In baseball, I don't believe you have to be a close knit group. Just do your job. It is very different than other sports. You could have your teammate you hate the most on second base and your feelings about him don't matter and can have zero effect on your own task at hand which is to get a hit and have him score.
And I think in a very dysfunctional way, those Met's of the 80's were a lot closer than many of the feel good nice guy teams out there. We all know they made the playoffs in 86 & 88 but to many disappointments, missed the playoffs in 84/85/87/89/90 but if there was a wildcard team, they would have made it in 84/85/87/90 and the 89 team would have missed by 1 game. That is a hell of a run for any team.
We can never compete with the Yankees history. And now 90's and early 2000's are "History"...We are now a decade past anything significant the Yankees have done. And in the last decade, only 1 NY team made the WS.
Yankees are still much better run, they have a great minor league system and money to spend and they do spend it. But over the last decade, you really don't own a lot of bragging rights. Always good enough to either make the playoffs or come very close. But never good enough to be the last team standing. We can't brag for losing the WS in 2015 but that means you Yankee fans have nothing to brag about either as you spend the money and can't even lose the last baseball game of the year...

Agree. By its nature, baseball is the most individualistic of the team sports. In say basketball, if the point guard hates the power forward there could be problems. But in baseball, if the catcher hates the right fielder, who cares?

That is why I think "chemistry" in baseball is WAY overrated. I am much more concerned about physics - the physics of hitting and throwing the ball.

I think Zappaa may disagree here. I think good clubhouse guys go a long way in baseball and narcissists can be a problem. We have seen this but it can also be overcome.

I think in general it is better if everyone likes each other in all sports but winners want to win. You put your personal differences aside and go out and try to win as a team. If you can’t do that you probably bounce around to a lot of teams willing to give you a chance because of talent but winning is the goal.

I think there's a big difference between guys that get along and guys who are narcissists. In baseball, you don't have to get along at all. But if you've got a guy who doesn't hustle, doesn't show up on time, etc, that's more of an isue.

Agree- and those bad boy teams that consistently won, all played hard. That includes the mid/late 80’s Mets. Keith May have actually been the biggest narcissist on that team but his was driven by on field accomplishments

Back to topic - looks like Dykstra did not respond too well to the judge's ruling. Highlights of his latest tirade:

• Claimed that Darling faked his cancer.
• Charged that the Wilpons were complicit in covering it up.
• Having just been involved in a fender bender, he suggested that Darling and the Wilpons may have attempted to assassinate him.
• Claimed that the judge who ruled in the case was bribed.
• And from out of left field, he took a shot at former Phillies teammate Dale Murphy, whose son took a rubber bullet in a Denver protest.

It’s simply a bad look for the Mets and their small fan base. You never see this type of public fighting on any yanks championship teams of the past 20 years. And they won way more rings. Shows me mets aren’t a close knit group. Not a true team atmosphere in queens. Likely explains their lack of success and the disarray in the fan base. They should try and model their organization after the yanks.

Basing a teams results over the past 20 years on two guys who didn't like each other 30+ years ago is precious.
