Is it 5 years 'till the HOF?

Yes
Deron Cherry made All Pro 1st team 3x, 2nd team 3x and Pro Bowl 6x
Devin never made 1st team but made 2nd team 3x and Pro Bowl 2x
Devin was a great player but if Cherry isn't in HOF (50 INTs in 10 years) its hard to see McCourty in it (35 INTs in 12 years)

Great player. Great person. NE will miss him, he was the defensive leader and signal caller.

Great article, thanks for finding it. This is a pretty incredible stat

McCourty missed just five games in 13 seasons and took part in fewer than 95 percent of the Patriots defensive snaps only twice during that time – playing 94 percent in 2019 and 92 percent in 2014. On special teams he was equally adept at covering kickoffs as he was returning them. His 104-yard touchdown in 2012 stands out as a memorable moment in his storied career.

Yesterday, they announced on local tv here that he will most surely make the Patriots HOF.

I have to think that he will eventually make it to the NFL HOF.

NFL HOF is a stretch. He was 2x Pro Bowls 0x First Team All Pro 2x Second Team All Pro. He had a great career but people don't understand how great it takes to make the HOF.

Here are the most recent DB/S who made it
Champ Bailey 12x Pro Bowls 3x 1st team All Pro 2x 2nd Team All Pro
Brian Dawkins 9x Pro Bowls 4x 1st team All Pro 1x 2nd Team All Pro
John Lynch 9x Pro Bowls 2x 1st team All Pro 2x 2nd Team All Pro
Troy Polameu 8x Pro Bowls 4x 1st team All Pro 2x 2nd Team All Pro
Ed Reed 9x Pro Bowls 5x 1st team All Pro 3x 2nd Team All Pro

Here are some of the top guys who haven't made it and have better resumes.
Leroy Butler 4x Pro Bowls 4x 1st team All Pro 0x 2nd Team All Pro
Deron Cherry 6x Pro Bowls 3x 1st team All Pro 2x 2nd Team All Pro
Eric Allen 6x Pro Bowls 1x 1st team All Pro 2x 2nd Team All Pro
Don Shell 5x Pro Bowls 3x 1st team All Pro 1x 2nd Team All Pro
Steve Atwater 8x Pro Bowls 2x 1st team All Pro 1x 2nd Team All Pro

Maybe - but he played on what is now NFL royalty. There's a reason Jeter was unanimous and it wasn't just his stats.

So did Donnie Shell with the Steelers. He won 4 super bowls one more McCourty. It takes a lot more than that to reach the NFL hall of fame.

Indeed - HOF fame members are supposed to have been dominant during their peak.
If someone never made All Pro 1st team its hard to argue they were dominant
If playing for NE has "royalty" privileges they didn't extend to post season bouquets.
DM was a great player and a Belichick all-time fav (Belichick's words) but he was never dominant like (say) Brian Dawkins in Philly.

The one thing in his favor would be that he was an All-Pro as a CB and as a Safety.

True. I don't think Devin will get in but my point was he has a much better chance due to Patriots/Belichik connection than say if he played for the Cardinals or Browns. These things "shouldnt" matter but they do.

One difference - all the playoff/Super Bowl achievements.

Why isn't Donnie Shell in then? He has one more super bowl ring, more pro bowls, more all pro seasons. It takes a lot more to get into the hall of fame then just winning super bowls. He had a great career but certainly not a hall of fame career.

I know but Donnie Shell shows that it takes more than just having superbowl rings to get into the HOF.
It depends on the position. I don't think that Joe Namath, Lynn Swann, or Bob Griese would be in the HOF if they didn't have Super Bowl rings. I would argue that it's a big reason why they're in there.
