Lol, i can name you exactly 2 G leaguers. Myles powell and louis king. And the only reason I know that is I have bets with a couple guys that they wont play more than 10 nba games this year. A g league team would smash a college team so why does no one watch? Hint: people dont care about the players, they care about the schools. Harsh reality
Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen green will be top 5 NBA picks and chose the G league Ignite team over literally any college they could have wanted.

Yup.

For all the people saying Geo is free to not have accepted a scholarship, or not play NCAA basketball, or whatever, you're all free to ignore Geo's tweets if they offend you. Freedom's a great thing that way.

Nah we would much rather call him out on his shortsightedness

It’s called licensing fees.
To use a Yankee uniform you have to pay MLB and the Yankees, a double hit.
USPS for My dads commutative stamp spent months negotiating

Right.

Maybe I misunderstood the point of your original post.

I guess Geo will be fouling out pretty early in the game. Or maybe he will walk to center court and sit down at half time like the 1995 UMASS game. Can’t waste an opportunity to get attention to your cause.

Yes, I remember reading that LOL! (seriously. Not being a smart ***). I agree.
Sorry, I skim read. In the past, people have replied to me, “I posted my exact thoughts ten times on here.” I’m like, sorry I didn’t read those threads? Lol.

Yeah cept Iowa is a 5, not a 10 seed and they have some guy named Garza and just a few more weapons. And tons of recent tourney experience.
They are a 2. And both players are stuck in a hotel room, they can't watch film 16 hours a day. They can do whatever they want... except go outside.

I don’t understand — if you believe this, you should have no issue with players seeking compensation. By your logic, the free market won’t assign them any value, and everybody moves on.
Haha for the 4th time in this thread. I have zerooooooo issue with these kids getting money where they are providing valuable services. Like hosting camps, getting endorsement deals but heres the reality. Please pin this so I dont have to do it a 5th time

Coach: we really want you at ________ University. And our boosters do too. For recruits like you theyre such huge fans that they’ll pay $10,000 each for an autograph session and we have 10 boosters like this. In other words if you sign here they value your NIL so much youll get $100k once you sign.

recruit: coach, im in. Im committing.

Coach: we have a big fan who owns a car dealership, you commit here he’ll pay a recruit like you $50,000 to do a 30 second commercial

recruit: im in coach, where do i sign

My only issue with this is none of these guys have been doing anything about it. It's tweet tweet tweet and comments on IG posts. Congrats. I'm in the pay the players camp, but there isnt much action done to move the needle

Okay let’s quantify this then. Approximately how many points does tweeting days before an upcoming game cost a team?

And guess what, no one cares or has seen them play this year lol. Ive never even heard of jalen green, kuminga i have but honestly forgot about him. And you further my point, why didnt geo baker go g league? No one forced him to play college ball, did they?

It Geo shoots 1-6 against Clemson and we lose will that be an acceptable reason for bringing it up as a critique of his play after this tweet?

God I hope we don’t get blown out.

Not sure I’m following this conversation fully but a player’s value is a function of both the team and the player.

Yes, but the players also have a significant role in creating the value of the team and the institution. Coach K is a heck of a coach, but he had to bring in quite a few talented players over the years to turn Duke into Duke. This success has (as far as I can tell) been good financially for Duke.

No, idiot, if he shoots 1-6 on Friday it won’t be because of his tweeting. Is this a serious post??

Don't be surprised when a whole crop of 5 stars every year leave for the G league. Why should they care about you watching them? They're getting paid NOW. And they are gonna get drafted and make millions next year.

Duh, wrong Google seed. But that just makes the point better.
Do they not have any class time to make up or are the interns doing it for them?
How bout reading a book?
How bout learning or playing chess?
Why can't they set up a big room to bring games in like a pool table or ping pong?
Why exactly can't teams take turns using the pool after sanitized?
I'm not defendingvtge short sighted nature of the ncaa or the cheapness of Rutgers

It will grow if they allow more high schoolers to elect to go directly the G League/get rid of the one and done rule and create a G League draft. Right now, they’re picking a few high schoolers for one team (G League Ignite). I know an NBA employee that was part of their rebranding efforts and helps the business side of the teams in the northeast. They have big plans for expanding it. If it becomes the minor league that they want it to, their gain will be the NCAA’s loss. The main thing that is turning top recruits towards the G League is the NCAA’s strict amateurism rules. If they don’t reform them, I expect the G League to become attended like folks who attend minor league baseball. Go to Somerset to see the next Yankee ace. Go to Westchester to see the Knicks future point guard.

