Geo baker is doesn’t have the guys for real change. Would rather just tweet about it. That is where you earn your street cred these days

Real change? NLI rights already going through and kids will be getting paid cash in the next few years.

He is just arguing to speed up the change. It is already irreversibly happening.

And Baker is worth how much you say in this pay for play scenario ? RHJ is a much better player and for that matter MJ is worth more to Rutgers especially if he came back next season.

maybe he just wants to get paid money for working like every other cbb player will be in a few years
and then there will eventually be 1 major basketball and football super conference. All the rest will realize they can't compete. Probably accelerated whenever the eventual recession hits (and it will probably be a dousy) .

Rutgers is already $40,000,000 per year in the hole. Wait until 5-7 ish years down the road when media rights are negotiated for the future and the cord cutting really starts coming. B1G revenue share in 10 years will be considerably less than it is now. Media is changing. Every household in America won't be paying for Fox Sports and ESPN.

I don’t see it as unreasonable that he could make $150-200 an hour for participation in kids basketball clinics. I honestly do think being able to say “camp with basketball star Geo Baker” would add $15-20 to the daily price tag these places could charge so for a group of 30-50 kids in an hour session his cut being $150-200 would be what you’d expect. Factoring in the whole summer - a kid like him could easily make 20k a year on camps alone. Not bad for a college kid.

You’re being naive if you think that’s where this leads. Big booster autograph sessions will become the norm. It will become just another professional league except with no salary cap. Highest bidder wins the National Championship.

I agree with @Greene Rice FIG some will not have the stomach for it and will simply bow out. Rutgers will not have the stomach for a professional sports franchise.

In addition kids will be cutting commercials for every local car dealer, hardware store and super market.

Right now, any downward pressure on rights fees paid by the traditional carriers caused by cord cutting is more than offset by the big streaming companies wanting to get into the game.

Delaney was brilliant to only sign 6 year contracts last time, because if they are willing to give part of the B1G content to Amazon, or let ESPN carry part of the content on ESPN+, etc. revenue will continue to trend upwards for this conference.

You guys are missing the point. They’re not asking for a weekly paycheck. He’s saying that he should be able to sell Geo Baker jerseys or at least get some of the cut from Rutgers selling #0 jerseys which right now he doesn’t! Or get paid to do an interview, podcast, etc, or any appearance, which again he can’t. And that’s honestly ridiculous I don’t care “that’s how it’s been” .... some of your guys’ responses to this are quite sad. The free health and workout resources are in exchange for being a talented basketball player and selling tickets to the game. That’s the fair trade. But that he can’t get paid for using his talents on the side whereas ANY OTHER SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT CAN is the part that needs to change

You snowflakes are so triggered by these kids having a voice. It’s embarrassing how insecure you are that you require feeling superior to be necessary to get through your lives. Grow up.

You just used the wod "triggered" when asking someone to "grow up." 😄

My last post on this: I was using all the infantile words these people use for the .000001 chance they can see they are what they hate. Also, I was mocking them.

Your words have been used a million times as an escape to defend weak positions. I would suggest a stronger argument based on the relevant facts on hand.

I literally just told you that was 100% my intention. To point out that irony. Re: stronger arguments, there have been many very well-stated and eloquent positions already posted. A number are nuanced and quite thoughtful. That job is done.

Your response made you look ridiculous. Trying to let you know in a nice way. No one has ever made a good point by using your words. No one reading your words would think to themselves "wow, he really got me there:". If your point was to cast yourself as a fool, well done. Just trying to let you know so you never ever use it again and think you are winning an argument.

Take another shot folks, here comes the 6th time ive posted this itt. Fwiw i have ZERO issue with these kids running camps for $$$, selling merch for $$$ (while not using the schools logo), making money off podcasts, youtube channels, social media ads for $$$ etc. The question is how do you regulate the payments that would essentially be pay for play? You do realize its okay to not be 100% on one side of the aisle on this discussion right?

Coach: we really want you at ________ University. And our boosters do too. For recruits like you theyre such huge fans that they’ll pay $10,000 each for an autograph session and we have 10 boosters like this. In other words if you sign here they value your NIL so much youll get $100k once you sign.

recruit: coach, im in. Im committing.

