Hey Refs! The blue-bloods do not need the help. Keep it fair.

understand, no excuses as we did not score when presented opportunities I'm discussing the $hitty refs and the consistent substandard and severity of the unequitable distribution of calls.

There were multiple calls people are complaining about. Two big ones late in the game.
I agree and saw them all in real time. Nevertheless, what was the score late in the game when this happened? We couldn't move the ball and give our defense a breather.

I agree entirely there were bad calls but we didn't execute and/or had a questionable scheme. The last person in the world you want making excuses for this ongoing problem is the person in charge of fixing it on TV.
