Jaden Jones - Redshirt?

Is there a possibility that Pike has decided to redshirt him? By no means am I trying to criticize Oskar, but the fact that he is getting minutes over Jaden is beyond confusing. Yes, Jaden has struggled at times, but it’s night and day in terms of potential.

Bench rotation should be Mag, Hyatt, Jones, Reiber, and Miller in certain spots. Agee and Oskar should be 11 and 12 in desperate situations only (injury, foul trouble). Am I crazy or does everyone else agree?

Too late to redshirt. He will be our main scoring option and shot taker next year after Ron and Geo are gone. He has to stay positive and continue to work in practice. Tons of evidence of Big 10 highly touted freshman that had to wait their turn until the upperclassman graduated before it was their time. Pike is going all in on Paul and Caleb even when they struggle early. Pike went to Hyatt who hit 2 threes immediately when Paul shot the bed. He also could have used Jones. Hope it is around the corner but he will get all the playing time he wants next year.

Nothing further from the truth here.....Jones has to earn his minutes whether here or elsewhere.

No one player is irreplaceable, Jones has to outwork Mag, Hyatt and others ahead of him to play better defense......If he were to leave, he is not irreplaceable IMO.....defense travels and wins games in this conference or almost every Power 5 conference team that cares about winning......

Miller is an offseason of work on his jump shot from being a quality guard.....Jones is an offseason away from the weight room, film room, from being a contributing factor. Both have ingredients that can help down the road, within the team concepts.

Jones just turned 19 today (I think)......asking a lot of a true frosh is not ideal.....

I didn’t say it would be the right decision on his part or justified but I see it very likely - hope I’m wrong.

Basketball is different from football. Once you step on the court for one second, your redshirt is burnt. Unless you are injured and your school files for a medical redshirt on your behalf - but it's way too late in the season for even that.

Stop with this excuse that he's a Freshman. It's garbage. He's a 4 star that graduated early and got playing time last year. He's had an offseason.

Miller is playing over him and didn't have an offseason. Aiden Terry has the same amount of minutes as Jones over the last 3-4 games.

There's something else going on here and if there isn't there is no chance he is here next season. None.

Outside of his ranking coming in,
What has he shown this season that is not replaceable? He has potential, but until it is realized on the court it's not the end all be all. Outplay the other teammates and earn your PT, If you don't, you don't. I think him not getting immediate playing time shows the depth Pike has built up. 6 years ago he would have been starting.

I agree with your assessment. But Jaden's talent on the offensive side is outstanding, even though at times when he's in he rushes his shots trying to play hero ball. But still, we need him next year as we will be losing a lot of quality players. I just hope Pike and staff is keeping him positive.

Personally don’t think Miller has given any reason for us to believe he should be playing. He’s been bad defensively and nonexistent offensively. I think it’s clear his try hard attitude is a Pikiell pleasing persona that tends to get preferred treatment.

We shouldn’t be penciling him in for anything meaningful next year imo just like penciling in Jaden Jones for 10 and 4 this year because of using a ship on him in an early enrollee season was silly.

Let’s just hope he can contribute as an upperclassmen when the time comes.

I have to believe the preferred outcome next year is picking up a contributor guard in the portal to play over him. Even so I think he may have to start and we won’t be better for it.

Which games has Jones showed us he deserves to be playing over any of the others above him on the depth chart? If his a great offensive talent I have yet to see it and he is definitely a defensive liability. I think he will get better and be an asset to us in the future, but right now he’s not there.

My only concern with Jones is that I feel like we haven't heard much about him flashing his potential in practice.

When geo first got here we heard about how well he was practicing.

When Cliff first got here we heard about his flashes.

Heck even Myles we heard about When he was redshirting.

Jaden not so much, I totally give him time since he's really just a freshman but I am little worried that havent heard much about him in practice. Maybe I missed it

I sort of agree with what you said - except the preferential treatment part being about attitude. Miller so far has demonstrated in game that he’s MUCH less of a liability defending the perimeter than Jones has. It’s not even close. So while his “stellar” defense is probably exaggerated by some posters on here, he’s still one of our best defensive options available to give Geo or Caleb a breather. That’s the role Miller has been playing - to come in and make sure the opponent doesn’t go on a 3 point marathon like what happened to us at the end of Lafayette and UMass (in fairness - we didn’t have Geo available down the stretch in either of those games when we blew it). This team isn’t fast enough to score much in transition, and we’re not the kind of team that’s going to win shoot outs. This team more than any other needs to stick with the defense first Pike mantra to succeed. Jones is a guard and there happens to be a bunch of other guys on the roster who defend the perimeter much better than him right now. That’s why he’s not playing.

Some posters question Oscar, Dean, etc. playing over Jones. I’m not saying I agree with Oscar’s PT but the reason is that it’s a different position. Pike doesn’t see value on bringing Jones in to spell the 4-5 slots because he’ll never play there. He goes with the subs whose natural positions match there. That’s probably all there is to it.

Not sure how you could say Miller is not a good defensive player. He didn’t have a great game yesterday, but announcers are fawning all over his defensive prowess

Palmquist gets time because he has bought into the system and plays hard. There is no doubt that Jaden is very talented - but his intensity on D is lacking.

When he entered in "Garbage time" against NU it was telling that he was going one on one anytime he got the ball.

Doesnt merit minutes over Mag and Hyatt, but over palm.

In addition to defense, the main issue is he looks to shoot almost always. Has not shown any offensive flow understanding or shown how to be part of the team flow. He catchs and goes into shoot first mode. Really only time he doesnt shoot is when he cant get it off-as opposed to other reasons such as working the ball to the open player. Hyatt has some of this too, but has shown a little more of the flow, and much more of D.

With the focus on movingt the ball and assists, Jones' skill set really has not merited minutes. Yes it's a concern about him leaving, and I'm sure Pike has thought of that but Mag and Hyatt definitely need to se the court first.

Where is he going? Significant downgrade compared to where he is now? Why not learn defense at one of the better defensive programs out there, RU. He can be a significant contributor in the future right here

Not true.Jones wae supposed to be one of the best shooters preseason and during the scrimmages.Why he is getting little or no minutes on a team that needs scoring from the bench is a mystery.

Richie actually said the rule has changed and you can play 6-8 games or something along those lines. Either way Jones has played too much

I think what he was saying came out wrong. Miller holds his own well on the defensive end which is noteworthy for a true frosh. Definite potential there. But it’s also an exaggeration to say that right now he’s an amazing defensive stopper. He fouls a lot and it’s not like those gambles have paid off with a ton of steals or anything. The point is this team was lacking a kid who could be relied on to come in and do a decent job guarding the perimeter and not having the opponent go off on a huge run when Geo or Caleb aren’t in. We’re a better team for having him available this year rather than redshirt for this reason. But that doesn’t mean the kid is in the running for defensive player of the year the way he’s been hyped up either. That’s all.

The question is what Jones mindset is about going from being part of the rotation to DNPs... especially in a game like PSU where we were in desperate need of some offense

If he realizes he has a lot to work on and is OK with working in practice and developing his game and focusing on a bigger role next season with Geo and Ron gone... thats the ideal scenario. We hope it's this.

If he thinks he is better than some of the other guys and deserves to play now and is unhappy about it... in today's portal world its hard to think there isn't a slight possibility at least he looks to leave

Two different mind-sets Jones could be having
