Do you see many wide open 3s for us, we are being defended quite well imo.

I think pretty much every three we took today was a decent look (there may have been a couple bad ones, I don't remember every shot) and I also remember at least three possessions where we passed up open looks from three only to put up something forced or turn it over at the end of the shot clock.

Sometimes we have two and sometimes three guys do it.

I think that all of their shots should be 3 pointers... Heck, RU shot 5-22, 22.7% from 3 point range today. If all of the 55 shots they took today had been 3's, and they continued to make 22.7% of them, they would have made 12 to 13 three point shots, which would be a total of 36 to 39 points from the field, plus the points from their foul shots.... Maryland only scored 68 points, so... Oh wait... Never mind. (wink)

The way the game is played today, you have to be a threat from 3 to have any chance of being a dangerous team. I think 16-20 is the right number; we just have too many guys who can‘t hit the ocean right now.

It’s this simple.

Do you think there exists an offensive strategy that would allow this team to win consistently with 23% 3 point shooting? I don't. I think you have to accept that you will lose most of the time you shoot that badly against a competent opponent.

This is the bottom line. We had good looks. We are playing scared. Time for boys to become men. Make a fing shot. I could shoot better than we do and I am 60 years old.

this x 1000

We are shooting 26% from three over the last 12 games...on about 19 attempts a game...which we won 5.

as a whole ...I would give the Average quality of look around a 6.5. We are missing a lot of open shots.

it’s 2/3 mental.

If we shot 36% in the last 12 games ..just a
.we would have made another 22 threes ...equating to 6 ppg more ...

thats 2 or3 more wins we don’t have some how or some way.

the worse part is that we keep letting the result of the last shot dictate of the next one goes up...and there are more than a few times we pass up a good shot because we miss the last one...and end up with a shot of lesser quality

As per the end of my post, I was teasing about wanting them to take all 3's... It's hard to pick a number of 3's per game we'd like the team to shoot when we don't know how badly they'll shoot... We shot even worse today than the horrid 27.6% that we averaged for the previous 12 games... I honestly don't know if the 3 point shooting is going to improve like you predicted it will yesterday in the Overmatched thread. This is a bad shooting team right now and I'll be surprised if our 3 point shooting significantly improves in the remaining games. I hope I'm wrong.

Knew you were joking about that lol but wasn't sure if you were implying we should take almost zero or very few as some seem to be advocating.

Our season average is 31.8% now, good for 261st nationally. If I had to put up an over/under on percentage for the rest of the season I'm probably putting it at like 30.5 or 31%.

The correct answer is zero. We don't have anyone who can make them consistently enough to justify it. The joke last season was that our entire half court offense was a three man weave at the top of the key for 20 seconds followed by a contested three. This season it's worse - our offense appears to be pass the ball around the perimeter for 20 seconds then take a mildly contested three from 5 feet beyond the three point line. The results aren't any better.

If you can't make them, you're throwing away possessions by shooting them. After a while, it's on the coach for letting them shoot (and miss) them.

And your suggestion is? Again, to be successful in today’s college game, 3s are necessary. Hard stop.

Yes. Early in the shot clock. We hesitate and don't take the open ones that take worse shorts later. Again and again.

This is exactly right. Stop hesitating to take the open shot. If it’s there; take the damn shot. Pike is doing a terrible job causing indecisive behavior in these guys because he wants to work the clock so he can play defense and keep the score low. But you can’t always dictate that and if the shot is available then you take it without hesitation. I really think this is a big part of our shooting woes now. It doesn’t allow for any rhythm and causes over thinking. Harper is a mess now - he’s not even close on most of his shots.

Disagree. Stop shooting them. Let the Geo and Harper shoot mid-range jumpers and push the ball up the court (and immediately to the basket) at every opportunity. Young needs more time on the court and a green light to run up and down the court at full speed (even if it results in an occasional wildly out of control missed layup; they aren't any worse than the no-chance-in-hell long range threes that are thrown up every third possession). And let Myles do something on offense other than set picks at the top of the key.

Your comment about working the clock and keeping the score low is spot on.Pikiell knows the team lacks shooters and so he feels the only way to win is with games in the 55-65 point range. The problem with that strategy is most B1G teams have better 3 point shooters and they don't wait until the end of the shot clock to shoot. My concern is that the 8 players getting the most minutes are mostly upper class men and they have shown a downward slide in scoring.

I voted 31-35.
I'm voting for the offense Rutgers as a program should ve striving for.
Regardless of current roster and coaching staff.

That is the problem with this poll. What the current team should do if different then what the program philosophy should be.

Same thing happened in Football during the OC Kill/OC McN era.
"We should be playing faster, throwing more."
"That's not our game. That's not what we practice and recruit for."

Ok - well it's more than time to change "our game" after this season (hiring OC Gleeson).
You can only be 13th in conference 3pt shooting for so long.

This is fair but honestly I was more interested in what people think the strategy should be with the current group of players.
