I know RU beat Indiana State on March 14, 1978 in the NIt. Is there any footage from the game? My father is big Larry Bird fan and i wanted to acquire some of the film. I can’t seem to locate anything online. Does any footage actually exist? Thanks!

I didn’t know we beat Bird his Jr year. That’s pretty cool. Article says we played a box and 1 and held him to 23 pts. He averaged 30 and 11.5 rebounds that year.

What a great game that was! In addition to the game, you had the bird fan direct from Indiana dressed in a long cape with full "Bird Man" garb on. Then after the win we all got to watch Larry Bird knocking out an RU fan at mid court. It was a one non-stop crazy night.

Bailey hit a baseline jumper to give RU the lead with a second or two left
Bird got the ball a little over half court and launched a shot that hit the rim and was a bit scary, looked like it might go in
It was reported that Bird had an altercation
With a fan or two just after the game ended
It was a great game and Bird and Bailey played well

Bird and ISU's next loss after Rutgers in the '78 NIT was not until the '79 NCAA championship final against Michigan State and Magic Johnson. They were undefeated and something like 33-0 that next season going into that final.

The RAC was standing room only. Bailey scored the last seven points for RU. Everyone held their breath when Bird launched the desperation shot. I was hosting Knightline that night and sprinted to my car as soon as the shot rimmed out so I missed Bird‘s altercation. One of my top 5 games at the RAC.

Abdel Anderson did a hell of job making Larry bird work that night...JB hit the game winner with about 15 second to go

who did RU beat to get to Indiana state ? Army and coach K....
Pretty sure it was Kelvin Troy on him and I was at the game.
Even more interesting is the fact that we were the last team to beat ISU until they lost in the final the following year

Were you the former host who was my adversary at a deposition, where I predicted each league game in RU’s improbable run to a home tournament final and win against Penn State in Wenzel’s first year?

No, it was absolutely Anderson for more than half of the game. And Abdel would not be happy to hear that you did not notice.

I was at the game, and I seem to recall Bird taking a swing at a fan as he was running off the court.

Worked the game - witnessed the Bird altercation.

He smashed a heckler with a haymaker busting eyeglasses - blood and glass on the floor.

All these years later the game itself has become something of a blur in my mind but I can still remember you and the other ushers coming back to the house and telling us about it.

That was me. I remember saying “Your mouth to God’s ears”. He obviously listened!

Troy was a very talented player. On both ends.

Loved Troy as a player...... my one complaint was that I thought he often put the ball too hard off the backboard when going in for a layup..... not a soft touch in that regard, IMO

he did have a rep nationally as a very good defender

Regarding whether it was Anderson or Troy on Bird

RU only played Bailey, Anderson, Copeland, Duncan, Troy, Brown and Heferle and Bailey played only 21 minutes according to the reports. If I recall correctly, with Bailey in the game Anderson was on Bird but when Bailey sat Anderson moved to center on D and Troy came in and was put on Bird.

Apparently Bird was a legendary brawler in bars.
Awesome game. Crowd in RAC was insane Bailey was a force at the end. My last year of medical school at Rutgers. I was there with a surgeon who did work with Rutgers athletics and we went to take a look at student Bird clobbered. Messy.

Was there too... behind the bench. Bird had the ball in his hands at the end and couldn’t deliver. James did a great job and it was team D...

The word I got from Joe Boylan as he was walking off the court was that a student jumped on Bird's back and called him 'bird-sh*t'. Bird then clobbered him.

Spot on - had a crappy assignment and witness the "best" post game event.
