Please wake up. Stop talking about first year, because this is his fourth recruiting year, and he is still trying to recruit the Midwest and Georgia, despite having very little to show for his efforts in year 1-3. Everyone understands that you stick with what you know in year 1. I’m registering the concern because he seems hell bent on repeating the same mistakes he’s previously made, in year 4. You’d think he’d have learned his lesson by now, that it’s not such a good idea to recruit against Midwest programs on their turf. He had three years to show tangible results, it didn’t work out, it’s time to move on.

IMO, he would show a better return on investment if he recruited Florida instead of the Midwest and Georgia. No one has a problem with him recruiting NY, NJ, and Pa.
Get off this year 4 nonsense already. 2016 was a burn year. He had a month to try to put a class together. Even 2017 he was at a disadvantage to established coaching staffs which had been developing relationships with kids for a couple of years already. Now they're on kids that are freshmen and sophomores; hell, they offered an eighth grader last week. These things take time.

Another thing, anyone who thinks he was winning more than two games in 16 with the roster he inherited- 55 recruited scholarship players- is not living in the real world. 55 scholarship athletes in the Big Ten East. Utter nonsense.

Didn’t someone post a few days ago a table showing Florida with either most or second most offers? Both Florida and NJ were more than 30.

Ash hasn't done anything since he's been here. We will see this year .but again, I don't understand the dogmatic loyalty to the guy from some of you, it's delusional.

We all hope he succeeds and does well, but no, another bad year and we won't just keep thinking he's such a great HC. He has no resume I don't understand the conviction some have that he's such a good HC.

P.S. yes, I know he's "changed the culture" huge steps huge steps. "The hunt" instead of "chop" and the forgettable uniforms has been HUGE for the program I know. But aside from those power moves I mean.

I believe the jury is still out with most of us on his HC abilities. But, his main focus was no different then Gregs’s when he started, fix the program first. I think most would say he has done a good job at that...

I would love to see how this board (or whatever board back then) was towards Schiano in HIS 3rd, 4th years.

I dunno if it’s ‘dogmatic loyalty’ or just wondering why some guys gave the guy who ran the program into the ground every benefit of the doubt while completely trashing Ash from the word ‘go’ without any sense of context whatsoever. I’m not saying he’s going to be Schiano but sometimes I wonder what fans around my age (38) and older who are burying Ash were doing during Schiano’s first few years when we were getting blown out by 1-11 MAC squads that Terry Shea’s teams beat 59-0. Why do people act like some of the mistakes Ash has made as a 1st-time HC are these unbelievable ‘sins’ that no one else in the history of coaching has done? Why do people act like Schiano put it all together in a matter of weeks? Does anyone else actually remember the fake punt vs UConn in 2001? How about the punt block that left the ballhawks uncovered vs WVU in 2003? How about hiring a DC that was recruiting for Virginia from the Rutgers offices? How about Cubit vs. Schwenk? Why did people refuse to recognize Ash was left with a starting QB who couldn’t crack 3rd string at a run-happy G5 school?

They wouldn’t be able to view it in its original context. People seem to think that Schiano was hired, then we gave Miami a scare, then beat cuse 24-7, beat MSU then went to the Insight Bowl with literately nothing happening in between these events.

I don't want to hear about bum years. We paid him 2M+ for 2016, he didn't work for free. No one forced him to stay at Ohio State but he felt he needed to fulfill that commitment. Fair enough. There are no mulligans or freebies.

He is accountable for 2016 results, but at the same time, he gets 5 years to turn this thing around.

[pfftt]Al, for the umteenth time. Give it up and stop the bs. It is clearly evident you are not an Ash fan. In addition your ideas as to how to run the program is becoming ridiculous. In reality most of us do not have all of the answers or all of the information needed to make some of the difficult decisions and the in and outs of Rutgers itself. So please try to be like most and relax for a change. And recall as some have nicely pointed out that Greg's first 3 years were nothing stellar.

Enough is enough!!! :chairshot:

He's had TWO, and you're all over the place. First, you're bitching about vision, then about recruiting, then about on field results with 55 scholarship players and now his salary.
Next you're going to be protesting with Mark Killingsworth about the cost of athletics?

sent offers means nothing if you don't have boots on the ground to support. there have been reports that our coaches have recently been recruiting the midwest. i haven't read similar reports about our coaches visiting Florida. lots of offers are sent, but we can only accept 25 max.

Didn’t realize our coaches weren’t allowed to recruit in the Midwest.

i'm addressing issues as they come up in this thread.

