Every year people get sick from one virus or another, some get a little sick and deal with it on their own, whilst unknowingly passing it on to others. Other people get really sick and need to go to a doctor, and some people even die...every year.. This virus just happens to have a catchy name and every solitary case of it is reported...otherwise I don't see much difference and feel that life should just go on. People should always have been washing hands, etc, and older or more vulnerable people should always have been more vigilant.

Shitting down a basketball game with no fans isn’t going to do anything to help the situation. The chances are so slim that anything would happen at those games. All the things described above are the real problems. Are people going to the movies tonight? Disney? Kids playing sports? School? Riding the subway? Buses, trains? There are so many other things that need to be shut down as well. If they are not then shutting down these games are meaningless.

I think his point is the media credibility is so bad, that when they report they are skewing certain issues.....I think politics needs to stay out of this but apparently the msm cannot help itself. The media isnt to blame for anything here but the media should concentrate on FACTS and how we can improve the situation going forward rather than concentrate on what we didnt do right the past two weeks...there will be plenty of time for post mortums. We need to figure out the best foot forward now and get everyone united with just facts and the right medical professionals speaking not a Rachel Maddow sounding hysteria alarms..and ditto for Sean Hannity downplaying everything. These are the people you should not be watching

When Trumps chief of staff told people to turn off the TV, that is probably the best advice you could give someone.

Its an election year...lots of people have a lot at stake hoping this virus devastates this country...Id bet a lot on the political left would be willing to go through an economic depression and have a million Americans die if that means the person they voted for would become president. No doubt.

Do 15,000 people gather at one time in a school classroom? On a bus?

I agree that theme parks should be closed.

The media aren't the experts. They are just relaying the information from experts.

The sad thing is the constant attack on "fake news" has made it so some just don't believe anything anymore.

I am just relaying information from experts. People who already have a the uninformed gut reaction that this isnt serious will just say its media hype. I dont see any experts saying this isnt going to get bad. None. Scientists deal with science not political nonsense and gut feelings

What do pandemic experts have to do with Russian collusion?

Alot. Their are no consequences for the panic and alarm that they spread throughout the country.

Russia collusion was an absolute lie and not one person was fired at CNN for spreading false hoods.

Climate change experts predicted in 2004 that britian would be in a "siberian" climate by 2020. Now that we are in 2020, is Britian in a siberian climate? Nope. Experts got it wrong again.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that if these pandemic experts are wrong they will be right back on tv in 5 years for the next pandemic....

No one under 30 has had problems. There are no people in the stands. It is a complete over reaction.

You realize people can spread the virus and have 0 or very mild symptoms, even athletes? That was a stupid question, of course you don't.

What a moronic statement.

Why? This is 100% true. Did you see what Jim Acosta said immediately after trumps address last night?

If you didnt see it he said

"I think we should point out, at one point during this address the president referred to the coronavirus as a quote 'foreign virus"....Now, why the president would go as far as to describe it as a foreign virus? That is something we’ll also be asking questions about,"

Acosta is attacking the president for calling the virus that started in China a "foreign virus." Jim Acosta and CNN want this president to fail and dont care about the carnage. That is why is said this he wants to attack the president for somethign anything.

Mortality rates will only decrease if public health mandates are followed and the healthcare supply exceeds demand. Ignoring the mandates will not result in lower mortality until all those who are susceptible are already dead.

But mortality rates are not the key metric. The key thing is overall mortality. Who cares if the rate drops from 2% to 1% if the deaths keep adding up (albeit at a slower rate) ?

Scangg.... Mueller report showed Russia collusion was a joke. No alex jones or fox news. The fact that i am alive in 2020 and Britain doesnt have the same climate as siberia is proof the climate scientist were wrong in 2004. You can make jokes but cant really deny the truth.

Never ceases to amaze me how random low information people have such strong confident opinions about incredibly complicated topics. So confident that they feel they can contradict scientists on climate change, public health officials on COVID, etc. And do so totally confidently. Based on some stuff they found on the internet. Doesn't speak well for the future. And it seems like the biggest resource our society lacks to ensure a great future is a little humility.

Given the mass hysteria about cancelling conference tournaments with no fans and everyone that agrees with it. What are your thoughts that all modes of public transportation are still operating as normal. Which are the places that are the core and main reason for why this stuff spreads. No public outcry about that. That's why this whole thing makes no sense. There's insane hysteria about people playing pickup games in empty arenas vs nothing about hundreds of thousands of people crossing boarders via mass transport today. Makes no sense and won't until they completely shut that down too

Jimmy, yes that is a fair point...and it may come to that..but most working people (e.g. especially those who rely on public transportation) can't afford to stay home and/or their employers aren't allowing paid time off.

So for now, only travel and some 'luxuries' (sports) are curtailed.

I am not confident but dont tell me kids who have been living together for the past 3 months and for the past 3 days in very close quarters cant play a game of basketball that they have already played 11 times against other schools and practiced everyday with each other since the issue was formally addressed by the president. Dont tell me that they are in imminent danger while i ride the MTA everyday with thousands of people on seats that havent been cleaned.

unlike some people i have some common sense and am smart enough to realize that people have been wrong in the past about complicated topics like climate change and public health...

Completely agree with you.

The last three and a half years have made it a badge of honor to show how stupid one is.

And the irony is that part of the schtick is to tell everyone else how stupid and hysterical they are.

Wow, there are A LOT of ill-informed comments on this thread. Did some of you actually go to college? Did some of you learn how to use your critical thinking skills. The **** spouted here and parroted from some of the extremists on the web is not only laughable but downright scary.

Please just stop. Take it to the CE board and type that garbage over there to your heart's content. Please leave this basketball thread to BASKETBALL and let the experts decide what is best for our student-athletes, coaches and administrators. This isn't some vast conspiracy. We are living in a global pandemic. Read, inform yourselves and stop blaming others for what you don't understand.

Except that travel and these "luxuries" that you speak of also provide the jobs for "working people" who also can't afford to stay home.

The rest of life is being shut down. With no leadership from the top, then it's happening sporadically. But's its still happening. And it's not just about the 11 students. It's the coaches, the team support staff, the hundreds needed to open the venues even with no guests, media, and hundreds of others. And if you aren't going to go forward with the whole tournament, don't just let 1 more game go forward.

In the United States, the 1952 polio epidemic became the worst outbreak in the nation's history. Of the nearly 58,000 cases reported that year, 3,145 died and 21,269 were left with mild to disabling paralysis, and the Yankees won the World Series in 7 games.

there was no internet back then

growing up as a kid in the 70s there was a lot of hysteria over catching the swine flu

Right - of course there was no internet but is that the reason this crisis is being handled so differently? I mean - Schools are shutting left and right mainly because of the fear of kids being rampant carriers. Im not talking about universities - grade school kids seem to be largely unharmed by Corona. Back then, schools carried on despite the spread of polio to children with devastating consequences directly to them. Was it mainly because large scale shut downs were so much more difficult to communicate?

Just a joke. Complete and utter joke.
Clueless. If we followed the advice of folks like you and did nothing, we'd likely have 5-10X more deaths than from the flu (150-600K instead of the 30-60K we see from the flu) and we'd have most of them (and serious infections requiring hospitalizations) occurring in a very short period, given the much greater transmission rate than flu, overwhelming our systems. That's why governments are working so hard to contain this. Maybe read up a little...
