Wow. Where to begin? My favorite line - "Chris Ash wanted to be the Head Coach of the Scarlet Knights."
I want to be King of the World. Unfortunately, I don't qualify.
He was DC of national championship team in P5.
He was qualified. same as Kirby Smart at UGA
Schiano had same qualifications, but better tesulre.

I would guess the other Camden and Newark count--we are close to than Pen State in numbers which I think has the most but they too have othe campuses
Never understood why those numbers are added.

Why should I (if I’m a Camden, Newark or graduate school alum) be expected to donate to the athletic program of another school? Never made sense.

Donating to school (the one you actually went to) specific things, I get. But not donating here.

The reality of it is that Liberty may even be a pick-em game next year and even UMass is not automatic. Fuxing sad...

If Liberty and Rutgers played right now, the numbers suggest Rutgers would be about a 2 point favorite on a neutral field.

What if that happens and Schiano is their Head Coach?

In the NJ.com podcast, Sarge, Politi and Kratch thought Schiano coaching UMass might be a reasonable option for him.
If Collins lands a P5 job, and he is actively looking from everything I read, would not surprise me to see Schiano land at Temple. They like their coaches that have Paterno and Penn State ties. All that nonsense that went on at Tennessee will likely not be a factor at Temple. Temple is a much better job than UMass, short of a P5 job it would probably appeal to Schiano.

If Hobbs and Barchi we’re committed they should put their money where there mouth is. Announce the next $100 million effort for facilities with the last $25 million coming from the University.

When Ash came in the door and started recruiting, we'd been to a bowl game in 9 of the prior 11 seasons. The juniors and seniors he was recruiting weren't even in 1st grade when Rutgers was last a college football doormat, and we had compiled a 83-56 record from the time they entered Kindergarten to the time Ash and staff were sitting down in their kitchens to sell them on committing (2005-2015 seasons).

Rutgers had been a solid program for essentially their entire lives prior to Ash's arrival and was coming off a down year that was impacted by several player arrests.

Now? That's all been wiped away. Four straight losing seasons... we've gone 11-37 since the current HS recruits entered 8th grade, and there's no expectation that we'll suddenly have a winning record next year.

Not sure why people try to ignore the complete mess that was left here. Has Ash done a great or even adequate job? No. But this train was already off the tracks by the time he got here due to the mismanagement previously done after Schiano left. Flood went to a couple of bowls but there was a reason the top candidates didn't even want to interview for the job here.at that time.

our state gives so little to RU, it ranks near the bottom of the 50 states and the financial support they give to their state school--if our state supported RU appropriately we would be in so much better shape and that counts for our sport programs--can some of the complainers on this board call their state rep

Michigan fired Rich Rod after 3 seasons and a 15-22 (6-18) record.
Kansas fired Charlie Weis after 3 seasons and a 6-22 (1-18) record.
Notre Dame fired Ty Willingham after 3 seasons and a 21-15 record.

It's not unprecedented to fire a coach after 3 seasons with a 7-29 (3-24) record. Question is if he'll be fired after 4 seasons and a 9-39 (3-33) record.

It is not unprecedented to be fired after 3 years. However, it is unprecedented to buy out 5 years of a contract without donors paying. The issue is the 7 year deal, which inherently gave Ash a longer timeline - which is why he demanded it. So you are not wrong, but I think you are looking at it the wrong way. I do not disagree that 7 years was a mistake. But when we look at it now, that is the world we live in.

As to your cited examples:

Michigan is not comparable. They are massively profitable, and have no subsidy to support athletics. People who want to criticize the school for not stepping up and fixing this are ill-served to point at Michigan. Which institution supports athletics more? Michigan or Rutgers? The answer is Rutgers. Which alumni support more? Michigan by a massive landslide. As an aside, the school ponied up $2.5mm to buy out Rich Rod.

Kansas paid Weiss $5.63 million to leave. This is the best analogy you have.

ND - you must be joking. Not only do they have everything Michigan has above, but that was a different world. Ty Willingham was paid his base salary of $650k for the 2 years remaining on his contract. A grand total of $1.3mm buyout for the wealthiest athletic dept in the country.

All of the above deals were 5 year deals. Like it or not, with the 7 year contract, Ash got himself on a different timeline, and now we are feeling that pain.

here is the problem...what is improvement...3-9? 4-8? 5-7?

its not clear cut and we likely will go through the same thing next November

and I disagree with you...95% of power 5 schools would have canned Ash at this point and ate the contract, schools are eating contracts all the time

I think eating contracts of this magnitude is highly unusual, especially for as much institutional support as we are throwing at athletics, and the recent track record of complete dumpster fire failures, which triggers political pressure. The story at Rutgers is NOT about Barchi or institutional support. The story at Rutgers is about the god awful donor base that has resulted from god awful decision-making at the AD level. IMHO, of course. There is no fix for this other than time.

Improvement for me? 4 wins. If Ash wins for games next year with a very young defense, and secures an uptick in recruiting, I would fully support his return. If he does not, he should be fired after next year, and I think he will. He will not survive another 1 or 2 win season. No way.

