some posting on here must be the same guys panic buying toilet paper--it never is good to be hysterical or to love to watch train wrecks--get a grip--we know the seriousness --who needs the fear mongering
Actually, most don't know the seriousness of the situation or they wouldn't be arguing about things like social distancing and aggressive testing being so critical to prevention of an epidemic. Show me one post of mine that's "hysterical" - been simply trying to provide relatively balanced scientific data and analysis. And to imply that people warning other people actually like this in some way ("love to watch train wrecks") is simply uncalled for.

Pearl Jam is politicizing it like they do everything. Put temp scanners at security and purell stations in the arenas, at worst you maybe move the spokane regional to a back up site
Seriously? Temp scanners are useless, given that infected, but asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic people wouldn't have fevers, but would be very contagious. And Purell stations address a very minor infection pathway - surfaces - person to person contact, via sneezing/coughing and even breathing, is by far, the most prevalent transmission pathway. Any other scientific input you'd care to enlighten us with?

You’re both on extremes here. There’s not certainty that it’s airborne vs. droplet based so breathing near someone by itself may not be as bad as you think. It’s also crazy to understate the importance of 1) Purell and hand washing and 2) avoiding hand to face contact. Watch how often the people around you touch their mouths/noses/eyes and this will all make a lot more sense.

At the same time, it’s obviously a substantial risk for older and at risk populations. I don’t think anyone here would like a day-to-day 85% chance of living.

I’m going to keep living my life, washing my hands, and avoiding hand to face contact, but if I were in a higher risk bucket or didn’t have the discipline to keep my hands out of my mouth I’d probably reconsider.

It doesn't have to be airborne to make being near someone a risk. In close quarters (crowded subway/bus, standing room only event, etc), someone coughing/sneezing can create droplets to land on the faces/hair/hands/clothing/phones/personal items/etc of people nearby. This is the reason for the "social distancing" - to avoid large congregations of people where droplets can more rapidly be spread person to person.

Phones are a big transmission vector in hospitals, and I'd imagine they would be for this as well. People touch their phone, then wash their hands, then touch their phone again - or lift their phone to their face without cleaning it. Doctors are guilty of this, and it has been identified as one way that MRSA can spread in hospitals.

Twitter today shows how Germany has handled the situation. US did not act. Germany had a test within 1 week after Chinese scientists released the genome information. World Health .Org. Had one shortly and gave it to 60 countries. The US said no. Germany had as many reported early cases as Italy, but tested and unlike Italy that has hundreds of new cases daily, Germany has only 2 deaths. They have a drive by test swabbing center. It is now reported they have identified a drug today that can treat Covid 19. They identified the problem, tested for it and controlled it. Unlike our reaction here in the US . The 2 and a half month delay in treating it seriously is causing this spike. Testing and quarantining people will reduce the number of cases and spreading. China is almost done with it now.

Right, so everyone should cover their nose/mouth, wash or sanitize their hands often, and otherwise avoid touching their faces. Anyone in at-risk groups should likely exercise significantly more caution when going to crowded places.

The problems are people not doing those simple things, and people panicking. Posts like the one I quoted that literally say breathing spreads it are dangerous. People buying N95 masks when they aren’t sick, especially without a proper fitting, are dangerous. If everyone would exercise proper caution and keep a level head/not spread misinformation, this would be a lot smoother.

Agree that things like people buying up the N95 masks is increasing overall risk, not decreasing it - as is bulk purchasing/hoarding hand sanitizer or soap so that no one else can buy any.

And yes, everyone should take individual measures like covering mouth/nose, washing hands, and avoiding facial contact.

Exercising more caution when going to crowded places shouldn't be limited to those in at-risk groups, though. Checking the spread through populations at lower risk also helps reduce the spread through populations that are at higher risk. Which is why social distancing is another approach - whether it's someone's individual choice (choosing not to go to large events) or not (large events being shut down).

I am 99% confident now that games will be played without fans. Sentiment is moving way too quickly to not get there by next week.

well then basically everything in life will also be shut down including all elementary and high schools. I cant see how you can close colleges but not all schools and once that happens, days cares are closed as well. I would say the odds of the tourney not getting played at all is spiking bit time because on the dominoes fall on the panic that is it

30-million cases of the "flu" this year in the U.S....nearing 20,000 dead....PLEASE stop the hysteria that's being extrapolated by the press!!!
Why did you start a thread to get your friend back from China by the state department for a “Flu” outbreak? Funny that hysteria was ok but this is not.

Too much money to stop the tournament, and it's made for TV anyway. I just don't think there will be spectators.

