Jay Butler Coming Back to RU!!

Schiano said at his first meeting with RU faithful his first RU stint the most important coach on his staff is the Fitness Trainer since he's allowed to work with the players all season long all the time even once the football season is over....I'm paraphrasing
I'm happy jay will be back an intense guy the players will love and work hard to be the best they can...
Welcome back Jay Butler!

Our strength numbers under butler were great. Hes a very good strength coach. Compare his players strength numbers with parkers. And no, strength isnt talent based

I’m not here to debate with you. Your hundreds of anti-GS posts outline your argument. Whether or not anyone agrees is another story.

GS has hired 4 of 9 and likely 5 of 10 staff that he never worked with. He brought in north jersey as well as south jersey. He brought in old familiar as well as young up and comers. Nice change up.

My point is simple, your math doesn’t work. You clearly thought we could do better so you are making stuff up to prove your point. But that’s what you do!

I don't mind so much about guys who were let go from prior positions, because not every good candidate is going to have good results with every team they're on. Sometimes good guys get fired and have more success elsewhere, and sometimes good guys get hired away from another team and fail in their new spot.

Question is whether Butler's a good S&C coach or not, and I honestly don't know. He was with Schiano a long time and he trusts him, but to your point he also wasn't picked up by any other college teams for several years while in Florida.

How many head strength coaches in p5 football do you think have held head strength coach jobs at multiple p5’s? Numbers dont lie

And how'd Parker work out from tOSU powerhouse? Ash too... It's still somewhat of a crapshoot. We really have no idea if Butler is a good or bad hire (assuming he is hired) until we see the results. Who would you have hired instead? Btw, I'm not thrilled with DC hire either.

I don't care that he didn't get another P5 head job. I care that nobody outside of Schiano has EVER hired him. He wasn't even the head guy at a HS job.

Apparently Greg thought differently. Seems to me he was ok with it as long as he had a DC in place before the Dead Period ended (tomorrow?). For all we know he and Smith may have had an understanding he'd be the DC if Camp decided not to move.

I do not like the Robb Smith hire, but I'm fine with this hire. S&C Coach is about a lot more than S&C. GS needs someone he trusts implicitly in this role. He knows he can trust Kenny Parker. That is really all that matters. There is a reason all these HCs are tied at the hip to one S&C coach or another. You need complete alignment.

not making anything up. It's you who thinks everything the man does is Gold.
Gleeson and Brown are great hires.
Nunzio is a good keep but he wasn't getting fired regardless of who the new coach was.
I think his offensive side of the ball is great but sorry, I'm not impressed with his DC, LB, or strength coach hires. I just didn't want to get the band back together and basically what he has done on the defensive side of the ball minus Brown.

why not get the band back together on the defensive side of the ball? They were consistently a top 20 defense and occassionaly a top 10 defense. I'd take that. It hopefully will get better recruiting to a Big Ten school now.

As for Butler, if your only reservation is that POWER 5 schools havent offered him a job, maybe there is legit concern. But part of a S&C coach's job is to instill expectations and accountability into the program in the offseason when the coaches are'nt around. For this role, you want someone who you trust.

The last 2 hires absolutely sucked.
Not the way we hoped it would finalize.

vkj91, I have been watching this program closely since 1988. Jay Butler did an excellent job in his time. We were never pushed around due to strength or badly conditioned. All those NFL guys from Schiano, were built by Butler. When Butler left and Jeremy Cole took over you saw a major drop in our ability to be physically on par with other teams. And since Butler stayed in Tampa post the Buccaneers, my guess is wanted to give his family of 4 kids some stability for a while. IMG is no HS. It's basically a FCS school in regards to resources. We offered AC a million, he chose not to take it. That's on AC not Schiano.

I think the general point @vkj91 making is that their isn’t a lot of non-Rutgers coaching diversity on staff.
This is normal with a HC building their initial staff up with former connections. But since we rehired a RU HC it’s a lot of the same faces from the past.
Offensive side has a shocking lack of FBS/Non-RU coaching experience.

Gleeson - great hire and outside the typical “Rutgers box”. Only 1 year of P5 experience but doubt many are upset.

Hoffman - No direct GS/RU connection but a NJ HS coach with no CFB/P5 experience.

Tiquan - Former player under GS, no FBS coaching experience

Aurich - Former GS coach with no other FBS coaching experience

Nunz - no direct GS connection but was on Ash staff, no other FBS coaching experience

Kolby Smith rumored for RB coach?: Was on Ash staff, 5 years as Louisville RB coach.

While only 1 has a direct coaching connection to GS:
2 were on Ash staff (1 with no other FBS experience)
2 have completely no FBS coaching experience
1 has only RU/GS coaching experience

The only offensive hire with FBS experience (1 year) and no Rutgers/GS connection was Gleeson.

Nobody outside of Rutgers thought to hire Schiano. What other people think can often be a bad way to evaluate people.

Also, it's a strength coach. Not to undervalue what he does, but this is a bit of a commodity position.

I'm not blaming AC on Schiano, from what I was hearing I didn't think we had better than a 50% chance of ever getting him. He was offered a great package and he decided to decline. My issue with the DEFENSIVE hires is outside of Brown they are all retreads. Every HS coach I know loves Paganos, so I'm cool with bringing him back. I'm sorry but with the money Schiano demanded I'm simply nor impressed with Fraser, Butler, or Smith. They are three guys who have mostly never been hired by anyone not named Schiano or the Schiano tree. Now the argument will be, " who cares it's Schiano's D anyway" and that is exactly why I would have loaded up on young big time recruiters instead.

I love our offensive staff. I also think our next OC will come from it with both Nunz and Aurich having bright futures

I think Schiano's demand for more money in the coaches pool was to send a message to the fans and any future coach Rutgers is serious. It may not be the coaches we want, but the message was sent.

Who is killing every decision. You know what I hate about Rutgers fans? The belief that everything Schiano does is perfect. If any other coach came in here and made those three hires people would lose their mind. Especially when a guy like bob Shoop is unemployed.
