With the help of the feedback here, I think what I've decided is I'm not going to say anything to this couple. Even though I've been in the same two seats forever, I'll see if it's possible to get RU to relocate me slightly within 115. There are a lot of seats near me that are used by the coaching staff as comps. So RU will likely be able to accommodate.

Good post. I'm in 102 and I'm certain I'm louder than 95% of the people at the RAC, but I don't stand 95% of the time, since the noise is far more important than the standing, just like at most top soccer league games. I'm usually one of the first folks to stand up when there's a big play or when the crowd starts to get going, especially on defense in a close game - for example, I was standing the whole last 4 minutes of the OSU game when we were on defense, making our run, but I also think it's kind of rude to be standing all or most of the time and especially any time on offense, as fans shouldn't be loud when we have the ball.
This is the way. It’s a fine line. I think even as recently as a couple years ago the 100s were too quiet/hesitant to stand, but like others have said there’s no reason to stand at random times. Do it when we need momentum on defense, after big plays, or when Pike tells the crowd to get up.

I’m also generally more accepting of standing at the RAC than at other venues/events which is likely due to the atmosphere.

Ummm, you don’t realize the lack of harmony in the above thoughts?
yes I do...what goes around comes around. he doesn't deserve the same respect. and if a guy in front of my dad wouldn't sit so he could see, he'd get the same treatment

So maybe your dad or you are getting the “come around” for previous unrelated times when you’ve been disrespectful to someone else (not this same person)?
Whatevs. I get it, I get it. “I respect people that respect me. But the minute I’m slighted, well you’re going to get it right back at ya.”
Sorry bro but you’re in the same boat as the people you’re railing against for being inconsiderate/disrespectful. You might even be worse because you’re doing it maliciously whereas they aren’t intending to spite you.

I've been in section 115 since the 90s and I love my seats. But I've run into an issue over the last 5+ years. There is a couple who are at every game that is one row in front of me and two seats toward center court. I'm sure they are lovely people and seem like great fans. But anytime there is something even remotely exciting happening on the court, they stand up even though nobody in front of them is up and their view is not obstructed. When they stand up, I either have to stand as well or miss what's happening. I feel badly about this because usually the people behind me are older and don't stand in unison. So now, they're missing the game because I'm up.

Do I say something to these people or not? On one hand, I don't want to dampen their enthusiasm. On the other hand, what is the point of standing if your view remains unobstructed? It seems selfish and disrespectful to the other fans. I clarified that I am directing this to people in the 100 level because I understand the student section and other areas of the building with mostly younger fans would have different ettiquette.

Candid thoughts appreciated.
The people in front of you are not the problem...EVERYONE ELSE who remains sitting is the problem. I used to feel (somewhat) bad about standing but now I lift my arms to get everyone else around me to stand...sometimes it works but not all the time.

BTW, I started standing during the team introductions as well. We should all stand during tip off and until our first basket. Come on people!!!

PS. I'm in section 103, so it's not me in front of you.

Fortunately I’m in section 214. There is only one row in front of me and they stand pretty often. I would never say anything because no one wants to jump up and down more than I do! Unfortunately, I have arthritis in both knee’s and I’m good for about a dozen knee squats per half. Fortunately the score board and replay screen is directly in front of me so I typically just stay seated when I’m hurting and watch the exciting replay on the big screen. Surprised at some of the comments with no empathy for OP and older people with trouble sitting up and down often,
all though, when I was young I’m sure I never gave it a thought. Good post!

I'm more concerned with fans at football and basketball games are in the stadium/arena prior to the start of games.I think the coaching staffs and the athletic director share that viewpoint.

I think this answers the post quite well:

Guys since more than a few of you are not getting what I'm saying, let me try to put it another way.

These people I'm referring to are at times, the only people standing in section 115. Out of 500 people, it's just the two of them. As a result of that, views are being obstructed for people that for whatever reason, would rather remain seated. If you feel it is perfectly reasonable for them to be up when the rest of the entire section is down, then I guess we just disagree. But do not conclude that I am against organically rising to my feet and cheering my head off when the situation dictates it. This is my last word on this so I hope you get it.

