Question for those with 100 level seats.

I've been in section 115 since the 90s and I love my seats. But I've run into an issue over the last 5+ years. There is a couple who are at every game that is one row in front of me and two seats toward center court. I'm sure they are lovely people and seem like great fans. But anytime there is something even remotely exciting happening on the court, they stand up even though nobody in front of them is up and their view is not obstructed. When they stand up, I either have to stand as well or miss what's happening. I feel badly about this because usually the people behind me are older and don't stand in unison. So now, they're missing the game because I'm up.

Do I say something to these people or not? On one hand, I don't want to dampen their enthusiasm. On the other hand, what is the point of standing if your view remains unobstructed? It seems selfish and disrespectful to the other fans. I clarified that I am directing this to people in the 100 level because I understand the student section and other areas of the building with mostly younger fans would have different ettiquette.

Candid thoughts appreciated.

Lou, I seat in 103 across from you and for years if you stood you were hollered at. Not anymore , there is an electric feeling at the RAC that was palpable in the Michigan State and Ohio State games and standing and cheering on the defense has become part of the RAC ‘s magic in getting the other team to have a shot clock violation. It helps the team. Getting up with them during these all the loud moments is a good thing and it wouldn’t hurt the older couple to get up as well since they probably could use the exercise that will prolong their life. Just my opinion . I get up

At Texas A&M, football fans stand the entire game. It is a ballgame, not a play or ballet. Unless someone has a physical disability, shouldn’t be an issue with standing up and cheering whenever you want . The disabled section offers a great view, in my opinion. We had so many terrible decades that we don’t know how to really go crazy and have fun at games.

I always look at it almost like a Springsteen concert. There are "appropriate" times to stand and other times to sit. Those people that are always standing are very rude and not necessarily "better" fans because they stand all the time and I will tell them to sit down.

If we are on a run or need some real encouragement, I can see standing, but otherwise, sit down. You can still make lots of noise while sitting down.

I know the younger people on the board will make some snide comments, but this is my belief.

Best of Luck,

Appreciate the post Lou.
Look I get it, not everybody wants to stand. When I go I’d love to stand all game but I don’t because I have some consideration for those behind me. To me I occasionally stand but I’m definitely one of the first ones standing and occasionally stand alone in 100s opposite the scorer’s table. So, while I have respect and consideration for others…. It’s also a ballgame… and I paid lots of money to be close…. And I am only able to make a handful of games. Why in the world am I sitting when something exciting is happening?!?! I don’t hardly sit at home watching these games!
In my opinion, if someone doesn’t want someone standing blocking their view either stand more, buy 1st row tickets, move to a place where people mostly sit (higher sections), or watch from home. It’s meant to be entertaining and exciting! Jump out of your seats fun! I’m over 45.

We're on the same page. And I agree, when things get hot, get up out of your seat and go nuts. But if you are literally the only two people standing in a section of mostly older adults and families, I think it's selfish.

I am also in 115, but I know this isn't me you are complaining about.

That being said I'm very hesitant to stand up, unless it's like a big alley oop or something. But I usually do my best to look behind me to make sure others are standing.

Unless it's a situation like late game defense I'm standing regardless because everyone should be

this is a tough question because they don't stand all the time....

when I was working I had to stand for 8 or 9 hours a day, at times....so upon retirement I prefer to sit as much as possible....

football games, stand on important 3rd downs, the end of the bb game, I guess standing....of course we will have hard core football fans that will want to stand throughout...

Fair question. Standing up and getting loud is part of the experience. Pike is often waving for people to get up and loud. Lots of elderly fans may have problems with that. Unfortunately it’s just part of the event and I bet they would rather be standing up too.

Basketball game etiquette. I fully appreciate the issue. I sit in the 200's. When people come in during the game, they stop on the first landing to catch some of the action and block the view. I am the first one to yell at them to move on and will even tell the "security" person there to make sure he moves people along. Some of the looks I get are incredible. Which brings me to my suggestion. Speak to the security person closest to the issue. Ask them to speak to the fans asking them to be respectful of those around them when standing or not.

if this does not work, you are really only left with three choice's., you say something and it ends bad, move your seats or accept the situation and live with it.

Please give up your tickets and stay home as you can sit in a chair and watch from your TV the entire game. Stand when you feel like it as you won't disrupt anyone.

I will certainly buy your season tickets directly from the school for those seats. These are events and the team thrives off the energy of the fans, clearly!

I am in the 100s and if someone stands up in front of me, I stand up. Not a big deal, IMO.

