the OP doesnt give a ****, he doesnt go to games or really follow much, no skin off his back, the next hire will be some low level that he will endorse much like he endorsed Ash when he was hired...that big time alpha right there

Greg wanted a lot of guaranteed money for himself. In fact, another way to look at it is that he negotiated so hard that he did not want to be here at all.
The best coaches are picky about their owners/administrators. I dont see them wanting anything to do with Rutgers - unless they are desperate for some reason. The idea RU is going to get a top coach and hit the Rose Bowl in a few years is magical thinking.
Its not like RU is going to be in playoffs anyway. Same teams are pretty much top 12 every year. They spend millions on top of millions and their presidents, alumni, students, ADs etc are committed. Some even cheat. They love their football - RU admins dont care much. RU winning 7-9 football games a year and going to a bowl would be a miracle. Schiano could do that much. He's not Meyer or Saban, but he's not Greg Robinson (SU) either. When Greg had the talent he won. Few coaches pull miracles with ham and eggers

Greg got offered a better contract here than he did in Tennessee... a power program in the SEC and with looking to get serious with facility improvements ...
I think he has the best resume of the coacnhes that we can afford...and $4 million a year and $7.5 million for staff really should have got things started for him
He overplayed his hand here ....especially with the control and autonomy he wanted of the program. He should have known this isn’t possible anywhere given what happened at penn state. And while I’m sure a lot of those concerns come with having an AD with no football experience and not knowing who the next school president is, he knows that wasn’t going to fly here. Period.
So while I don’t know if we dodged a bullet, he asked in totality too nuch for what he has accomplished.

For all the schiano detractors has anyone considered that he got decent results without big budgets? If he actually had a budget for assistants maybe hed do even better?!
And yet he never coached a down there. Whether or not you believe the story that he left the Pats so he could take the HC job here once Ash was let go (I don't), Greg is currently unemployed.
Cali, I know you are not a Schiano fan, but I sat there yesterday at a Big Ten game and we had MAYBE 10,000 people in the stadium. We were playing a Michigan State team that is a shell of what they used to be and after five minutes I felt we had no chance. I can not believe we are worse than the Terry Shea years. Greg Schiano won, put tons of players in the NFL, got a stadium expanded to average major college size, and made every high school player in the state have interest in THEIR State University. It is all gone now. What we have is either a Board of Governors or Athletic Director or both who can not be trusted. We may still have a very very slight chance of still getting the only person who has shown he can do the job and only asked for what almost all Big Ten and Power Five schools have had for years. We are looking at least nine losses again next year with maybe 12,000 season tickets and being completely ignored by New Jersey coaches, players, and sports fans.
I have met Cali. No way is he 6 foot tall but he is a handsome man. I don’t agree with his politics but he is 100% correct. Rutgers dodged a bullet. With the exception of the 2nd half of the 2006 Louisville game the Schiano defenses were good against bad to average teams but sucked against good teams. This was on display during his tenure as the Ohio State DC.
You didn’t go to one game this year and you live in N.J. I guarantee I’ve given at least 10x what you’ve ever donated to the department.
I loved what Schiano did for us here. But that time is over and things changed. He’s an out of work coach with, right or wrong, a huge black mark on his resume. In reality, he needed Rutgers more than we need him. No one else will hire him. We will hire another coach. If we are going to give up the farm, give it to someone relevant.

I actually like the negative Rutgers press. The local (and frankly, national) news media are all a-holes of the highest order. Whenever they become apoplectic about something related to Rutgers, I feel validated that the school is probably moving on the right track.

He fired a football coach two months ago mid-season and knew full well what Greg wanted when they had that initial meeting. This was a clear case of manipulation. He never wanted greg but he was caiught between the fans and some big doners (towers etc). So he strung it out for weeks and had now tried to make it look like greg was greedy. Imagine asking for an annual salary in the bottom three of the B1G - the horror.

bottom line is Schiano turned down 6 years, more than you typically see for a contract. He overplayed his hand bigly and got rejected. It happens. Next.
Not much else needs to be said. Unfortunate it didn't work out but was never going to with Schiano's demands. That Schiano made them anyway indicates he didn't know he was overplaying his hand or that he didn't really want the job.
The list of "demands" that was published on NJ.com are reasonable. The bulk of them are for RUTGERS FOOTBALL.. and not for Greg Schiano. Do you think someone wants to fly all over the country recruiting for his own benefit? GS is saying that is how it has to be done. Like the local recruiting by helicopter... just an efficient use of the time of the head football coach. What GS was directly being paid was fair.. 7 years was fair.. 8 was a stretch but so what? The 8th year had a diminished payout should you need to boot him.
No. There was no reason to avoid hiring Schiano when Hobbs hired Ash... a BIG MISTAKE. He couldn't handle hiring Schiano now.. admitting his mistake. And then having Schiano PROVE what a big mistake he made... the millions upon millions he lost by hiring Ash. Hobbs would get no credit for getting football fixed by hiring Schiano, right? What Hobbs is missing is that he would bask in whatever success Schiano brings in. Schiano would have made everyone forget about Hobbs hiring Ash.
Hobbs blew this deal. If he won't give any control to Schiano.. or resented it.. how could he possibly attract the type of Alpha executive we need to be handling football? Who would work for him?
