I think it’s time you take a hiatus from rooting for RU bball. If this was gut wrenching, what did you do between 1990 and 2019
It used to be that complaining about a lack of talent and subpar recruiting at RU happened after abysmally hopeless losing seasons. Now it's happening after winning seasons and close losses in the NCAA Tournament.
Wrong, no, you’re just upset they lost and not making sense. Pike will rebuild and will complete like always.
Stop. Pike is an incredible coach. 3 years in a row with very good teams. Next year is going to be interesting but I fully trust he has built the program for the long haul. Your expectations (and a few others) are completely out of wack. Pike is going to get his teams to the tournament and compete. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Everyone is enamored by how many stars a kid has. I believe I was listening to JJ Reddick on his podcast and he mentioned that after the top 20 kids in the country there's a drop off and it really doesn't matter where you're ranked. I got news for you guys unless you're a bluebird program you aren't getting top kids year in a year out. We will get our fair share of 4 stars I believe pike got 6 since he's been here. It's about coaching up the players you get. Everyone forgets a lot of the time you get your freshman playing time early in the nonconference season. Last year we barely had that. There was a major development hit with covid. Pike is fine he develops his players and gets them to play the style of play he wants. He got out coached he will tell you the same thing. He will learn from this just like the players who are coming back. **** the stars give me dudes who have something to prove.
That’s a fair assessment and yes it would be understandable for a step back next year. I do think if Pike can find someone (Maybe 2) in the portal, RU can complete at a similar level (18 wins). They would definitely need to get someone to put up points similar to Geo or Ron and then have the rest of the team pick up their game. Pike knows how to coach and I fully expect him to figure it out.

Not even remotely similar. There were contractual reasons for giving the Ash extension due to the sanctions. Like or not, that was in his contract/MOU that he and RU signed when he was hired.
Also, are you really comparing Ash's "success" with Pikiell's? Speechless on this point, as it is not even close.
Speechless is a very good way to describe it. Dumbfounded, flabbergasted or befuddled may also work.
@rucoe89 is usually more measured, and maybe he was just salty after the loss. And some fans really hate long extensions, which is understandable.
You're kidding right?! Ash claim to fame was winning a career high 4 games in 1 season.... pike has got us to the tourney 3 years in a row! Buddy do yourself a favor a delete your account.

Why does everyone think there is any tension between these two? Honestly he was an early enrollment and his "freshman" year was lat year where we played maybe what 4 ooc games? This year was his actual freshman year. Pike tried bring the young guys along bit he also has a job to win games. Jones will be fine relax.
You realize 9 of those 11 3s are graduating right? I think the OP is saying that we absolutely need to add multiple scoring threats in the portal for this team to be competitive next year and that's being not be negative at all its the truth. Are there people that really think this team can compete with the current roster next year?
As we have seen this team only went 5 deep in crunch time. We need 3 starters and 3-4 others to step up big. Can Jaden, Miller, Dean, Hyatt, Mag improve significantly? If so we can find 4 role players out of that bunch if they do but I do not see any 30 min starters from that group.
I think to move forward we need 3 portal guys with 3 schollys available at most. I think that’s more change than pikes interested in. I’m less concerned about finding guys in the portal and more concerned with Pike betting on his current bench to develop like Geo or Ron.

I think a few of the guys you mentioned can improve but Hyatt in particular I would shocked if he improved his game on any significant level the kid is just not anywhere close to a Big Ten level player
Hyatt has a lot of potential. Maybe he doesn't put it together, but if he does, it shouldn't be a shock. He is the likely favorite to start at the 4 next year if we don't bring in a starting caliber 4. The opportunity is there for Hyatt to take
The players on the bench weren't even good enough to give us 10 quality minutes a game and these are the same players that you all are claiming will develop (in jus a few months) and become quality starters next yr. Recruiting has been bad, and most on here really don't realize it. Watching Rutgers next year when Rieber, Mag, Hyatt - are all playing 25+ mins a night.. 
It is amazing how people forget.
I was thinking the same thing when I saw that most Cleveland Browns fans are down on Baker Mayfield and want him replaced. I get the idea of trying to get your team to take the "next step", but these Browns fans have already forgotten that Mayfield has led them to 12 wins in their division in the same number of years his predecessors led them to 3.

