Wonder what the first RU tourney in 30 years brought the program?
AYN, you may be right about a couple big donors. I realize not every grad or general fan from ACU stays in Abilene, but from what I understand that is not a well off city.
More than fishy. If true - which I absolutely doubt - it would be unprecedented by orders of magnitude. There's a lot more to be said about this, but it hardly even deserved the effort. That sounds very fishy.
In 2019, the Abilene Christian Wildcats men’s basketball team made the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The former Division II school drew the Kentucky Wildcats, one of the sport’s true blue blood programs, and lost by 35 points. They may have gotten crushed in that contest, but they crushed it in the other game.
ACU estimated the exposure was worth $74 million.
So what exactly is a win against Texas in the NCAA Tournament, and then a round-of-32 game against UCLA, worth to America’s favorite West Texas, small private school?
“So far we are close to $120 million plus and we really haven’t had time to tally up the totals,” ACU President Dr. Phil Schubert said in a phone interview from Indianapolis before his school played UCLA on Monday afternoon.
"ACU estimated the exposure was worth $74 mil.." Wish our Presidents counted what athletic exposure brings to the school like ACU's does. Instead athletics gets charged for dining services. It's not $120 million in donations -- notice the wording in the full quote and in the original story. He's talking about getting $120 million worth of exposure (school's name being in the news, application increase spikes, marketing in the tournament, etc).
