It’s a nice debate, on whether to play Gavin or preserve his redshirt.

Hey, it’s Thanksgiving weekend. Time to use the good china.

A few points:
1. Playing him in Indiana game when you are up 38-3 made no sense
2. By 2023 when next years linemen are Sophomores, we will have a good offensive line with some depth which should give Gavin some real sense that 2023 can be a successful year for the offense.
3. If we are doing well against Maryland, do not put him in. I’m sure he would rather play in a bowl game. If we are losing big to Maryland, the issue is moot.
4. All of his appearances this year and if he is inserted into Maryland game had nothing to do with determining game results. They were merely made to get his feet wet.
5. Don’t get Gavin’s ankle twisted by Finau, who in my opinion should be suspended from this game by Locksley.
Why though? I think getting him some garbage time snaps was the likely course of action this year to begin with. That was how I figured he'd get his feet wet, that was how I figured he got experience.

Him being in for a significant # of plays while the game is in doubt was always highly unlikely and that has played out. Him being in for a play here and there while the game is still on the line, I find that a little surprising actually. Not surprising is that he hasn't contributed a whole lot.

It's that last point as to why I would not play him vs MD if the game is close. He's really not bringing much to the table right now.

Not being critical but I'm interested in the thought process that brings you to this conclusion.
I think his point was, if he's as good as we think, he goes pro early. And if he's not that good, he gets passed on the depth chart, and then transfers.

I'd think it's pretty rare to have a 4 year starter in college these days.

In my opinion, You let him go full throttle against MD and if he’s spitting the bit bring a backup in, he came here to play not think about other teams that may give him more playing time or if he made the correct decision,

You don't even have to look that far, Kenny Pickett was a 4 year starter and this year is one of the best in the country.

People are saying he's either drafted early or bust. There's way more possibilities that are way more likely. He could be an above average QB but not a pro prospect. He could be a below average QB next year and then get better every year until he's a Heisman candidate. He could be an average QB and then have a great senior season etc.

I just don't understand why we'd want to eliminate a year when usually the older a QB gets the better he is.

If Schiano wanted to red shirt him all along, he should have saved the last game and the bowl game as part of the four games. Use him Saturday and during the bowl game. No way Wimsatt stays at Rutgers for 5-years, I'll take that bet today. Better chance he's playing at Western Kentucky in 2-3 years.
He had that chance. NO?

Probably should’ve been put in up 31-3 but otherwise agree with your post!

You use him, and every other trick you can, this week in order to win. Going to a bowl is fine but the extra practice for our young time is incredibly valuable. Then you do not play him in the bowl game.
Yeah, this.

End of thread.

So when all was said and done, Wimsatt played in 3 games and he still has 4 years of eligibility. Next year's QB room should look like this:
1. Wimsatt
2. Vedral
3. Simon

I'm thinking Snyder is headed for the transfer portal. We'll see.

I don't know what our scholarship availability is. If Fran Brown leaves, I think some recruits will leave with him prior to signing day, which would open a few. We'll find out about that in the next couple weeks.

But if we have some available scholarships, I think GS needs to try to hit up the portal to bring in players in a few key groups: QB, WR, DL being the priorities, at least at the moment, IMO.

Head scratcher. He should have played more. Verdral was brutal and cost us wins.
