Jason Day looks like he is in a lot of pain, but playing thru it well. So far a very bunched up leader board with a lot of golf still to go today. Experience means a lot on this course, why I think Tiger and Phil are doing well so far.
Dustin Johnson looking good too.

For the guys off driving off the fairway, recovery still a good possibility since there is little to no rough, just find a path thru the trees.

Familiarity with the greens is huge . Rose plus 4 so far is a surprise.

I got to follow Rahm at the opening round of the Valspar last month and he is really talented all around and very long.

He could win any week on the tour imo.

1. That is the hardest question of the 5. I have no great feel this year but I will go with Bruce Koepka
2. Big fan of a new guy to break the major victory seal. For me that would be Tony Finau.
3. I don't go out to watch the Masters. Most places have no sound and people ask stupid questions when you just want to watch. Sunday I will be at a fellow Rutgers tailgate friend. Cigars, beers and very little conversation.
4. 11th hole. It's not a birdie hole and a really tough par under pressure.
5. Jack in 86 by far. Honorable mention Larry Mize.

Wow. One of the best first rounds in Masters history. So fun to watch. Big names at par and better. And no one has separated themselves.

The current cut rule at The Masters Tournament is this:


  • Following the second round, golfers with the low 50 scores, plus ties, plus any golfer within 10 strokes of the lead, advance to play the final two rounds.

Therefore, if the golfer in 51st place is 11 strokes behind the leader after 36 holes, only 50 golfers advance to play the weekend. But more than 50 make the cut when there are ties for 50th place following the second round, or when golfers outside the Top 50 are still within 10 strokes of the 36-hole leader. A golfer could be in 75th place following two rounds, but if he's no more than 10 strokes behind the leader, he (and everyone ahead of him) makes the cut.


To put it the other way around—who misses the cut at The Masters—you can state it this way:


  • Those outside the Top 50 plus ties and not within 10 of the lead miss the cut—they do not get to play the third and fourth rounds. (Keep in mind that the 10-stroke part of the equation applies only to golfers outside the Top 50. A golfer who is 15 strokes off the lead but is in, say, 48th place, makes the cut.)

The current Master's cut rule has been in effect since the 2013 edition of this major championship.

Old dudes rule!

Two different commentators said the pin placements overall today were as difficult as they could ever remember. I guess someone forgot to tell the field.

If true I'm guessing this was done because today was the only decent weather expected for the week.....good weather = tough pins, wind and rain = less difficult pins.

The only reason I have shied away from Bryson is a few episodes where I did not care for his behavior and attitude, especially toward his caddie.

I believe Spieth's issues are mostly if not all mental. I have coached multiple athletes battling very similar demons.

I'll post a picture tomorrow. Got to play with him, Bart Oats, Howard Cross at an N F L outing Westchester a year or 2 before the fatell trip.
I'm no great golfer AT ALL but I'll never forget 2 things.... 1...The acceleration of the ball off his irons and 2...I missed a 3 foot put to beat him on a par 3. We halved lol. (#CHOKE!)

Interesting comments on TGC (can't remember who) about Koepka's game possibly not being suited as much for Augusta, given that he doesn't draw the ball, which can really hurt on holes like 10, 11 and 13. Obviously, if he plays really well, like today, that probably doesn't matter, but on the whole I could see it being a problem.

Lee Trevino hated Augusta because he not only couldn't hit a draw but couldn't hit hit straight. Bruce can hit straight and hit a baby draw but it's not his favorite shot. Tiger no longer can hit a controlled draw any more either

Great call on koepka. I bought into the hype that his body change was going to hurt his gane. He even said it himself. Kudos to you.

This leaderboard if it holds till Sunday (big if) is shaping up to be a dandy. So many big names. That’s what I love about the masters. The smaller field means the big names will likely be in contention on the weekend. I can’t wait.