Fan support for the team is good and helps them win. More fan support is better than less fan support.

Anytime there is a conflict between people pushing for more fan support and people pushing for less, the people pushing for more win.

Realistically students should be in the 100’s like they are at every other school. You are fortunate to be able to even be allowed there. You should be standing the entire game imo
If they take me out of my seats I'll riot lol.

I'm afraid that if we ever get a new arena I'm going to be SOL because of what you mentioned above

A few years back I attended a soccer game at Real Madrid. 100,000 plus fans, unbelievable atmosphere. The stadium is kind of like the RAC in that it is very vertical and there's no track so the fans feel like they're right on top of the field. They have sections in the end zones where fans basically stand the entire game, but my seats were in a high priced section near mid-field. The first time there was an exciting play when Real was attacking the other team's goal - I jumped to my feet. Let's just say I never did that again! There was an instantaneous reaction from what seemed like every person in the section directed at me, it was actually a little scary. The guy sitting next to me realized I was American. He patiently explained to me that they could make just as much noise sitting as standing, that they paid a lot of money for their seats, and that everybody could see better when they were sitting down.

Anyway, I'm in the 100's myself. No problem standing. We've been doing it a lot, which is great. It kind of happens organically, everybody senses when it's time to stand.

Having said that, I don't think the OP's question is unreasonable or shows a desire to have less fan support or that he's not a real fan. If it's time to stand, everybody stands. It just happens. Standing and blocking people's view at random times when there's a lull in the action doesn't strike me as some litmus test of super fandom.

If you're too old to stand when something exciting happens, it's probably time to start watching from home... Unless you are OK with a somewhat obstructed view.

Stand up. Get loud. Help contribute to the majesty of the RAC. Don't detract from it by trying to make people sit. That makes you a bad fan. Sorry.

My feelings for years was we need more older fans to do exactly that. If they’re fired up then the younger fans should be too. In many places fans basically are standing for much longer than our ticket holders. I give ‘em credit. Get up out of your seat and make some serious noise on Wednesday.

Good post. I'm in 102 and I'm certain I'm louder than 95% of the people at the RAC, but I don't stand 95% of the time, since the noise is far more important than the standing, just like at most top soccer league games. I'm usually one of the first folks to stand up when there's a big play or when the crowd starts to get going, especially on defense in a close game - for example, I was standing the whole last 4 minutes of the OSU game when we were on defense, making our run, but I also think it's kind of rude to be standing all or most of the time and especially any time on offense, as fans shouldn't be loud when we have the ball.

My seats are in the 100’s. The views of the game are fantastic. I think you give these folks a pass, and do whatever you have to do to see the action as best you can. I’d be grouchy about it only if they were rooting for the opponents.

Some bad reading comprehension here.

The people are inconsiderate and there is no point in speaking with them.
Perhaps by speaking with them you might find out they don’t realize it. The problem is complaining on the board isn’t helping you , other fans around or even the culprits. Now if they don’t respond in a positive way then you go in a much different direction.

There’s a difference between standing after a big play/big moment in the game and just standing all the time.

Nothing wrong with getting up after a big dunk or made shot, or when most of the RAC is up cheering.

Nobody except the students stand all game so if you’re doing that in the 100s you’re probably being a doosh.

Maybe one or both have medical conditions which requires them to stand at times not conduscive to others with no leg , hip or back issues. I had many in my 302 section years back who were older fans, alums. Some did have a problem . You realize the seats are not the most comfortable .

Well put richthedentist . This has always been an issue at Rutgers going way back … stand , don’t stand … they possibly don’t mean any harm. Be happy fans who are in those lower level seats. I’d say actually pretty privileged and that’s ok. Be happy now because on Wednesday if all goes to plan every butt should be on their feet , yelling, screaming , cheering these guys to a VICTORY over Illinois.

Section doesn’t matter. Except for occasional big moments late in a game (critical defense moments, standing O), it’s rude to obstruct someone else’s view.

Similar question to a football thread about leaving for concessions or bathroom where i posted I was seriously pissed that a guy in my row wouldn’t get up for my 80 year old father who needed to go to the bathroom mid-quarter to pass by.

So to embarrass the guy in front of his wife i often make a point to make him stand up to get out of my way so I can do the same thing, and I face him as i cross in front of him to really make him feel small in front of his wife.

Point is, respect others. Same goes for covid rules. Back to this thread. Seats are for sitting on. Use them. Don’t **** on other because they don’t want to (or can’t) stand as often