For those that understood the post and gave constructive feedback, I appreciate it.

Lou, I do understand your post and somewhat agree to a point. If they are standing during parts of the game that most parts of the arena are not , they need to be politely asked to sit.

But, when you have Pike encouraging the fans to get up and now you have Hobbs asking everyone to stand in the beginning of the game , all bets are off . I personally would not say anything the next few home games, these might be the most important games at the RAC for over 20 years and every piece of energy is needed.

I’ll admit — I don’t like to stand. Honestly, not really sure why. Yet, I’ll stand up at home in my TV room. Yeah, I get it...makes no sense. Haha.

Anyway, when someone stands in front of me I generally just adjust in my seat so I can see around them. And if I can’t I stand up.

I totally get where Lou was coming from with his question and he was probably looking for constructive responses. I think sometimes people read the title in a thread or the first line in a post and decide how they are going to respond without reading through or thinking it through.

It sounds like the fans in front of him lack situational awareness or don't know the game as much. That said, he's trying to find the best way to deal with the situation without crapping on their parade and not ruining the experience for those around him. That's not a a bad thing in my opinion.

For the first time in my life, I had pretty bad back issues in December and January. It was taking two minutes to walk the ten feet from my bed to the bathroom. I named my heating pad. I was using a cane to walk to get my mail.Walking from where I park into The RAC felt like a marathon even when the real bad days ended. Going up the steps in the 200 level might have been going up Mount Rainer. For the first time I came to the realization that I am no longer “approaching” middle age lol. I know at some point down the road I will end up sitting in the disabled section. I will delay it as long as I can, but I would never tell fans in front of me to sit down just because I could no longer stand up too. It will be the same with vision and night games. Eventually, it is no longer safe to drive at night as you age. I certainly am not going to call up Hobbs and ask for all our basketball and football games to start at 11:00 AM so I can make sure I get home in full sunshine.

Yes, thank you. I don’t sit around worrying about getting older , but I can’t imagine not being able to hike. The one that really frightens me, though, would be losing my sight completely. That scares me to death. I could deal with losing my hearing, but not my vision.

Realistically students should be in the 100’s like they are at every other school. You are fortunate to be able to even be allowed there. You should be standing the entire game imo
Coming from a guy that doesn't go to games and when you did come to the one game 2 years ago, you acted like a real moron and got the whole section upset with you with your antics.

I guess all the donations from people in the 100's should not count for anything.....

Stay away, we wouldn't want you to subject yourself to a coach that has a low ceiling.

Best of Luck,
Groz

We're on the same page. And I agree, when things get hot, get up out of your seat and go nuts. But if you are literally the only two people standing in a section of mostly older adults and families, I think it's selfish.
First of all sorry for some of the usual snarky replies. Guy comes here asking a reasonable question and the boards help and some are just jerks.
I totally get what and why you are asking and know you aren't advocating for folks to just remain in their seats. I thought it was just me. Every freaking event I go to out of tens of thousands I always get the two people who want to stand the whole time in front of me.

I've literally asked the people to switch seats. This way they can stand and we can all be happy.

I'd lean to just approaching them nicely with your concerns and see where that goes (which I'm sure you'd do) . And honestly maybe they would be willing to change seats next year.

Guy makes an honest post asking a simple question and is getting ripped. 25-30 years in the 100's, my man has likely donated a boat load of $, gone to the Rac when 4k attendance was the norm, etc.

I love the Rac but the Johnny come Lately's need to relax and realize it's guys like Lou who have been supporting this program since the jump - all he's doing is asking a question. If it's me, I leave it alone b/c it's usually not worth the potential argument.

True story. Just 10 minutes ago was talking with my 9 yr old about a spat between her, her friend and a couple neighbors their age. Your reasoning is the same reasoning all these 8-10 yr old kids were using and why a small issue continued to escalate until finally parents were involved.

Funny how so many of you ******** think you cheer louder standing than when sitting.
Can you explain how that works?
