Why does everybody think other people read every single comment of theirs? Of course they’re not just in their rooms all the time, they still practice. But the day they went to the racetrack was Monday, the last day until strict bubble rules were put in place by the NCAA. Now that all teams are in Indianapolis, nobody’s aloud off of their hotel floor unless it’s for practice/game and the NCAA is making them wear these:

Btw..it was Selection Sunday.

The funny thing is that if things open up to paying players to pay there will be fewer teams and guys like Geo will have less opportunity not more.

I don’t think there would be fewer teams. If (theoretically) a team couldn’t afford to pay players it would just recruit players who couldn’t command interest from the schools handing out paychecks.

Disappointing but not unexpected. Looking forward to turning the page next season.
I would not be surprised that at least 4 scholarship players leave at the end of this season ,ie, Baker,Young,Doucoure and Johnson.

Such a slippery slope. Can’t you see Clemson or Bama boosters paying $1000k for autographs of a recruit. Would make it all legal now.
Yes I know dirty money exists, but this would blow it away.
RU athletics would be destroyed.
Geo is just worried about getting his. Not the forest fire.

The large majority of these kids overestimate what their value is. I’m a fan of Geo’s but I’m not buying his jersey or paying for an autograph. Heck I find it odd that other grown men wear jerseys with another man’s name on the back (in this case a man that is only a few years removed from childhood).

Outside of the Zion Williamson‘s of the world most D1 college players aren’t getting rich off of their likeness and image. They will be very disappointed if they were valued by what the market will bear.

So when RU has a table set up in the halls with kids waiting for an autograph they would have to pay them????

Oh well lol. But everything else is still correct. Now that everybody’s in Indy. Bubble rules are in effect.
I'd take that tracking device and put it somewhere. I could come up with 10 different ways to better deal with this while keeping players healthy both physically and mentally.

But ps...IF this tourney is a source of pride after all the player sacrifices..then they need to suck up for just a tad longer or book the plane back on sat. Morning. Then it will be all over if thats what they want.

Now it’s Geo, Harper and Myles that want to make pay for play an issue before our 1st ncaa game in 30 years?

Playing for RU has put them into position to earn high level incomes for years to come as professional players.

A few more sheckels go on Clemson in this one. Will anyone be surprised if we get blown out by Clemson? And why aren’t Clemson players making these types of headlines?

Sweet Pea may want to consider this development before he makes his game pick.

He already has. Wait for his comments . From euphoria to gloom.

It would be more like minor league baseball. They’d only sign if they wanted to. If they’re a big time player and they don’t feel like signing, you can buy one online. Sort of like when I got Gary Sanchez’s autograph while he was in Trenton shortly before he signed with Steiner Sports.

There isn’t really any parody in recruiting now; so I don’t see how this would make the situation worse. In fact, it may give other places a chance to compete without having to build crazy complexes like Clemson’s.

And really those issues shouldn’t stand in the way of finding a way to give players a share of the revenue they generate. Two separate things. There is doing what’s right / the (separately) figuring out how to adapt to the sports to the consequences.

I agree. Imagine if an elite player has the ability to make money off of his name, selling jerseys, selling autographs, running camps, might entice them go to different markets.

Yeah earlier in this thread I said I felt like this tweet isn’t just about NIL. They’re also frustrated about the current situation. NCAA had almost a year to plan this and these are their best ideas?

“Congrats on making the tournament! Now stay on your floor at least six feet away from your teammates and eat whatever crappy food we’ve prepared. We have sponsors to meet with.”

And they would lose and lose money and stop fielding a team.

It’s gotten to the point where Geo is just annoying with this. Same with Harper.

The response from the RUscrewpodcast is hilarious

The best argument against NIL rights for athletes is the rampant cheating that would happen with money pouring in from boosters and dopes. So essentially we are punishing the kids for a lack of control of the adults that root for them

Nothing wrong with what he tweeted. He avoided the ill-advised comparison he made last time he brought this up.

And now is exactly the time to do so. Advocating for change when people are paying close attention is always the best time to do it.

Selling jerseys with whose name on it?
Who’s uniform would the player be wearing in a picture to sign?