I agree with you otherwise but that's where it headed. My not-so-expert prediction is that cases spike through the weekend but then start to taper off next week. Covid has been THE news story for a few days now and people are taking a lot more precautions today than even a week ago.

Rutgers shutting down all classes early for spring break, starting this Thursday and all classes after spring break through 4/3 must be available on-line. Smart move and nice use of technology.

Also, they're "encouraging" students to stay away from campus through 4/3, if possible, but aren't closing dorms/cafeterias, etc. In addition, starting March 12, Rutgers events and in-person meetings involving groups larger than 15 participants are cancelled through April 15. Guidance related to this policy will be reviewed again by April 1.

Do you think there are 6-month old kids in this area? God forbid parents don’t want to see it blow up here because the state department can’t evacuate everyone to another place. Geeze man.

Dude...stop...The entire family was STUCK in Wuhan and the President had BANNED non-government flights. So not only did my friend and his wife want to get there 6-month old out of the epicenter of the disease, they also had to get back to work, after 2 weeks abroad. My Lord man get real it was a combination of things, quite obviously, so move along.

I was reading an article in the New York Times that the NCAA is exploring their options. Thankfully cancelling the tournament does not seem to be an option and playing without fans is something they would like to avoid at all costs. It seems like increased "health stations" including providing hand sanitizers and other disinfectants to fans is something they are discussing.

cleaning wipes, face masks, antibacterial soap, surgical gloves, and hand sanitizer hard to come by. Now add alcohol to the mix.......lol

Is it totally the NCAAs call...thinking maybe local authorities can put the kibosh in things - too hard to track origins of spread.

Two things - I learned today that both Harvard and Princeton have told students to not return to the school after spring break and that classes would be held online.

And #2 and even more importantly, this would be the ultimate RUScrew - After 29 years of missing the tournament the NCAA cancels it to help us get to 30.

Yeah, I think I'll go with the most recent research on this over your opinion. Like every virus, transmission is far greater from sneezes/coughs and even close breathing, since there are orders of magnitude more viral particles in those media, as compared to what remains viable on surfaces over time (most virus particles are inactivated in hours and there are simply far less of them to begin with), so while disinfecting surfaces is still prudent, it's only going to help marginally in a large crowded event sprinkled with infected people. Which is why social distancing is really the only way out of this mess, whether voluntary (as SK has done so well) or involuntary (like China). Also, social distancing addresses both routes of infection, i.e., directly from another person and indirectly from a surface, while sanitizing does nothing for person-to-person transmission.

As I've been saying, will be surprised if they allow fans into the games, given that almost every first round location already has at least one case of coronavirus, especially since by next Tuesday we should expect to see 5000+ cases in the US. And at some point, student-athlete safety will trump everything and they might even postpone. And the regionals? Let's see what the NBA/NHL do in LA/NY now that both areas are poised to see steep accelerations in cases - they have 19/14 now and should have 500+, each by the time of the regionals. This sucks balls.

5,000+ cases by next Tuesday? We have maybe 750 confirmed cases, to date, and you expect this huge explosion this week? When it happens, you can point to this post and say oh, ye of little faith.

4725 cases as of Monday, 3/16 with 1000 cases today, so going well over 5000 cases tomorrow, Tuesday, 3/17 is a foregone conclusion. I wish had been wrong all along and this petered out. I wish we were all looking forward to playing in the tourney as a 7 seed after beating UM and WI in the tourney, but falling to MD in the semis. I wish a lot of things, but wishing doesn't help in the face of crystal clear science and the math of epidemiology, which has been obvious to me and many others for weeks.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

And in hindsight wishing was the primary policy of President Trump for the last 2 months, downplaying this pandemic all the way until today when he finally admitted, way too late in the game, that the virus was out of control and might take months to get under control. Remember that when you vote in November, but for now, we all need to pull together and execute on staying home as much as possible in order to try to reduce the transmission rate enough to get control of this epidemic without overwhelming our health care system. It's going to be a close call, given our trajectory has been very similar to Italy's, but we are getting a few day earlier start on social distancing, so maybe, just maybe we can do it.

And if you're looking for helpful info, many places to go like the CDC and NJ.Gov, but if you want regular updates on what's going on, the pinned thread on the football board is pretty decent. Stay safe!

Unfortunately this is my longest started thread ever.
I think the pinned coronavirus thread on the football board is my longest (20 pages) and I've started some pretty long weather threads for big storms (I recall some up to 15 pages). The CV thread could end up being 50+ pages, sadly.