Coach: we also have a big fan who owns a car dealership, you commit here he’ll pay a recruit like you $50,000 to do a 30 second commercial

recruit: im in coach, where do i sign

It'll become the norm. Yes schools cheat but it's still against the rules and done in the shadows. Not everyone is game for that and if enforced properly there is a down side. Now make it legal, any booster looking to have a Personal Sports Franchise now has a legal means to do so. These are usually not the most ethical people in their quest to be #1 in whatever they do.

For arguments sake lets say T. Boone Pickens was still alive, he could now legally buy whatever player he wanted under the guise of doing commercials. Who determines what a players likeness is worth, the free market. Oklahoma St. is now in the National Championship business.

Sounds bad well it gets worse. You'll have a lot of schools who just won't have the stomach for running a Sports Franchise and will simply bow out. I truly don't believe Rutgers wants to run a Sports Franchise they just don't want to lose as much money and the B1G provided them a path to that. But becoming profesional is an entirely different matter. "#CHOP" will take on a whole new meaning for the athletic department.

My guy, you are acting as if this isn't happening behind closed doors with the current system. Steve and staff know exactly what they are going up against when a kid has one of these blue bloods on their list, as does Greg. Go pull Bannon out of an Irish pub in Mercer county and ask him how things went down with Jay Williams. Lance Thomas is another one. Watch 'The Scheme' on Showtime for a peek behind the curtain. Why not let this all happen out in the open? The top kids will either go G League or continue to go to blue bloods. Say what you want about the G league, but elite kids are looking at it as the #1 option now, and that will continue especially as the OTE for HS kids begins to bring in more of these elites. Emoni Bates and Mikey Williams will never step on the NCAA hardwood. Interesting that when the top 4 kids go G League this year both Kentucky & Duke quickly fall back to the pack. I digress...most of these kids are micro-influencers at best. There will be some smaller brands or local brands that leverage their reach on campus and within university communities. The kids will be able to speak at camps, run clinics and train local kids in driveways for some extra cash and be able to promote that service using their likeness. Great for hoops and football, really great for lax players, soccer players etc. Name & Likeness should be basic human rights. Geo and crew aren't asking for a slice of the $1B/year from CBS or a take of the gate at the RAC. If a booster down in Kentucky wants to pay each kid $100K a pop, by all means go for it. At least we now know exactly what we are up against. We operate a high major athletic department in the most densely populated state in proximity to one of the world's most wealthy cities. Time to try to innovate and figure out how we make that a competitive advantage as the landscape shifts. The entire NCAA model is about to implode and 1 super conference is in the not too distant future. Making the argument that RU should be against it because our boosters don't want to go as deep in the pocket as others isn't a great reason why we should deny these kids a basic right that pretty much every one else enjoys. Being against this is like Grunniger being against joining the Big East back in the day as it would upset what we have all been accustomed to. It's time to evolve. The game has changed, these kids have changed and are way more educated. Get on board or get left behind...again.

When it’s finally approved there will and should be caps and controls implemented. All you’d have to do is say 40K a year is the max any kid could make as an amateur student athlete and all revenue earning opportunities must be reported to the school (and subject to NCAA audit purposes) for compliance purpose.

Let the lawsuit parade begin. I agree if this happens the money needs to be limited or pooled for all to share. I just can't see giving the right to make money then saying, "O but you can only make "X" off that likeness." There is no Union to negotiate with. For arguments sake you'll have say 60 or more lawsuits between football/basketball right off the bat demanding how unfair this is. Lawyers love a case and money even more.

It's not cut and dry, @scarlethoops mantra is survival of the fittest. Well in a survival of the fittest contest you'll be left with maybe 30 schools and Rutgers won't be a part of that. March Madness and 68 teams is a thing you'll tell your kids about, just like cassette tapes or what's a Walkman.. Create the split, no more money to those schools from Conferences hence they drop sports or drop down. Be careful what you wish for, Title IX showed us, everything has unforeseen consequences.

Survival of the Fittest is spot on. At the end of the day schools will be forced to opt in or opt out of the 'new' model. I agree, RU might not want to ultimately tread into those waters...but just know, it is coming. You have senators that have this on their agendas now. It's not going to go away. Visionary leadership at the NCAA level and within the athletic dept of the schools that 'opt-in' is going to be important. But let's all be honest with each other - what we all are tuning into this week is not 'amateur' athletics.
