Looks like Pikiell (91–85) has raised some RU MBB fans expectations high enough that he isn't meeting their standards.( 39–65 B1G)
Nothing wrong with expecting greatness from a program that hasn't been considered a good one since Tom Young left after the 1884-85 season

Before Pike was hired, there were many on this board that looked on the Gary Waters days ( 79–75 > 28–52 Big East) with fondness

At tail end of Gary's time at Rutgers there were RU fans that fet the program wasn't progressing god enough under him and wanted him replaced.
Seems like that's happening now with Pike.

Gary needed to go . He was lousy. What didn’t need to happen was hire Fred hill .
Pike has accomplished a lot more than Gary . He’s going to get until at least 2023-2024 and it will have be really bad for hobbs to pull plug.

agree, that's why I feel Pike has a 2 year grace period in order to see if he can make RU into a contender from the terrible program he took over
Let him have till the end of the 2024-25 season to look at the program and if he's making it a real good one or not.
No matter what he's doing right , he still has the perception that RU isn't a top program that top recruits will thrive in..

If he doesn't upgrade the program enough with the players he can recruit, he'll just be thought of like Waters as a good coach that can't recruit the HS talent needed to be a contender for the top spot in B1G East and a constant tourney team..

I agree . Unless we are last place next two years and no talent at all looking towards 2024-2025 then he should be fired. But I don’t think we will see that scenario

For those of who us who are happy to see the overall trajectory of RU hoops since Pike has been here, I think we all appreciate being competitive night in and night out. Including myself as I've said over and over again.

BUT, what major university, or big ten university for that matter do you think will just say "Oh yeah, we went to the Tourny 3/4 four years ago so Pike should stay"?

It doesn't work like that. When fans stop showing up, and the money slows up as well, there will be a decision to be made. No matter what Pike has done for the university and us fans!

Again, I HOPE it doesn't get to that because I like PIKE! So lets hope we get some recruiting juice over the next couple of years to get the trajectory pointing up again!

I'll leave this thread alone and hope for the best.

Since taking over at Oklahoma State (note they were #22 the year before his first year)

2018 #59
2019 #83
2020 #53
2021 #33
2022 #47

seems like the people who keep chiding us for being satisfied with “mediocrity” when it comes to Pike would be calling for this guy’s head as well.

Haha heres how i liken it. What does the future look like. We all are on board with football because despite 3-6 and 5-7 we see the build, we see progress, we see an upward trajectory, we see the recruits being brought in. Do you see that with basketball? I dont.

if boynton would come here wed be foooooools not to take him. Pike cant shine boyntons shoes

Well, I don't know. I understand where people are coming from and why they are somewhat worried, but despite coming into a team that was #279 (and still #135 in 2017 under Pike, while Oklahoma State was #22) with an absolutely woeful history he had better teams than this guy in 2019 and 2020 and a slightly worse but substantially equal (#38 vs #33) team in 2021 all while supposedly being a far worse recruiter. He clearly did something right even if it's difficult for me to quantify exactly what it was.

I dont.

I think kyk's take on Pike has always been he's a good guy and good program builder, but he can't take us to the next level. So those stats with the improvement from taking over Rutgers in the gutter still fits with that assessment

Agree but it doesn't explain why he wants to take the next chance on this guy who hasn't done any better.

Let me start off by saying I’m a pike guy! So this discussion is not about how he’s doing currently.

IF: If this is Pikes limit due to lack of offense or ability to take recruiting to the next level, eventually, the time will come where we will all want to move on (some of you already are. Lol).

What level coach considers us now? Basically a bubble team for the next few years (great for some of us, for now), obviously all that Rutgers has to offer in terms of recruiting...who takes us past that?

I’ve seen the mentions of Rick Pitino and coaches of his stature. I think Rick would come here as someone said in another thread. Not so much cause Rutgers is so attractive to coaches, but because of many other factors, competition, chance to play against your son, expectations, etc.

I personally wouldn’t hire him to RU because of the history of RU’s hires and the media. Lol.

Never a Hurley.

How about Kevin Bannon?

I think Mike Rice has been working on staying calmer.

