Why would you want to hire another OSU Defensive Coordinator?
Because this one has HC, NFL, and NJ recruiting experience.
And because this one is a rockstar int NJ high schools and with NJ coaches. As they say on this board, he has stain.

Sign me up. It would be a great story where he comes home and tries to resurrect the program he built. His realistic ceiling might be 8 wins (9 in a terrific year), but he probably gets us there faster than most other coaches (not to mention that few coaches will have a higher ceiling in our division).
Schiano is the best option, can handle NJ politics, university bureaucracy, recruit NJ players better, motivate the masses, handles Defense, and is a Jersey guy more than what we had before. Why wouldn't you want him. he never said he wouldn't take it. And, he might flip last minute recruits.
Yep lets return to a guy who couldn't win the Big Least, couldn't beat West Virginia or Miami, and was by far not a game day coach. Not to mention that no other school will give him a HC job with the " what did he know about the Penn State disaster", not even the school he is currently working for. I will say it again its time to move on and hire a proven HC that isn't Greg Schiano. He couldn't win a lower conference (0 titles) what makes you think he can win in this league?
It's crazy that almost 70% of the voting wants Greg back. (I voted yes too by the way). It has never been this high in the past, and the vocal minority that don't want him, seem to be just that.
He’s the only guy that will bring me back to spending money on this program. It’s time to let the AD and Admin know that unless they do right by us and bring Greg home, those of us who support this program will turn our backs to it from a financial perspective.
I've been very outspoken in the past about not bringing Schiano back, but right now, we could use him. We aren't bringing him back to compete with Ohio State and Michigan. We're bringing him back so that we can beat the Kansas and the Buffalos. We may never be fully competitive against the super elite programs in our division, but we have to at least be able to beat the teams that we're supposed to beat. Less than that from a B1G program in a football talent-rich state like New Jersey is not acceptable. We have to stop the bleeding and return to respectability. Schiano is the most surefire choice we have for that.
What makes you think any HC Rutgers will realistically hire can win the B1G?
An 8 or 9 win plateau in this conference would be tremendous for Rutgers. And consistently winning 6 or more games to participate in Bowls year in and year out is what RU should realistically be shooting for in a stacked B1G East division.
We’re on the verge of a 1-11 season and you’re not only talking about conference titles but also saying 6-8 win seasons aren’t good enough? Have some perspective dude..

I suggest your brain digest 50 thousand fans in the stands, NFL level players all over the field, bowl games every year, and he was recently lauded as the best recruiter in the league.

There are so many threads, it is difficult to read them all. Do any of the threads answer the bizarre question? Or is it rhetorical?
Or we can roll the dice on another unknown. We’re not getting Jim Tressell or Les Miles. I have more faith in schiano than I do in the administration’s ability to make the right higher.

The problem is...many of us have zero desire to have Greg back here. But, I would rather see him here next year over this complete disaster.
Even I would prefer him over what I see now. And to be honest, I actually feel he has lowered us even further then where Flood left us. And this is with a AD that supports him fully and a President who at least supports him somewhat. A rebuild is 3 years at best to see real progress. Year 3 does not have to be a miracle turn around but where Ash may have sold us on the program being a dumpster and have no talent on day 1. Lucky to have won those 2 games in year 1. Year 2, some progress but still some huge blowouts and losing to EMU...OK, he sold us on progress, Rome wasnt built in a day. Also sold us on recruiting, how he really needed to repair the damages left by Flood. Needed to fix the player attitude, behavior, strength, etc...ok, sounds good....but hmmmmm, what is happening in recruiting? Not seeing any progress.
Now, on the cusp of year 3- the arrests(sounds familiar) and if you watch close last year, at end of year, players were taking games off and either not fighting through injury or just not giving a ****(see Indy). OK- well he sold us on that being left over from Flood and having the right leaders in the locker room. This is a Bowl team! And now this mess- recruiting is horrible, we had heard that all these kids were waiting on seeing Ash deliver on the field...Why the F hasn't Young committed? That is 100% Ash. We win 2 games at most this year and officially become the bottom dweller in P5.
How can he sell anyone again?
So, bring me Schiano and his crappy coaching- interferring with the offense, pissing off local coaches, pissing off the media and his potential of 6 wins at most.

Only if he has moved on driving away good coordinators because he was an EXTREME micromanager that absolutely held us back at times.
I can't disagree with anything you wrote, and I am on board, with a caveat or two (or three). And I appreciate civil discussion as opposed to attacks from the angry mob mentality.
1. Fishky asked a valid question- what above getting over the hump and beating the teams you are never expected to beat?--Or will baby steps suffice.
2. Should be just settle and be resigned to taking Greg back at $3-4 million year, or should we cast a wider net and see if there are any other viable candidates? I don't believe the the narrative that nobody would take the job or Greg is the only "sure" thing. There are no "sure" things when you have to play MU, MSU, PSU and tOSU every year.
3. As far as best recruiter in the league, that is easy when your badge/gear says "Ohio State". Not so easy when it says Rutgers.
I don't want to sound like I am opposed. But look at where the last knee jerk hire got us in 2012.
Is he really interested in coming back? I don't think it's possible, but I wouldn't be disappointed he did (given the current situation).

I'm one of those people who didn't want Schiano back. While I admired the job he did building the program, I also thought that after 2006 he couldn't get past his plateau of 7 regular season wins built on a weak OOC schedule and weak conference opponents.
While I admired the building job Schiano did, I thought Rutgers needed someone to get us to the next level. Unfortunately, today Rutgers doesn't need someone to get us to the next level. We need someone to repeat the building job Schiano did. And obviously Schiano has shown the ability to do it.
But I'm still concerned that if we bring back Schiano, and he replicates the building job but is still unable to get us to the next level, are we then stuck with him.
