I’ll take the points. They get the rebound, call timeout. Then if they draw a foul, we’re done for. Let them try a Hail Mary play again. If they make it full court with only 2 seconds and heart break us a second time, hats off to them.
They showed the Curse of Weisenkamp and it was almost the same time remaining: alll set up for Iowa 2.0.

Instead it was Rutgers 1.0 with the "W"!

If he misses the rim, they get the ball out of bounds with no time off the clock, if he hits the rim, the clock starts when any player touches the ball. The big risk is we foul on the rebound. Missing on purpose makes sense if you are up 3 or if you have a free foul to give.

You wouldn’t miss on purpose if you’re up 3 . You would make the shot so you go up 4

I get the argument for both sides and admittedly, I didn't realize the nuance that you wouldn't be able to run the baseline off of a timeout. But I'm in the camp that since Purdue Iowa had a time out, it's better to make the shots. If Purdue Iowa had no time outs, then yes make sure you hit the rim and don't foul.

Why does everyone assume its so easy to intentionally miss (making sure you hit the rim on the miss)?

There is no way we were going to lose to purdue no matter what last night! I will agree with you !

I think the chance of fouling with a 1 and 1 situation is to great a risk, especially with refereeing what it is..
Make both, what are the Vegas odds with 2 seconds left 99%
I’ll take it

Pittsburgh got burned by that very scenario in the ncaa tournament and lost a game to butler because of it.
That’s why you pull everyone off the line . Let them get a rebound uncontested.

Even with a timeout, time will run off the clock. The clock starts immediately when the ball touches the rim. At a minimum, a second would run off before someone got possession.

It's not a clear cut call but I think I would have had him miss. Couple things to consider. One, you don't want to tell him that to put the thought of missing in his mind. Let him know after he makes the first. Secondly, when someone tries to miss they do wind up missing the rim entirely. Then you are in a worse situation as you can now lose by a 2 pointer with no time coming off the clock.

I think I would have just rolled with letting him try to make the 2nd.

Great thread, great sports conversation.
All excellent points being made.
We can all be ecstatic with the result and still have fun talking about strategies

I think the decision is definitely debatable, but have no problem making the shot. However, I am reasonably sure that the clock doesn't start when the ball touches the rim on a foul shot, it starts when a player first touches the ball.

A couple incorrect takes in this thread that should be clarified.

1. The clock starts when someone touches the ball after a FT miss not when it hits the rim.

After the soft foul on Ron, I would be scared of a soft makeup call on a miss.

Could put no one lined up for the rebound and let them get it and call TO to run some clock

2. After a made basket/FT, if a TO is called, they can still run the baseline

We survived . But that was a huge mistake and that’s on pike . Iowa is gonna have to heave it 90 feet or call timeout and can’t run the baseline if we miss . That was absurd he made it.
Or we foul accidently on the rebound battle. You take the points.

Entirely debatable, that I agree (I am fine with him making it a 2 point game) but this is hyperbole. Have to relax after a big W.

OP, if there were no timeout I’d agree 100%. Make or miss Iowa uses their TO and inbounds the ball with 2 seconds. Also, If you miss, a two beats you. So the Laettner type shot wins rather than sends to OT.

Also, after the foul call by that ref I wouldn’t trust him. I’d want to be up 2 in case he sends them to the line.

One thing I think we can all agree on is they got WAY too good of a look there!

My thoughts exactly. If they’re going to put us on the line with that soft of a foul, then I do not want to risk giving them a chance to win the game if the refs make a similar call down the other end.

This is the most important point. Its not as easy as it seems to miss a free throw on purpose. An air ball and no time off the clock and you are up less than 2 points.

Yeah, but this makes the Hail Mary way harder . If they even get to that point
Listen out loud to what you just typed, “Hail Mary”. You are worried about a Hail Mary and not worried about a foul up only 1. You are a fool if you think a Hail Mary happens all the time. Weiscamp hit a 1-1000 shot and that was after the ball was deflected 2x to get to him in the corner. Making the foul shot was the right move every time.

We wouldn’t have fouled because everyone would have been back at halfcourt. They got a great look . A look they wouldn’t have gotten if mccaffery can’t run the baseline and Cliff is defending. Wow, what a fool!

yes, unless our guys are told to be stationary on the second shot we risk fouling while trying for the rebound and losing at the FT line. And we lose the opp to call TO and set up the D.

You may be right on first touch. Still need gain control so some time has to come off clock.

Collins had them miss last night in pretty much in the exact situation. We didn’t have a timeout , but still very similar !
Wow, I am good !!!