So, guess it was too much to ask for a fair and balanced letter. Anyone think that salvages any season ticket accounts? How about including a subtle hint that I, Pat Hobbs, might be a little bit at fault? Maybe when he’s Googling for the names of coaches who went from 1-11 in Year 3 to annual bowl games, he can also check for coaches who lost 11 scholarship athletes to, uh. character issues, mostly criminal, before his 23rd game.

Too bad the Chris Ash has never shown the passion for Rutgers, its traditions or the state like Hobbs. That would help the patience factor. I believe that Hobbs would die for dear old Rutgers. Ash? Three years in the books and he looks every bit the mercenary as he did when he returned to Columbus after taking the job.

same guys who want us to fire everyone and swallow the cost like the Michigans of the world-refuse to understand the fact about how bad many of our fans are in supporting the school financially and it won't help us get even half way up the latter of these other schools by not renewing , not donating and being unable to recognize why we fail--hobb's letter actually tried to address that but the malcontents can't recognize the truth

its as if the Kansas and Buffalo beatdowns didnt exist. Had RU won them and finished 3-9 with the exact same results the rest of the year, I think people would have been okay with a 4 year for Ash to prove.

Ash lots most of the fans when he lost those two games, a few here are pointing to the last 4 games as some sort of true indication of the team, yet that is not how it works

Even the most loyal of the ash fans I knew were off the bandwagon after Kansas. The buffalo beatdown was just the icing on the cake.

Also feels a little uncomfortable how he talks down the previous regime, something we know Ash did at length, as well. Not debating the state of the program prior to Hobbs/Ash but putting it on blast as a way to contexualize your own poor results is weak. “boy you shoulda seen how ****** things were when we started, we’re actually lucky to be where we are”. You’re better than that. Pat.

Are we really in a recruiting hotbed? Putting aside recruiting rankings, is the true measure of a player whether he performs up to and exceeds his ranking and makes it to the NFL? From 2017:
Looks like Florida, California, Texas and Georgia are super hotbeds, while South Carolina, Alabama, and Lousiana are hot.
New Jersey is up there but even behind Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Total numbers is on way to look at it but how about NFL players per D1a school. Bottom line is there is more than enough talent within a 3 hour drive of Rutgers to put together a consistent top 25 program.
New Jersey 47
Florida 28.1
Texas 14.1
California 28.4
Georgia 28.5

They're 1-11. 7 wins in last 36 games. Getting to bowls every year sounds pretty good to most, including me. Do that for half a decade and then worry about the next set of goals.
Getting back to bowls is a nice goal but to publicly say that is your goal is foolish. If I am recruiting against Rutgers would you not point out hey their goal is to just make it to a bowl. Our goal is to win championships. As a fan or a recruit it makes me question their dedication to winning.

Willingham signed a 6 year deal in 2001.
http://www.espn.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/1303561/willingham-accepts-6-year-deal-coach-irish

Ash's deal was 5 years, which, perhaps as you are intimating, effectively turned into a 7 year deal.

What was Weiss' Notre Dame deal?
https://www.kansascity.com/sports/college/big-12/university-of-kansas/article2282768.html

Weis received $6.6 million in severance from Notre Dame when he was fired in 2009. Tax records show he was paid around $2.1 million in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and he will continue to be paid by Notre Dame through December 2015.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2017/05/15/notre-dame-buyout-charlie-weis/101708588/

Weis was paid nearly $10.3 million by Notre Dame between 2010 and 2014. During that time, he also worked as an assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs and the University of Florida. He became the head coach at Kansas in 2011, which paid him $2.5 million per season. When he was fired by Kansas in 2014, the school owed a gross amount of $5.6 million under his contract in addition to what he was getting from Notre Dame and Play By Play Sports. After a variety of deductions Kansas actually paid Weis a total of a little more than $5.4 million.

But playing time on teams that play for championships can be very hard to get. I suppose you will come back that the best will want to compete with the best to play, But we are not in that stratosphere right now. We are competing with MAC and AAC teams, and perhaps recruits with 1-3 other P5 offers. We do get a few or more kids with a lot of P5 offers, but that is rare right now.

It wasn't a 7 year deal. It was a 5 year deal with a year-for-year provision triggered by the sanctions. Again - this is a standard provision. Absolutely anyone who would have considered the job would have insisted on the very same language.

There are some specific things in the contract to perhaps find fault with, but this isn't one of them.

BDS?

lol... you're a clown.

The pathetic part was the "year of behind the scenes wooing".

We don't need to "woo" anybody. I have zero interest in anyone who has to be talked into the job. When we're ready to hire a coach, we'll offer a deal. Nobody is being "wooed". This isn't "Bac Trying to Get a Date on a Friday Night". We don't beg.

Okay, so looking at buyouts alone, instead of years/record:

Arizona State fired Todd Graham and bought out $12.3M
UCLA fired Jim Mora and bought out $12.2M
Texas A&M fired Kevin Sumlin and bought out $10.3M
