So you were breaking the law? Speeding is the cause and always has been a problem. I’ll give you an example of a good Trooper in NJ. On March 15th on the way to dinner at 5pm in NJ. My 50 year old son , his expectant wife , my wife and I were stopped in our township .Son was doing 32 in a 25 …pulled him over asked for license and registration. My son who is meticulously well organized asked the officer why he was pulled over? Said you were going over the speed limit. My son said , “ sorry I was when I noticed you behind me. I was doing …” the trooper said I’ll be right back . When he returned to us he said ,” I appreciate your honesty.” Where are you from…where are you going ? The trooper was a gentleman , professional and did let him go with the charge of …just slow down …you have a clean record for a long , long time. So I agree not every police or trooper is the same. People know this but let’s all be clear people daily are sailing along township roads, county highways doing speeds not 5-10 over but since pre 2019 …20-30 and more over the posted speed limit. . Sometimes one’s disdain for authority clouds the thought process regarding safety on the road.
Removing a tag from a mattress is also against the law.
On any given day you can drive past a parked cop or trooper doing 60 in a 55 and not have a problem.
The one time I had a problem was in the backroads of upstate NY - which can be pretty hee-haw.
Back in the 90s I lived in a town with its own police so NYS Troopers stayed away.
Then there was a period where some Troopers were going offf-the-hook and encroaching.
One night I saw them racing up a 30 mph street doing well over 50mph and with all their lights off (headlights included).
They had their windows down and were laughing - they were just being rowdy jerks
Soon they were hiding near bars and pulling over pretty girls who had just left.
Eventually the Troopers were a recognized problem and they were moved out of the area - to upstate.
In some small places away from the main highways it pays to be alert and cautious because the tolerances for tourists passing through are pretty tight.
Not that any of that is involved in current crash.
Just that having lived in upstate and downstate NY - and having traveled it extensively - the crash area is one I avoid