Football might be much better than they were under Ash but we get hammered by Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State , Michigan, Iowa and Michigan State every single year. We never even passed the 50 yard line against Penn State. We can't even get to .500 in the Big Ten. Basketball at least is competitive in the BIG. It isn't even close. Steve is a very good coach and loves his players and this university. I hope he never leaves RU.

“Every single year”? The current coach has been here for two years.

This is where fans or phony fans forget all of the past lies and posts that fit what they want to say.

First there was a separate post on another Pike thread that talked about Pike or RU not winning road games....fine, completely understandable.....and then completely tried to state RUs road wins "don't count" because there weren't fans......so why should RU fans give credit to 3-6 in 2020, when there were "no fans"??? Double standard, let's disregard Pike winning road games and praise Schiano for the same road game wins, with no fans???

But RU football went 3-6 & 5-7 in the 1st 2 seasons and recruiting is on the uptick...well, you are comparing RU football with a new competitive staff for the 1st time, which is exactly what Pike did with Harper, Mathis, Baker, Myles Johnson, Caleb and followed it up with Mulcahy and Cliff, Jaden Jones and Hyatt, Yeboah and Jacob Young via the portal....yes there are some kids that are not starters, but other programs also miss on recruiting as well.

The harsh reality is 35 to 40% of all recruits that are usually "4 stars, don't pan out in both sports.....so sure, some of the Pike recruits are not going to hit, just like any other program, and I'm fairly certain the same thing is going to happen with the Schiano recruiting as well.....we have already seen one "4*", who either is severely overrated or not the right fit, in Alijah Clark, bolt via the portal to Syracuse....it happens in all sports and all programs.

The majority of the RU football fans, look at the 5-7 (or 5-8), with a more than fair viewpoint. RU won 2 more B1G road games fueled by getting to play Illinois after they played Penn State and a million OTs, and beat Indiana with I think, 6 turnovers by Indiana.....the game was started with the 1st play fumble and RU took off and won in a romp. The overall improvement coming from Ash level is the same thing Pike has done, coming from Eddie Jordan levels...

If RU fans would not try and pigeon hole things or twist facts, then a legitimate discussion is up to be started.

The ultimate question is for RU basketball.....how many years in a row, should RU make the NCAAs OR be considered a "good program"??

If RU misses the tourney 1 year and bounces back the next year, it doesn't sound like some RU fans aren't willing to allow RU, as a program, any down or "off years".

So the question is, should RU be in the NCAAs, every single year, no exceptions, no excuses....??

Is it every 2 out of 3 years to make the NCAAs.....???

Is it 3 out of every 4 years???

Is it every 2 out of 4 years???

We need to ask the fans who want Pike gone today, what do they think the "standard", is??

Which B1G program outside of Wisconsin, MIchigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue and before this season with Maryland....which program should we be on par with that dances almost every single season???....the programs that dance every single year???

If the standard is "no slips and every single year and then winning games in the NCAAs every single year as well....., you're asking for RU to be a blue-blood program.....

Agree we see the build in football . With pike we’ve already seen him built it and get us to the tournament . Yes , it looks like it’s slipping.

I'm in the camp that Pikell will get a few more seasons--he's earned that--but I hope Pikell will glean learnings and insights from this year, including recruiting, and adapt where needed. I'm all for a strong defense, but we also need shot-makers--losing Young, Mathis, even Johnson reduced the # of players who could make shots (not so much Johnson)...we are too reliant on RHJ and Geo.

Last year, Mathis goes off and scores 25 and shorthanded (no RHJ) we beat Purdue at home.

We are also lacking a guard like Young, who could play pressure D--we are vulnerable to smaller, penetrating guards.

This post literally had nothing to do with Coach being fired..lol. I literally said what this post was about.
When Pike got hired, people debated HOW ATTRACTIVE the job was.

So I wondered how ATTRACTIVE THE JOB IS NOW. I have ZERO problem with anyone who doesnt want to discuss this. It's a free world.

But please, either stay on topic, or scroll by. Simple.
I will stay on topic....it is stupid for starting a next coach thread. No matter how you try to justify this topic with double talk about how attraction the job is right now.... Ridiculous.

Iowa should be included with the teams cited above because of their offensive prowes.
