One of my most memorable games at RU. I remember earlier that day, I was roughhousing with one of my roommates when his ankle snapped..turns out he broke it...just months before he was supposed to go to Marines boot camp...I felt so awful but it really was a freak thing. Ended up getting it taken care of at St Peters and he was back in the stands on crutches that night. For some reason I think this game was late..was it at 9? for ESPN. I had a Law and Economics exam the next day and had to go straight from the RAC to do an all nighter at Livingston Library where I got a 90 on the exam despite having to do a total cram for that exam.


Have it queued up for the last 4 minutes or so...listen to the crowd at 39:53, 42:30 and 46:00 and 52:25.also go back to 19:50 and 33:35. All you youngins, this is what the RAC used to be like. The win over #23 Missouri kicked off the 90-91 season, the previous year almost won at #1 Missouri. This is probably one of the top 10 loudest biggest games in RAC history. Its really too bad that there was no tv for UNLV which was a year later. The SHU game from 90-91 was also nearly as loud as the one. You see the extra fans in the RAC and the students behind the bench and how wild the entire student section is..way more students we would get in and they would be put up in the 300s as well

Still have it on VHS. Stood almost the entire game. Doug Smith was very good for them. The roof nearly came off the place on Jones’ bucket. Very Very loud. WVU in ‘82 was the only game I thought was louder but very close. I loved that Wenzel opened the season with a tough game. It might have been Brett Dabbs’ first game with us.

Band sounds great at the end

The previous year at number 1 Mizzou... poor Keith Huges was abused by the refs.. Doug Smith was allowed to do whatever he wanted to him.

I believe Dabbs was out for this game with an injury. I know he battled some injuries that first year..his only year. He was a key part of that although some expected more from him.

Correct ...9 pm game...we took whatever time slot tv execs told us to take to get in espn

Dabbs didn’t play in the opener ...and earl Duncan was not even close to 100% (and not in game great shape) as he had an injury in the preseason

Tom savage returned to the floor that night ..after failing out half way through the previous season. Little did we know his career would end five game later for the same academic reasons

Daryl Smith was a glove on Doug Smith that night...even though giving a lot of size. Ranked right up there as one of the best defensive performances against an all American by a Rutgers player (mike Sherrod on Carmelo Anthony in 2002 victory over national champ cuse is neck and neck with Daryl Smith this night)

That 1990-91 Missouri team should have been better than it was. It was LOADED with talent. Smith was a stud, but ended up having a not-so-stellar NBA career. Anthony Peeler had a long, solid NBA career. Melvin Booker (father of current NBA star Devin Booker) was the 1994 Big Eight Player of the Year.

At the 42:57 mark, a young Mike Pavlichko and his father, who passed away last year.

Wow, Clark Kellogg doing color... he's just a baby here! Wow. And he had no idea that decades later we'd be joining his alma mater in the B1G. I can honestly say I never knew Clark did a Rutgers game... of course my fandom only dates back to 1995 but yeah.

He did the athantic 10 championship game as well in 1989 at the RAC

This was my first game as an undergrad, been hooked ever since. Sat right behind the bench, awesome seats for students. Hopefully this year will make some life long fans out of current students.

The difference between then and now is that then we had been a competitive team consistently for years as where now we’re finally competitive after more than a decade of being mediocre at best. Then the RAC was the place, right up there with Cameron Indoor. Now, we’re living off the past and hoping to recreate what was before in rebuilding a competitive/winning program.

I think today is just different - it will never be exactly like that again.

I think our student section is frankly awful this year. Empty seats all over the place behind the band. Only the middle section is decent (kudos to riot squad). Left section is half into it. My sense is that for whatever reason the team only has a niche following by the students. Definitely not broad based.

With no cell phones, video screens, or DJs, the fans had nothing to do but be laser focused on the court for the entire game. The band was the only other entertainment besides the game itself. Sadly times like that will never happen again in sports across the board so you may never see atmospheres like that again. People weren’t ripping out the newspaper during every timeout and getting disengaged in what was happening in front of them.

Although if we somehow can take down Wisconsin, the Maryland game will have a feel like that one (and maybe PSU A10 game) as we will likely be playing for our spot in the big dance ....

But Duncan and Hughes both scored over 30 at Missouri and had chance to tie with about 30 seconds to play but Hughes threw up a three point air ball and we lost by 5. Missouri has been #1 but I think they lost the previous weekend. That was a total shootout. Anthony Peeler played in that game but was academically ineligible for the return trip to the RAC.

That’s a bit of hyperbole. People have talked about the 2004 UConn game as an example of RAC at its peak and that was after the cushy seats were put in for example. Everyone talking about the trapezoid of terror and how loud it is but from comments like this you’d think we were playing in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Sorry, and it’s not solely because I’m becoming an old fart, but 2004 did not compare to WVU in ‘82 and Missouri in ‘90 in terms of noise. It just didn’t. You could not have a conversation with the person next to you. It was a different level. I also miss the larger presence of the pep band the HUGE Rutgers flag that was run across the court during timeouts.

I hear what you’re saying. But “castrated” is a bit strong. And I don’t know if it all has to do with the configuration of the seating area. I missed the Hinson years, started going in Battle’s junior year, and the RAC was not really a big home court advantage way back then. Hell, we played the entire A-10 Tournament at Home including the championship game in 1985 and I’ve never once heard anyone talk about those crowds. Most people probably didn’t know we hosted that 1985 game. And if you check the attendance figure back then, they weren’t great.

Agree...UConn really cant compare to the early 90s games. There was just something different back then...a voracity in the crowd

And during the Michigan game after Harper hit that 3 to go up 1 at 22-21, i felt that was the loudest moment in the RAC since UNLV

I am pretty sure that game was on a Tuesday because I remember watching it with my teammates at Boonton Lanes in my bowling league. Once I started cheering, others gathered around and starting watching. By the end everybody was cheering us on!!!!!!

Just an AMAZING atmosphere...one of the best ever.

Daryl's defense in this game was just amazing. If I'm not mistaken this was the game where he turns to Doug wags his finger and says not in my house. We were also chanting that in the student section.

Every time we talk about these teams I just have to mention Mike Jones...for my money the best non big defender we have had in 30 years...his hands were so quick. Sick!!

Thanks for posting. Was at the game and it was loud. like mentioned above, Smith’s dunk nearly blew the roof off. Used to love those chants “Daaaarrrryylll....”

This! More fans and more bunched together. Before the 118 massacre. Remember Norm Stewart in his droll voice comparing and complimenting the RAC to Norman, Oklahoma. Giggling at him saying that.

In one of the better RU games that have been forgotten is that the year before the '82 win over WVU we also beat WVU at home with a basket by Chris Neiberline at the buzzer. We knew in '82 we could beat WVU at home.

During the A10 years, the GW games, the RAC was the RAC. Gimblestad was a fun foil. Whatever happened to him?

Rashod Kent on Troy Murphy is one of my favorite defensive performances as well.

One of the interesting things about this clip that shows how the game has changed: Missouri down by 8 with 44 secs left and they bring the ball up run a slow half court set and don't immediately look for a 3 ptr. Today a 3 goes up within 10 secs. (shorter shot clock too affects it),

Also liked the commentators line at one point: "Earl Duncan enters the game. He has some bone spurs removed from his ankle over the summer so he's carrying some extra weight from the lack of activity."

1. We need to get rid of the Eisner Amper section and put real stands back there.
2. Two soft fouls called against us in that clip, somethings never change.
