What are Realistic Goals for Greg Schiano?

Realistic goals? Forget wins and loses since that will change based on schedule and tons of other factors. Different players every year on both teams for one.

He has to be better than Ash and Flood. Recruiting classes must improve every year. We must not look completely hopeless and lost during the game. A lot more fans at games. Start making bowl games every year again. That might take 3-4 years before that starts.

No one has the patience to wait 5 years to make a bowl, regardless of how big a rebuild this may be. He needs to hit the transfer portal hard and really coach up the roster to make a bowl by year 3, if not year 2. 2020, 2021 and 2022 schedules all have 6 wins on them, if some things go our way.

The talent right now can’t beat OSU and elite teams but the talent is there to beat half of the B1G on any given day.
There are teams in lower divisions including G5 with much less talent on paper and they find ways to beat or be competitive with P5 teams.
I don’t want to hear this as an excuse. Ash used it and the team he inherited was better then it is now.
Use the portal and start coaching these kids.
3-4 wins next year
4-6 wins in year 2 with noticeable improvement
Bowling year 3 and recruiting in the 30’s

No less than that

I am going out on the limb and saying he hits the transfer portal ,and we win 5 games next year. Decent coaching and we could have beaten BC this year and MSU is not unbeatable with a little talent upgrade. Maryland too, no reason we can't beat them next year if we have a decent quarterback .

It will take three years to know whether GS II is going to work. It will depend on how successful he is in upgrading the talent on the roster by all means during that time period. I don't see us winning more than 4-5 games in any year prior to year 4. Another 2-3 win season next year would not surprise me at all.

I also don't see fans coming back in any significant way until there are clear signs of improved play. Some former season ticket holders are gone forever and the pool of potential new season ticket holders is smaller because less people overall are interested in making such a commitment. This is not specific to Rutgers but college/pro football overall.

At least at the start, itis better to measure what you see with your eyes during the game versus what the box score or standings say in the newspaper. Having a couple fluke wins doesn’t help if the team is still weak and slow. We need to see the team get stronger and faster.

Exactly for the first 6 years...the plus one win per year model 3,4.5,6,,7,8

It’s not going to be exact...but I don’t want to see us behind schedule for 2 consecutive years ...

Our results from the transfer portal haven’t been that great, which is why I’d like to see us use the transfer portal sparingly. If Flood wants to send us OL or DTs, great. Otherwise, I’d rather build organically. Do it right, no shortcuts.

I’d rather suck with freshman, than suck with transfers.

this is reasonable but vague. Goals have to be specific, achievable and measureable.

Year 1 and 2 is about recruiting, not wins and losses. You want to see Schiano bring in guys that will significantly upgrade the talent on the team.

Year 3 you want to see some improvement on the field, because even the players we have, plus the new guys, will be coached well and buying into the offensive and defensive schemes. You want to limit blow-out losses, win the games you should, and steal a couple of the toss-ups.

Year 4 and 5, Schiano is now responsible for the talent and the playbook. While his best players will still be young, we should be fully competitive and flirting with bowl eligibility.

Year 6 and beyond, this is fully Schiano's team. This is what you get with him. Like with any coach, don't expect a straight line trajectory. There will be some up years and some down years. But hopefully the trend is upward, as his recruiting continues to improve and we build from bowl eligibility to being fully competitive with the top of the league. Alternatively, he plateaus.

Wins might be the measuring stick early on, but at least be competitive if you can't win. Easier to determine if we're making up any ground. Need a quality QB to jump start the program once GS returns.

No they don't. That is just a management myth.
I've seen so many bad decisions based on goals was set before situations evolved.

This is a football team, it's pretty easy to tell if things are getting better, even if a specific win total isn't met.

we can plainly see what the situation is, every Saturday. There is some talent, but need to stock and develop more of it. Goals aren’t the be all end all, but it’s important to have some kind of baseline to see how things are progressing.

Once Schiano is hired, he will be Rutgers' coach for a looooong time. First off, he will be given 4-6 years to make a bowl game. Which he will do. And then he will win 4-6 games every year and it will be that way until he leaves on his own.

cant say for sure, but I hope he does. We throw up the football facility, and there’s no reason for him to go anywhere else in college. We’ll be giving him a lifestyle second to none, and he can stay as long as he wants. Home is home. If he gets an NFL opportunity, no one could blame him for leaving, however remote, that possibility is.

So Go Bowling by Year 3, 4 at the most or theres some issues here.

Lets clear a few things up, the kids on this team DO NOT SUCK. They are good enough to beat teams like Umass and Liberty and would make a killer FCS team.

However, we are not in the Patriot League, we are in the Big Ten and they have no chance against Power 5 teams.

This is not their fault, it is 100% on Ash. There is no way I can fault them for excepting a D1 FBS scholarship to a Power 5 school in the Big Ten. Who will say no to that with the only other offers are all FCS schools?

We do have some actual Big Ten level players but they make up the minority of this team, like a dozen out of 85, which is again on Ash. Ash was just not moving us forward from Flood, his was moonwalking the entire time he was here.

Schiano really has his work cut out for him, hopefully a lot of these FCS level players can transfer out, he can work overtime with the Transfer Portal and get some Big Ten talent to come here as freshmen. Coach up the ones that recommit themselves to get better. Schiano has turn 3 stars into NFL starters before.

It is one hell of a uphill battle, but Schiano has done it before, right here at Rutgers without the Transfer Portal. No reason to think he can't do it again, maybe faster this time due to the transfer portal.

I am not excepting a miracle. it is all about improvements and moving forward and not taking any steps back.

This idea that the transfer portal will solve problems is so overblown. It's not like shopping on Amazon.

It will help speed things both but it is just a quick fix, it is not meant for long term success. But it can help get things rolling faster than without it, short term.

So if we have a dozen big 10 level players how many will we get from the portal in the next two years?
