There are ways...just like the secret exit out of the Purple Lot, there are ways. ;)

Please tell. I never learned the Purple Lot secret and the few times that I've tried to escape a Belt Pkwy tie-up and only resulted in further delays. Like the time I got re-directed into lower Manhattan and spent hours waiting to get to the Holland. Seeing people walking casually on the street and making 10x's the progress is maddening.

Yeah because idiots cannot distinguish between Staten Island and Long Island.

It is one thing if you are from another area but I have heard people from NJ make the error.

I have NEVER in my life heard that before. There is one problem and one only:

People from Long Island have long looked down at everyone else, ESPECIALLY New Jerseyans, and think NJ is a pit while, in fact, there’s not much difference between the two (at least from 195-North). Oh and they’re basically Met, Jet, and Islander fans so there’s that lol!

proudnj- using gang activity in a specific area as a knock on the quality of life on LI is beyond dumb--you prove you know nothing about LI and are just a prejudiced guy who generalizes without knowledge--for what reason? did LI bite you in the ***?

When you are traveling and you hear a crude loud mouth they are usually from SI.
Ok.....…. thanks for your input. And in all my 54 years on Gods earth and being a life long resident of New Jersey I have never heard anything crude from a fellow resident of New Jersey (nice line of B.S. there...RIGHT?) And lets not forget about the bird so many of us in N.J. give people while driving. Ahhh the list can get longer!

Having lived in both I am not sure how I could do that, but yeah. Also Jets yet but do not care about baseball and am a Rangers fan (to the extreme irk of people who realize I grew up on LI and in NJ).

I'm here for work, I don't get this place. Traffic all over. More highways than anywhere I've ever been. One minute I'm in an urban area (Hempstead), I cross over railroad tracks and it's like "Boom!!!" an oasis of trees and beautiful neighborhoods. In NJ there's usually a buffer zone (I'm going route 9 south in Howell, once I pass Home Depot and 195, it gets noticeably different). Here, the neighborhoods just flow into one another.

Property taxes are insane. I tell people I'm from NJ, they look at me like I have 6 heads, like NJ is on another planet. For some reason, there's a large disdain for Staten Island. Has anyone else encountered the same thing?

You nailed it. I lived in Yaphank for 6 years off ext 68 (William Floyd Pkwy). The eclectic beautiful home next to shack just drove me crazy. Moved there for work as well. Went way out east to find something that looked like south brunswick (home town) back in the day. Go north off expressway and beautiful..head south , cross the tracks and you're in Shirley....where the Pathmark was...yikes. But if you continued on you'd hit the Ocean (right where that flight to Paris went down and they have a memorial (I think). Used to have F-14's overhead flying out of Grumman.

Going out to the east end via North Fork..fabulous ride. Wineries, potato farms, historic towns. Orient Pt. Ferry to New London, Ct. was awesome. Cross over thru Shelter Island by ferry to south fork and come back thru the Hamptons....long but fantastic day trip. Jello shots at Tequila Flats.

Dated my wife for 4 of those years and we'd alternate the weekend trip out or back to central NJ. Leave 9pm on Friday and return 4am on Monday morning. Only way to do it. As long as you can stay out there it is really nice. I kinda miss it. My son was actually born 3 weeks before we moved back to NJ at Stony Brook...so I tell him he's a New Yorker lol.

I will also say I met some of the best people I have ever known out there.Haven't been back in 25 years..want to but sounds like nothing has changed. But it was a hoot....

Have spent a few long weekends in Southampton, exploring the East End of LI. Particularly liked Montauk and the beautiful beaches and scenery, in general out there. Lots of great restaurants in the area and yeah, parking in any of the towns just sucks and yeah, getting to and from LI just sucks. If I lived on LI, I'd either never leave or only travel after 10 pm, lol.

The problem with LI is that you have to go through NYC. Before Robert Moses was minimized/pushed out, 2 long island sound crossings were proposed that never came to fruituon. They would have helped greatly in alleviating traffic

Nice how the link mentions “The Power Broker” by Robert Caro which is the definitive biography on Robert Moses.

I suggest you all read it if you get the chance.

Moses had some great ideas. But it’s also good not all of them were implemented.

Long island and New Jersey have one connection. A strong disdain for Staten island.
I think its the chip on the shoulder of Staten Islanders. They know they are the forgotten borough.. the "least" of NYC.

I think if they were part of New Jersey originally.. as they should have been.. it would be very different.

Instead of being the bottom of the barrel in NYC they'd be a powerful county in New Jersey. They have half a million pop now.. middle of the road for a NJ county.. my guess is if they were NJ it would be more.

Another thing that would have been different is if there was a subway line connection. SI to Manhattan might still be too far but one from SI to Brooklyn might have helped with the “connection” thing.

I have to go to Melville for a meeting next week from Morris county. Best times of day to travel to and fro? (Other than 2am)

I commute to Melville every day from Summit. I've tried everything for over a year and this is what works for me:
5:45 am leave home, get to the GWB by 6:20, Cross Bronx to Throgs Neck Bridge, Cross Island to LIE to Melville. I usually arrive between 7:10 and 7:20. We've got a nice gym in our building so I workout, shower and I'm at my desk by 8:30. Some days it doesn't work that way, most do. Friday mornings and Jewish Holidays are the best.
Now, going home is a whole nother story! Most days I work until 7 pm and do the same route in reverse. Most of the time, I'll hit the GWB at 8 pm and get home by 8:30. I've left work at different times in the afternoon and it can be miss, hit or miss, miss. I've left at 3 pm thinking it was early enough but it took me 2.5 hours.
Fridays: Great for the morning trip. Horrendous for the afternoon. Yesterday I left at 12 pm and it took me 2.5 hours due to mid day construction. Sometimes I wait until 7 pm to leave.
I listen to a lot of Podcasts, sleep over in a hotel Wednesday night and drink lots of diet coke in the car. Speaking of car.... The main traffic problem is the sheer volume of trucks on the road. If it was just cars traffic would move more efficiently and safer. Trucks suck! After testing the ride before taking this job I realized I had to prioritize safety over fuel efficiency. I bought a Ford Explorer to drive the 130 miles round trip.

There is talk of reviving the idea. Of course people are bitching. The ones who are bitching about it are the ones who don't leave the island. Employment wise without the crossings you are stuck. You can only work on li or NYC.

Why don’t you take train from Penn to Huntington? Wouldn’t that be like a consistent 1:45-2 hr commute?

Did a similar commute for two years. Hoboken to Oyster Bay and Hoboken to Oceanside. Getting out there wasn’t a problem, but the afternoon was brutal. My ex wife refused to move out there, so I drove to Oyster Bay (LIRR from Penn to O’side was 27 minutes - easy commute).

She hated LI and found the people to be rude. I loved the Island and found the people to be fairly nice and personable.

Have a colleague that commutes from Smithtown to JC. That’s hell on earth.

Any way for you to take the train and uber to & from your office?

I park in Summit and take the train to NYC and then on to Manhasset. Takes a while but it's consistent (barring delays). Thanks to mobile internet I can get work done on the train and spend less time at the office, so I can have some semblance of a life.

Driving takes less time but depreciates your car rapidly and generally drives a person insane. Doesn't get much worse than driving in any NYC borough.

Amongst all of the political indoctrination Rutgers attempted in Expos... I learned that Moses was an evil racist who intentionally kept highway overpasses in Long Island low enough to prevent city buses from reaching the beaches.
