No issues with Paul. Was it a great play? No. Heat of the moment and let’s be honest. That dude jacked him in the chest.

******** no flagrant. It happened, Paul likely learned a lesson, we won. No problem.
Come on, let's be honest; It's a flagrant because he took a swing; that's a no-brainer. I love Paul, but with the time left on the clock, you have to know that you are going to be fouled and going to the line, just not a smart play. It's really no excuse for a veteran; if we were discussing this when he was a freshman, that would be totally different. We have to call it like it is. On most teams, Paul would be the sixth man off the bench; but a very good one at that. Just being real.

I know many are upset with him, but we have to support Paul. It's easy to say he did something stupid, but not only was he fouled, but was also pushed hard right after that. No excuse, but he needs our support and not our anger.

He might make some plays or poor body language at times that makes us crazy, BUT HE IS OUR GUY.

Support our team. It's hard enough when the opponents are our enemy........

Best of Luck,
Groz
We’ll said. We have too many fans who hate our own. Don’t get them at all.

We do support him. He does something dumb at a critical time... he gets rightfully criticized.

We still love him. Assuming no suspension, I won't even think about the play again for one second after tonight. We win, move on.

He made a stupid play. Time to move on, but he has to remember to not make stupid plays like that. Hope he bounces back big time on Sunday.

Paul needs to lock in and focus on basketball. He's been distracted with the refs and flopping too much. Pike should tell him no more talking to the refs play ball.
The flopping worked for Davison against us and the following game against Purdue. One on the road and one at home. He actually dove backwards when Jalen Miller was a foot away from him and got that call taking away a bucket at a critical point in the game.

Having said that agree Paul needs to do what RHJ does. He doesn’t complain about any calls and he smirks at guys who are getting chippy. He looked at Johnson a minute before the Paul play and smirked “I’m better than you little man.”

Here's my advice for Paul... and especially to the other players on the court with him.

MOVE THE BALL AROUND.

R offense looks amazing when you are quickly moving the ball around the arc.

Paul: do not drive just to back down a player and shoot.... penetrate and dish more... get something going with popping the ball out for threes... I suspect when you kept it all in the paint that was by design...

OTHER PLAYERS: MOVE without the ball. I saw very few screens off the ball this game. I saw very little effort to move around the arc to open spots to leverage teh D to keep moving with you.

When Paul (or anyone) drives in.. give them safety valves to pass to EARLIER than when they get into trouble in the paint.

If R team passes it around crisply then everything will flow better and I think Paul will get back to what we want him to be. He will have a much easier time scoring as his assists go up. And when he scores then those alley-oops will come more easily also.

BTW.. RHJ's 3pt% in Big Ten play is .425 BEFORE this game.. and his regular FG% is .450... soooo.. why not work more 3 point tries for him? Why bother with 2 point tries at all? Same thing applies to Rieber and Mag... Reiber I can see.. get some fouls on their bigs... maybe. But more 3pt attempts looks to be more points... period.

I think I was thinking about targeting and don't know if there's something similar in college hoops

We need the Paul that doesn’t leave his feet w/o a place to go with the ball.

I actually believe he was swinging to hit the ball. Johnson ripped it from his hands and he was trying to get it back. Either way it doesn’t matter and it was a wild swing that hit Johnson. The refs had to call it. Paul will be back and better than ever. He has a ton of heart.

need the 10 assist Paul on the court Sunday to comfortably win.. he sets up a lot of easy buckets & dunks. do not want to rely on tight shooting. Want to be up 20 midway through the 2nd half..

looking at the hook and hold play.. it was also number 0 with PM... advice: Paul.. you are better at basketball than you are at acting.. stick with basketball.. do not ever try to use acting to get a call again... you do not need it. I know the refs owe you some calls.. but f'em.. trying to generate fouls just takes you out of your game

Agree. He’s a ****ing warrior. That was dumb..no question….but not unprovoked. Bottom line is either he or Pikes should’ve called the time out before that happened.
What do you mean Mulcahy should have called a timeout? He was falling backward with a guy all over him. And the referee never would have granted Pikiell a timeout there if he had tried to call it in the middle of all that split-second action.