I made the mistake of listening to one of those. Not sure how long it took me to realize they were idiots. I think it was maybe 30 seconds.
Lolll I’ve never listened. I was actually referring to their response on Twitter which bac had mentioned... Saying that if RU chooses not to take the floor to a of people will support them. Sad

No, I’m actually very educated on the amateur sports landscape. I learned about the AAU circuit and the college basketball experience from a family member and their friends, some of whom are still in the industry. I also learned about the futbol academy system in Europe from another family member. Even if they don’t make the senior team, they’re still make a wage while in the system. I expect the G League to grow into that very soon. Not just that one team, but a farm system. The NCAA’s refusal to budge on this issue will be their downfall. But go ahead and believe that a scholarship to School X is enough while the NCAA loses more and more players to the G League in the coming years.
Lol, i can name you exactly 2 G leaguers. Myles powell and louis king. And the only reason I know that is I have bets with a couple guys that they wont play more than 10 nba games this year. A g league team would smash a college team so why does no one watch? Hint: people dont care about the players, they care about the schools. Harsh reality

Players wouldn’t be able to find or hire a promoter, broker or agent, it would be a waste of time for them.

I don’t understand — if you believe this, you should have no issue with players seeking compensation. By your logic, the free market won’t assign them any value, and everybody moves on.

Geo Baker tweets during the endless hours he’s spending sitting around waiting for Friday and everyone here loses their collective ****.

Meanwhile, this is how Jordan Bohannon is spending his free time.

But sure, we’re certainly going to lose on Friday now because Geo Baker tweeted something.

Everyone against Jordan Bohannon, Geo Baker and others just want their NCAA tournament and could care less what happens to the players after their career ends.....yet I see commercials with players from multiple schools, in advertising all week long.

How about we film the players playing, kid makes a game winning shot, millions of fans go crazy and the schools head coach secures a 50K bonus and contract extension.

The player who hits the shot, is famous, isn't Zion Williamson, Gordon Hayward or Kris Jenkins.....if you don't know who Kris Jenkins is, that's part of the problem....he never sniffed the NBA, but buried the game winner vs North Carolina in 2016.....

How many times should the NCAA in pregame hype, show Jenkins, Bryce Drew, Kyle Guy (UVA) , Michael Jordan vs GTown in 82, "Whittenburg......??!!!""....it's over, Wolfpack wins.....!!!....Valvano losing his freaking mind.

This is American Culture at it's highest.....it's not the Super Bowl, but it is a close 2nd.....it has passed MLB, NBA and others as much as any sporting event.....I casually watch the Olympics every 4 years, but I follow college sports.

Mark Emmert......linked article makes millions to do what exactly?? What did he do this summer when there was going to be no football....he did nothing, said nothing because he's a figurehead.....

The college sports landscape doesn't need Mark Emmert.....and if the NCAA wants to use a players likeness in a gazillion commercials for the next 20 years, that player SHOULD have a right to compensation for the NCAA profiting off that sports event seen around the world.

Unfortunately for everyone here that isn't in favor or wealth sharing or feels players have no rights, they actually do....and it's absurd to say a player can't walk and chew gum at the same time, can't express himself when he's being ripped off.....

BUT....

It's all good when Myles Johnson carries an engineering degree, a schedule down to the last minute, busts his tail to not only play well, but represents the university.....It's great for Myles to carry an IBM internship during this run to March Madness....is he focused....?? No one says Myles isn't focused carrying an absurd schedule of academics, but let a kid tweet his thoughts for an hour and he's not focused on a game 2 days away.....??

Fans here.....man....it's great to be alive, enjoy the games, but don't be ridiculous calling out a rigged system......you can't even put a 6 month old baby's face on a Huggies box without the parent of that child getting paid.....but Geo or any NCAA player who generates almost a billion dollars in advertising, should get nothing???

Not sure I’m following this conversation fully but a player’s value is a function of both the team and the player.

Can’t possibly read 7 pages of this crap, so at the risk of somebody saying it previously...Rothstein should just STFU. When he says
“Would you prefer to go back to the situation we endured last year?” I’d like to know exactly what he endured. Whatever it is, it can’t be close to the isolation and sacrifice these players have made to stay healthy.

i really hate this sj crap, but i hate the ncaa much more...throw these kids a few crumbs
if it's just their name only, i see no harm...maybe someone can enlighten me on the damage it would cause......god forbid "the geo baker bb camp" the poor ncaa may collapse because geo baker used his name to run a camp....if this is the only thing these kids are asking for well,.......have a heart ncaa

Presumably if you sell something Rutgers branded you are supposed to pay the university for that right?
It’s called licensing fees.
To use a Yankee uniform you have to pay MLB and the Yankees, a double hit.
USPS for My dads commemorative stamp spent months negotiating

Yup.

For all the people saying Geo is free to not have accepted a scholarship, or not play NCAA basketball, or whatever, you're all free to ignore Geo's tweets if they offend you. Freedom's a great thing that way.
Yeah, but when he does it wearing a Rutgers Jersey he is perhaps a defacto agent of the school. And therefor a reflection on me as an alumni.
Take off the uniform and say whatever the frack you want.
