Yeah, but since he lied about his name and involvement in the accident in the first place, as per the excerpt below, why should we believe that he was sober? Especially since the report also said that, "Officers noticed Simpson stumbling when entering the car as the point guard said he was trying to retrieve proof that it was Evan Manuel’s car." Also, in what police department don't they perform a breathalyzer test when someone is in an accident, lies about it and visibly stumbles? Now, we'll never know for sure, but this one stinks to high heaven of a cover-up.
Way different from JY's case, IMO - and if I'm Pike, thinking about a 2-game suspension, I might just have a chuckle and leave it at one game after hearing what happened at UM. The report also shows that the University of Michigan basketball star lied to officers about his name and whether he was driving when the vehicle crashed into a utility pole in Ann Arbor hours after Michigan’s loss to Illinois last month, according to the police report.
Officers found the senior point guard outside the vehicle that made contact with a pole and street sign on the corner of Hill Street and South Forest Avenue at 3:03 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, according to the report.
Simpson initially told officers his name was Jeff Jackson Simpson and that he was walking down South Forest Avenue when he noticed the crashed vehicle, Ann Arbor police said in the report acquired via Freedom of Information Act request.
When officers recognized him as the point guard for the Wolverines, they asked him why he lied about his name. Simpson told officers he didn’t want to be involved in the crash report.
Even without taking the breathalyzer there are a minimum of 2 misdemeanors: filing a false police report and leaving the scene of an accident.

This is all interesting reading and if the young man did commit a serious violation and it was minimized, or worse, watergated...well that’s a shame.
Should have no bearing on JY. Rutgers should follow a simple path and just do what’s right based on the facts of his situation. I don’t have all the facts nor do I have a concrete punishment in mind. Just don’t want to follow any blueprint based on what other schools do or don’t do. Just do what WE think is right for the kid and our other students and student athletes.

I think this will eliminate any arguments from RU fans about what we are up against, while arguing that RU should show more "discipline", towards student athletes.
The questions on Simpson that could be factual but not easy to confirm.
A) warde manuel is the AD, his son is a student manager and the car was his wife's car that Simpson was clearly driving.
Typically it's pretty easy to know who the car is registered to and most Athletic Departments have an auto allowance as part of their contract with the school. So Michigan clearly knows it was "their car", since in most cases, the school is paying for the use of the vehicle by the AD or wife of AD.
Since Simpson wrecked the car, my gut is telling me, it wasn't his 1st time driving this car....how many other players on the team had access to the car....?? The son of the AD is the team manager, the car was likely available to others when needed, is not an unreasonable guess.
B) while not comparing Jacob Young and Simpson, both made bad decisions, but leaving the scene of an accident at 3AM or whatever is not exactly a good thing. The comedy central item is an athlete at a high profile school, having no idea who Simpson was??.....That in itself is a lie and to me, implicates the campus police as part of the direction given by Michigan, not the other way around.
C) 1 game is fine as a suspension, but Michigan followed up with the game at RU with a home loss to Ohio State....and has Michigan State up next in Ann Arbor. My guess is another loss is coming for Michigan.
I think RU has a long way to go to become competitive in sports and there is no violation of team rules unless Simpson was truly given a breathalyzer. He can't be suspended for curfew, they just played a game...if he wasn't impaired and just had a car accident, what is the violation for...?? Being a bad driver after midnight?? Wrecking the "Michigan paid for and provided car, to the family of the AD"???

No. If we use Michigan as our guide to our suspensions.......
This does the opposite for me. We have to show there is a right and wrong. Not 2 wrongs.
The more I think about this it is a complete mess. 3:05 AM in the morning after losing to Illinois doesn't sound good at all. Michigan should be ashamed of this cover up. There should be an investigation into the police who stopped Simpson as well. This was win at all costs if I ever heard it. Simpson was Michigan's best player by far in our game last Saturday. I really want to beat Michigan now so much more than I did already. MIchigan is a very respected academic school but obviously they condone the police, the manager's son and Simpson if he is the only one who got a one day suspension. Just an hour before the Michigan plane left for NJ it was announced Simpson would be on the plane and he STARTED the game.
This will give Michigan nice cover to fire Howard at the end of the year if they feel after 1 year he isn’t their man.

Don’t want to start ANOtHeR debate. This disgusts me 10X more then the brawl between KU and KSU in the heat of the moment.
Howard is not getting fired because of this and Michigan wears the Jordan brand pin, just like all of their coaches do.
If Young sits vs Northwestern and/or Ohio State, it should be more than enough given the circumstances of the breaking team rules. If this was a pattern, then my guess would be a lengthier sit down.
In any event, it reinforces that kids make mistakes and this isn't professional sports etc.

Why are we judging JY suspension on what Juwan Howard does?

Newflash: the majority of schools in america give one game for a dui. But over here RU fans are like “rest of the season or bust!!! God forbid a 21 year old get behind the wheel at .10!!!! The horror!!!!”
I'm not advocating for a season long suspension, just more than a 1 game time out.

Years ago my best friend and I were riding our motorcycles when a 24 year old with a .11 ran a red light and killed my best friend right in front of me.
Grow up and stop excusing behavior because hes 21 and it might cost us a loss.

Forgot about that. Only the best from our former conference mates, but did Jimmy B use that as reward or punishment?
I assume the UM AD loans cars to all students on campus? Simpson wasn't getting an impermissible benefit as an athlete of course. We can count on the NCAA to get right on that.