You guys stop pretending we are still rutgers. We need to fin unconventional ways to win until the 5 stars want to come.
A lot of people on the board wanted Danny Hurley and low and behold hurley gets bounced in first round by a 12 seed.
what you guys fail to get is you can’t find three coaches who consistently get to the sweet sixteen let alone a final four. Final fours are a lifetime achievement for a lot of coaches.
Based on rutgers entire basketball history making the ncaa consistently is the goal right now. One ncaa doesn’t erase that we are still rutgers

You are not suggesting it’s commonplace to play only 5 guys for the last 15 mins of a winner take all game. Plenty of games on this weekend. Take a look.
pike having to lean so hard on those guys is a clear indication of what he believes the talent level of the bench is.

Why was it renegotiated and extended now? Does that happen every year or was it "due"?
Who instigated this contract.. was it Pike? Was he getting offers?
Here's my negative thought (and it is very likely unwarranted speculation) .. if it was Pike's people pushing for this... could it have been based on his looking ahead and seeing the recruiting pipeline looking questionable and knowing his team of super seniors was the best he'll have for awhile so negotiate from strength now rather than risk negotiating off whatever we do in the next two years?

I hope making the tournament as a 10 seed and winning a game and then as an 11 seed in a play-in game is not going to be the peak of Steve's time here. Anyone who isn't a bit concerned about the future is delusional or lying. I mean, even Bob freaking Wenzel made the tournament twice in 3 years.
Now, I think Pikiell is a far less lazy, a better program builder and coach (but in a way better league) so I don't think we'll go in the tank like Bob did for his last six years but there's reason to have plenty of questions about the future.

I would hope Pike would be able to recruit this off-season. Probably was tough to recruit when you have 5 sure fire starters coming back. This year with 3 starters possibly leaving, there’s minutes available. And though hopefully our current bench guys take a step up, I don’t think any recruits can possibly tell at what level they’re at.
Pike is building a foundation. All of our current guys are flawed in some way, but showing that he can develop was the first phase. Now hopefully the even higher rated recruits can see that and understand that and our potential.

If you listen to the podcast the guys on the site did with Hobbs you will hear that it was somewhat preemptive because other schools were looking at him.
I believe the AD's at those schools were not as concerned about Pike's recruiting as the average fan on this site.
I hear you. But I still think having the covid year last year really stunted a lot of our young guys growth. Barely any OOC games for them to develop in. Our bench is ridiculously young.
Laughable. First of all - we still completely stunk at the time Ash was extended. We won a total of 4 games (same number as the guy he replaced won the year he was fired).
And more importantly - Ash took over a program that was only one season removed from an 8-5 finish with a bowl victory over UNC. Forget breaking a 30 year NCAA drought - let’s go apples to apples here. RU hadn’t finished with a 500 record and made a post season in 11 years when Pike came in.
Playing in the B1G makes that type of record extremely hard to achieve. Let's assume 2 losses out of conference. To get to 23-8, you are asking for 14-6 in conference. Challenging for the conference title. Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Michigan State are all regular NCAA teams. Next 3 or 4 years? Maryland will be back. Indiana seems on the right track. Iowa is always tough. No one hands you B1G wins. It's a tough league.
The comparison to Ash was "success" of getting 4 wins. In retrospect that was crazy, but at the time it was because the program seemed to be ready to turn it around. I agree Pikiell is way ahead and has shown success that Ash never did so also agree comparison is not a good one by me (the hazards of a pre-March Madness and Coronas).
That said, I think the extension is very generous. Why not a standard 5 year extension right now rather than go out 8 years (through 2030). The team was inconsistent this year with some spectacular wins and some beyond head scratching loses despite Pikiell's own assessment of being his best team ever. Inconsistency in recruiting is another issue. Recent strong additions of Cliff and Paul are great but he also has a lot of diamonds in the rough that take time to develop and may not develop or stick around long enough after development given the portal environment. This portal offseason will be critical for him.