Counterpoints:
(1) Draconian amateur-status rules are actually stupid.
(2) Getting paid for a shirt with your name on it or something similar is not actually being paid to play a sport.
Counterpoints to the counterpoints

1. they almost have to be because people will take advantage of ever little opportunity in bad ways
2. Can you imagine what things would look like if you got paid for selling jerseys in college.

How does that affect Rutgers? Who cares. There are only a handful of kids every year at that level. The top 100 kids could go to the G league and there will still be great college basketball. Btw those kids belong in the NBA at 18

I think the players main complaint would be why not give each player a gift card to buy their own personal products instead of uniformly wasting tens of thousands of dollars on personal products that 95% of the players are not going to use as if they are robots wanting to use the same toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, etc. 68 teams, 15 or so players each, over 1000 players getting the same stupid deodorant, soap, toothpaste, etc. OH YEAH, the NCAA can't do that without risking the eligibility of each player that accepts the gift card to buy their own personal products, dumb me. The hypocrisy of their own rules.

I guess we've found the "shut up and dribble" thread. Thanks for showing yourselves guys. Especially bac2therac, who claims to be the expert voice of RUTGERS Basketball. In the words of Donald Trump, "you're fired!"
What a woke thing to say...

and Ingraham’s comment wasn’t about anything related to this it was about how athletes here will trash the USA 24/7 while shutting up and dribbling for countries like China because it would hurt their wallets to speak out on the hideous things going on there. And sadly, shutting up and dribbling is exactly what they do.

IDK. what they do to prep. as long as they come out to play better than they have last 4 to 5 games.

Every student athlete should have a RIGHT to their name image and likeness. Everyone else does so why not them?

No offense but is it possible that Geo is not laser focused on playing Clemson if he is acting as a SJW for pay for play issues in CBB?

And I won’t call you an idiot no matter what your response. If you choose to respond.

I'm sure it is from sponsors and decreases the risk of exposure. But I'm sure degree and dove really loved the appreciation JB showed there.
One thing they could have done was create a prize room or little store where the players on each floor could have gone in to get their own selections.

But I bet this. If all that stuff was sitting in a room unguarded and free. JB would have helped himself to the mother load.

They’re student athletes not pros. They’re already getting a free education...

And wouldn’t recruiting just turn into basically a bidding war?

Counterpoints to the counterpoints

1. they almost have to be because people will take advantage of ever little opportunity in bad ways
2. Can you imagine what things would look like if you got paid for selling jerseys in college.

1. Not sure the draconian rules are automatically harder to take advantage of than more sensible ones.

2. Not really. This is the reason for my mixed feelings. I see the potential for destruction of college sports as I currently enjoy it. The problem is this is basically the only reason I can think of to support the NCAA being allowed to do what it currently does.

Once anyone is making large profits off your play, even if you don't see those profits, it ceases to be "amateur" sports in any meaningful way IMO.

You play chess? You know it includes individual piece movement, strategy, and focus right?
IDK. what they do to prep. as long as they come out to plat better than they have last 4 to 5 games.

Ok, so chess good for basketball performance in two days. Tweeting bad for basketball performance in two days.

Can we get a list of what is good and bad and by how much to complement your estimate of how much tweeting affects play?

I don't know what being "laser focused on playing Clemson" looks like TWO DAYS FROM THE GAME, NOT DURING PRACTICE.

Presumably his alternate activities would be like, schoolwork, or playing video games, or chess as 1984 suggests, not "being laser focused on playing Clemson".

For the vast majority of college athletes monetizing their name and likeness really means monetizing their affiliation to the school they play for. Why would I say/think this? Just look at how many are able to monetize their name and likeness once they graduate. A precious few earn millions, and the other thousands of kids either stop playing completely or are relegated to earning a few thousand dollars month to play.

Thats totally fine. Basically no one watches college basketball to pay attention for nba purposes. Id venture to say 99%+ of all people watching college ball watch for the name on the front rather than the name on the back. I hope the g league does that so these kids can stop complaining and just realize theyre not as good as they think

It goes both ways. The school needs good players to make money off of basketball. (Almost all) players need the school as well.

This isn’t a conversation about Rutgers. We’re talking about the G League vs NCAA future. Imagine the majority of the top recruits that usually commit to title contenders go to the G League out of high school. No Ayo or Kofi. No Hunter Dickerson. No Cade Cunningham. Wouldn’t it make watching G League games more fun than a couple of teams filled with 3 stars? If the G League truly became a farm system, it would hurt the NCAA. What makes it more appealing is that they get paid, they get NIL and they don’t get suspended because the local bodega gave them a free pack of cookies.