Two seasons, three recruiting classes which can be evaluated. He's not the King, his customers are free to critique his results.

the on field results in year 1 was more due to a poor hire at OC and an offensive system which wasn't a fit for the players onhand. Thankfully, he's made a very strong hire for OC in year 3 and things are looking up.

Nonsense. The guy is getting paid $2M + to produce results and he isn't producing results, I'd like to see. Criticism goes with the territory. If he were showing recruiting results, I'd have nothing to say. But he isn't, so he is fair game.

Furthermore, the fact that many of the top 10 in NJ don't appear to be considering Rutgers, has me concerned. Why aren't Top 10 Jersey Recruits visiting Rutgers unofficially?

There was a steady stream of progress in Gregs recruiting and I could see tangible results.
Academics improved and people were no longer getting kicked out of school because they failed out. The block R and other marketing endeavors increased awareness of the brand.

I'm not seeing the same thing here. you don't need to know how to run the program to see that the product is crappy. I just have modest aims here. Start with a vision that recruits will find compelling, Recruit the heck out of NJ, supplement with talent from surrounding states and Florida.

After 3 years and 500+ post thread, there is finally a tweet from Chris Ash that I would consider to be a vision. Be The Best We can Be Here. I now feel a sense of direction and purpose for the program. I'll take it. It's so important to include the keyword "Best" in our messaging because THIS is what elite recruits want to hear. It's the first time I've hear Chris Ash use the word best.

Whether we become the best isn't the point, its the desire to be the best which is most important, and that is the message that needs to be communicated.

Let's leave out the stuff that happened between 2012 and 2015 on why top recruits like Barkley and the rest are not considering Rutgers. Any coach with a half of a brain would've taken full advantage of Penn State's situation at that time. But of course someway, somehow Rutgers became worse and PSU got better and the national perception on both sides BLEW UP.

But that's Ash's fault lol. It was going to take anyone more than a year to clean up this mess. Two years at the most. Should be some progress this year.

It doesn't take more than three years to start to recruit better. Jeez these kids were freshmen when Flood left. I feel that this summer we will have a big uptick in recruiting. But if we don't, its on Ash, not Flood.

Stop being a broken fan and making excuses.

Lots of people say this, but who else got better players during that PSU situation? Regional schools like Pitt, WVU, temple, BC didn’t get better players all of a sudden, recruits didn’t seem to mind going there

Wait a minute. You said WV, Temple, Pitt didnt get the players that could've helped Rutgers during the Flood years? They just started going there when Ash became coach?

No what I’m saying is those fanbases also complain that they didn’t “take advantage” of the PSU situation, so it’s not just an RU thing

If you want to blame anyone for 2012-2016, you have to blame the President who did not want Rutgers spending good money to hire a good coach. Had we hired Mario Cristobal, who was offered the job, at the very least, we would
Have had a strong talent base, because he is an exceptional recruiter. Nevertheless, I respect the job Flood did, in spite of his foibles, because I think he did his best. It’s ironic that you mention Barkley, because Flood got Barkley to commit before he reneged. Today, we’re having great difficulty getting the Barkley caliber recruits to even visit.

Ash should not be held accountable for things he can’t control. But any remaining messes should be cleaned up by now. First two years, Coach got a mulligan. This year, we need to see progress.

Progress in wins or competitiveness on the field? If it is the former I fear you might be disappointed, if it is the latter I fully expect marked improvement this year. I expect 3-5 wins, but a more competitive team against the conference leaders. 2019 is when I believe the wins will likely improve significantly. It is a process and fans need to be patient.

Arguing either side is fairly silly at this juncture. I lean slightly negative since Ash has not demonstrated the ability to run a functional offense and is not making up for it in recruiting. However, I look at the past few NFL drafts, the RU pro days, Laviano and Rettig struggling to make 3rd string at G5 schools and say maybe there is hope.

Ash's legacy will be determined by Sitkowski, Lewis, Chatman, Blackshear, Clark, etc. Not Chris Laviano and Gio Rescigno.

Implication - Ash is not doing his best
Therefore, I do not respect him

I don't know if it was so much the President as the administration. Don't forget, Drunky Dick McCormick was on his way out when Schiano left, so I don't know how much sway he had at that point. And someone recently noted that certain people in the administration back then were very resistant to paying anything close to the going rate for an experienced P5 head coach. I think the low salary being offered is what kept interest down in the position and also led to Christobal blaming his wife for not taking the job.
