2 year window, then don't lose more than you win. I believe that would make for a happy fanbase

I've said before the very latest a coach has to make a bowl game is 5 years, if not he should be fired. But it's not unrealistic to see it happen quite a bit sooner and I've given a good number of examples of teams with as poor records as we have doing it anywhere from 1-2 years to 5.

Also if GS is getting all he's asking for in terms of salary, assistant pool and expenditure on facilities I can see patience wearing thin sooner rather than later if results aren't seen. The the more you ask for and get the more fans want to see results quickly.

If by season four we are not bowling we need to start looking for another coach.
If and when it ever comes to that whatever year that is I hope the separation terms are manageable...just posted in the Morris thread about ADs not being smart about that and it's something I always rail about here...you have to plan for the possibility of things going south and not being stuck longer than you have to be.

First two years focus on building depth. Year 3 is when the clock starts ticking.

Year 4 (2023) opens
9/2 vs Northwestern
9/9 vs Temple
9/16 vs Va Tech
9/23 at Wisconsin
9/30 vs Ohio U
The rest of the schedule is @Iowa and the B1G East.

4 wins in September gets him an extension. 2 wins and the boosters who begged for him in 2019 need to explain why he should be given more time.

Greg's high water mark, imo, is 7 wins...possibly an occasional 8 and an occasional WTF season. If Rutgers wants more, the 'hunt'...I kid, I kid...will be a multiple-coach effort.

Lets clear a few things up, the kids on this team DO NOT SUCK. They are good enough to beat teams like Umass and Liberty and would make a killer FCS team.

However, we are not in the Patriot League, we are in the Big Ten and they have no chance against Power 5 teams.

This is not their fault, it is 100% on Ash. There is no way I can fault them for excepting a D1 FBS scholarship to a Power 5 school in the Big Ten. Who will say no to that with the only other offers are all FCS schools?

We do have some actual Big Ten level players but they make up the minority of this team, like a dozen out of 85, which is again on Ash. Ash was just not moving us forward from Flood, his was moonwalking the entire time he was here.

Schiano really has his work cut out for him, hopefully a lot of these FCS level players can transfer out, he can work overtime with the Transfer Portal and get some Big Ten talent to come here as freshmen. Coach up the ones that recommit themselves to get better. Schiano has turn 3 stars into NFL starters before.

It is one hell of a uphill battle, but Schiano has done it before, right here at Rutgers without the Transfer Portal. No reason to think he can't do it again, maybe faster this time due to the transfer portal.

I am not excepting a miracle. it is all about improvements and moving forward and not taking any steps back.
We don't want too many to transfer out. Remember, we can only bring in a maximum of 25, and we don't want to leave our roster short. Hopefully the "right ones " leave.

Why can't he follow Baylor's rise, give or take a year??
I don’t know if the ethics at Baylor under Matt Rhule have improved, but under no circumstances do I want us to use Baylor Athletics as a role model. Their motto has been “Win at all costs, the law don’t mean nothin’” The only worse place I know of is State Penn.

Who cares what his high water mark may or may not be, to be honest that is 100% unknown right now. Totally different conference and very different resources at Rutgers.

Here is the math:
Belichik highly values Rutgers coached players.
The NFL follows whatever Bellichik does.
RU Schiano players will be at a higher premium than ever before.
More talent heading to New Brunswick so they can be a Schiano coached player..
Schiano and Rutgers in the mix for conference championship by year four.

We will have a good idea how quick or slow the turnaround will be based on what he can do recruiting in the next month and next year. If he lands a bunch of solid lineman, we go bowling in year 2.

Year 1: 2 wins. Monmouth and Syracuse. Recruiting class has two or three 4 stars.
Year 2: 3 wins.
Year 3: 3 wins but competitive.
Year 4: 2 wins. There is always a dip in win totals from the 1st year.
Year 5: 5 wins. A break out year. We almost beat Penn State.
Year 6: 6 wins and the first bowl birth.
Year 7: 6 wins and another bowl. We don't look back, we always get 5 to 8 wins going forward.

Yes my expectations are on the low side being in this tough league and seeing the blow outs and loss record we have had over the years.

You start out okay but then get unrealistic as you show no consideration for dips in the progress. Even Big Ten elite teams have periodic off-seasons, and with mid-pack Big Ten teams, those off-seasons occur even more frequently.

That seems more realistic. Anything can happen in any given season to help or hurt our record (key injuries for us or opponents, for example). But as expectations go, I think that's pretty reasonable and accounts for the lack of depth we have to overcome.

Not sure we always get to 5 wins forever though. Because all the other Big Ten teams will also be trying to do exact the same thing which means WTF seasons will happen now and then. There are not many teams in the NCAA for whom this isn't true.

the projection is aspirational. You’re not going to aspire to having dips in your journey, even though it is likely.

Two wins by his fourth year. The roster would be almost all of his recruits. If we are not bowling by year 4 then it was huge expensive mistake to bring him back.

We are going to suck for at least 3 seasons, even if UM became our coach. The talent is awful and the entire roster needs to be rebuilt. That takes a long time.
I think we might surprise a few people next season, at least based on our record. I am confident that Guarantano will be our QB next season, with a real HC and staff running the show. Then there's our schedule, with Monmouth, Syracuse, and Temple OOC, with our crossover games being Illinois, Purdue and Nebraska.maybe 4 wins which would create a ton of optimism going into year 2.

I agree. This team is not as bad as it's played. No doubt we don't have depth, no doubt we need more talent at every position, but there are some players on that roster who can be adequate with some coaching. Ash failed at a lot of thing, but his most exceptional failure is in the inability to develop. Very few players actually got any better in the last few years. Bringing in a good staff, with a clear vision, strategy, and scheme will serve these players well.

Ash got run out of town for a better start than this.

between the more aggressive scheme on defense, kids actually knowing their assignments, better tackling, better coaching, better technique, and better fundamentals, combined with kids who are redshirting who should be able to contribute, we should see a huge bump in performance. Get some help on both lines, and we’ll be in good shape.

Hoping Art remains. Kid has turned the corner.

If Rutgers can beat Monmouth, Syracuse and Temple next year, and add a win against Illinois, Purdue or Nebraska, Schiano will have success. Even with the current talent level, each of those games is winnable.

An optimistic prediction : a 3 to 6 win season.

Purdue doesn't suck anymore. Nebraska kind of does.. but for how long? Even so Neb is still better than us at this point.

I agree especially about Art. I saw vast improvement not counting the game when he was put in late. He was firing the ball quick and accurately like a wild west gun slinger and is tough as nails.

I think Schiano can turn around the defense next year, as it is his strength and strength of the current team. Just add a DT or two, and a decent offense and we may surprise some teams.

I feel like this thread is ignoring the 800 pound gorilla in the room. Namely, will Schiano insist upon free hookers and blow for the first 1,000 fans into the stadium on game day?

If he didn't make that part of his demands, then I think he's lost his attention to detail.
