Penn State does not want to play Pitt for games which will be shown before a National TV audience. If Pitt wins , Penn State will be so embarrassed.
It is so hard to promote the myth that "we are so great" after losing to Pitt.

Therefore, it is much easier to promote that myth by scheduling teams like Bowling Green, Villanova, Delaware, Temple, Central Michigan, etc. None of those games will be considered for a National Broadcast.

After beating Temple or Villanova, Penn State will perpetuate the myth they are the best football team in Pennsylvania.

College football fans know why Penn State does not want to play Pitt.

The game is in Pittsburgh (Heinz Field).

ABC wanted the game for their National Broadcast game which will start at 8:00 PM.

However, initially the Pittsburgh Pirates game (PNC Park) was scheduled to be played at night starting at 7:00 pm. Pitt asked the Pirate organization to move the Pirates/Marlins game time start to 1:05 PM so the Pitt/Penn State game can be the ABC National Broadcast Game at 8. The Pirates graciously accommodated the Pitt request.

North shore will be very busy with over 100,000 fans attending both events. Common Parking lots used for Heinz Field and PNC Park events.

Pitt was controlling the game for most of the first half, ironically, so it wasn't quite the blowout some think it was. I didn't see the second half so I have no idea why the wheels fell off.

What a miserable night weather wise. Penn State fans get on Pitt fans a lot for attendance issues, but I can't blame anybody that left the stadium early, rivalry be damned. Miserable weather football games should be reserved for like November.

As far as the actual gameplay, if anybody is interested, our run defense looked absolutely horrific in the first half. I am still very skeptical about our defense as a whole, but runs that should've been stopped in the backfield were going for 10 yards. Ollison gashed us. The game boiled down to Pitt shooting themselves in the foot, and us making solid second half adjustments. Really like what i'm seeing out of our offense, this is probably the best line we've had in a decade.

Final thought, Franklin is probably going to get lit up in the media and whatnot for keeping his foot on the gas the entire way, and even challenging the fumble late. Even Blackledge seemed pissy about his decisions late in the game. Perhaps rightfully so, but I personally love the attitude. Woody Hayes once was asked why he went for 2 when his team was up so much. His response was "because I couldn't go for 3."

It’s pretty clear that PSU sold out to stop the run in the 2nd half knowing that Pitt wasn’t going to throw the ball...Pitt was one dimensional and also had a lot of special teams issues...that and Pickett doesn’t look like the savior that Pitt thought he would be

Kenny is one of my favorite Pitt Panthers and IMHO he will he will be a future NFL QB.

As Abro pointed out Kenny was a 6-2 190lb Rivals 3-star (5.6) QB out of NJ.
Other NJ QB at that time may have been rated higher but his talent and potential were recognized by the Panther staff. Under the training, development and QB coaching (Watson/was QB coach for Teddy Bridgewater while at Louisville) he has developed into a 6-2 220lb QB with great QB skills. I realize he only has 3 games under his belt (VT,Miami and Albany) but you can see his talent, poise and leadership ability. Can't say enough of good things about this kid. Your hometown will be very proud of him.

Every former Penn State rival has the same argument. Syracuse, Pitt, WVU, MD, BC came up with some obscure reason as to why Penn State ended the series. The truth is that Penn State joined the Big Ten. Like it or not, that is what ended the series with these teams. Discussions between PSU and the B10 were already underway when Major Harris beat Penn State. Penn State would go on to win 4 games vs WVA after that loss before the series ultimately ended.

Everybody with a pulse (including Rutgers) beat Penn State in '88.