Let's also not excuse what Mulcahy did. It could have cost us the game and thus the NCAA Tournament. Yes, he has a lot of heart and guts, but you cannot let your frustration get the best of you in such a critical situation. Hopefully he learns from this and it never happens again no matter how much the other side tries to provoke him.

Paul will learn from this. Pike and staff will drill this into him, but also encourage him to continue his new found aggressiveness on offense. Want to encourage, not discourage.
For the record, yes.. PM was wrong, as anyone is for taking a swing.

The problem with mulcahy is you can't be an instigator if you can't take it as well. He was having fun dishing it out but is cracking now that other teams and officials are getting in his head
why do you call him an instigator?

I think it’s up to the league. Diabete got suspended for 1 game for fighting like a maniac so I think it’s unlikely Paul will get suspended.
2 years ago Kevin Warren felt it was necessary to publicly reprimand Alan Griffin for stepping on a Purdue player and suspend him 2 games. It will be very interesting to see how the commish handles this one but I suspect you are correct and he'll do nothing because he's an incompetent fool.

The slow motion says it all. Johnson mauled him and pauk swiped at him with his arm in self defense. It was NOT a punch or an elbow it was the inside of his forearm. Johnson stumbles away holding his head. Refs make a poor decision.

Paul is typically the guy who would hold his head there which shows you he was in self defense mode in this spot. I hope the league does review this because Johnson deserves to be suspended. Not that it matters they’re not going anywhere.

Just like every member of this program, he's one of us. To do anything other than support the kid is beyond me. We get down on guys when we're disappointed but at the end of the day they represent RU and NJ so we need to get behind them 100%.

Pretty clear but 3 refs look at that and can’t figure out to just give flagrant 1s to both guys. His antics have pissed the refs off enough that they do call the game differently for him - not sure how long it will take for him to erase that.

We are a bubble tournament team with a 4 game win streak against ranked teams. We are on the cusp of a top 25 ranking
Paul is among the league leaders in assist. When he played like he did in the win streak
There isn’t a player in the conference who brings as a package what he brings. By most teams, do you mean the 20-25 teams ranked ahead of us
I am confused 🤔 that would make it less than most

you are making stuff up.. you cannot speak for the refs being pissed at his "antics". Agreed that the hook and hold review would clearly show "antics" by both players.. as well as an arm-grab by Johnson on Geo (who at the ball at the time). So why didn't Johnson's "antics" piss off the refs just as much as Paul's "antics"?

I think the main difference is teams targeting Paul now. And that will continue next year. It is time to stop with the acting and then everything will work itself out. Thicker skin where refs calls are concerned... learn to laugh it off.

Hell.. maybe the next time Paul gets asked a question on camera he should admit he has tried his hand at "gamesmanship" in order to even things up but since it is clearly not working for him he will end that practice. Would make for a refreshingly honest comment that might get some airplay.

Speaking of bad calls...

Agree with all that except he is leading the conference in assists (or maybe 2nd now) and you think on most teams he’d be sixth man off the bench? Was our MVP during our four game winning streak over ranked teams. Without that, likely no NCAA tourney.

Paul gets treated so differently than the other players by this board…

I disagree.......

Prior to the season many were labelling him as too slow to even bring the ball up the court and not good enough of a point guard at the BIG level.

During RU's early season woes many were calling for him to be benched because they felt he sucked.

During RU's ranked win streak he was hailed like a conquering hero .....think he even won the favorite player poll on this board.

During the recent losing streak many started to again question his effectiveness.

After last nights game some RU fans are now calling for his suspension, a mental case who needs counseling, a hot head whiny complaining flopper, a guy who can dish it out but not take it and worse.

This is all in the span of a season. I support the kid, you want guys like him on your team.
