I took a job a few months ago in East Hanover and we're looking at towns in the area to move to.

Any thoughts on Randolph? Anyone have insight in the culture/vibe of the community? Seems to have a good school system and reasonably priced houses.

Lived there 15-17 years ago, and we liked it a lot. We lived on the border of Mendham. Too long ago to remember the culture/vibe of the community.

Do communities even have a culture/vibe any more? Our town in Monmouth County has 0 culture/vibe. Not sure if it is our particular town full of investment banking types, or if that is the way things are nowadays with everyone staying in there house and interacting on social media and message boards. We found that the people in Belmar and South Monmouth area to be more friendly and outgoing than our current location.

It was honestly a delicate way of asking if it was a racist or red neck type town. And towns can have their own vibe. Ask people in Rahway / Linden about Clarks vibe.

I would also look at Livingston and Summit, which are also great towns in the vicinity. I particularly like Summits town center.

lol i went to high school in Clark, it's true. Think it's more diverse now since I went there.

I wouldn't call Randolph a college town,but the County College of Morris is pretty big and has a fair amount of things to do . I used to go to their planetarium years ago. Their high school football used to be one of the best in the state,but those things run in cycles and I don't think they are at the level they used to be. You are very close to Lake Hopatcong,many state parks,lakes,hiking ,ice skating rinks, and not too far from skiing at Mountain Creek in Vernon and a minor league baseball team in Augusta. Also,there are TONS of things to do in Morristown which also is nearby--more colleges,New Jersey Shakespeare Festival (Madison) and other theaters,the Morris Museum,historical sites,arboretums and the Community Theatre has pretty big names for concerts.The Jets train in Florham Park.Lots of shopping on Route 10 and the Rockaway Townsquare.If you like Spanish food, Dover is also nearby.

That whole area, Motown and adjoining is nice and has a nice vibe. Good schools and know people that live and grew up there and liked it. My only pet peeve would be traffic.

Lots of good restaurants and things to do in Morristown.

Denville. Nice little downtown area. Great little lake communities all around town. Good schools

I lived in Randolph from 1994-2010 and loved it. I raised my two kids there. There are awesome sports programs, both township programs and high school. If you're looking to buy there, you want to be on the South side of Route 10...the housing values will hold up better there. The North side of 10 is where the apartment complexes are and some people think that the schools are more desirable on the South side of 10. The sports programs are very competitive as are the parents. There is no town center and some people don't like that. Every kid gets bused to school. You need to get in a car to go everywhere. Traffic is bad on Route 10 so check your commute before making a decision. If you have any questions let me know.

@RU Cheese just moved to Randolph. At the time the guy was able to afford nearly any listing and settled in Randolph. Sure he has plenty to add.

what part of east hanover? Big Snack Company, Pharma , or somebody else?

I live there now. 40 minute drive to RU from almost any part of town. Good services like most towns and easy commutes all over as long as you avoid any commuting on rt 10 to the west of 202. You want to be on the south side and preferably Shongum area to have the easiest commute to East Hanover. Anything you can do to avoid rt. 10 in either the am or pm will greatly improve your commuting time.

Solid town. I worked on Route 10 in Parsippany for a decade and had a lot of work colleagues that lived in Randolph. Great county, good local services, overall a great place for a family. Just one potential negative - don't underestimate the rush hour traffic on Route 10 (east bound in the morning and west bound in the evening). I-80 and I-287 has you boxed in a bit, so alt routes are tricky to find.

Randolph is 84% white (based on 2010 census), but with a significantly growing Asian population. That trend will likely continue. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Randolph is fine. Just know that 10 east in the morning sucks. Try it out for yourself before buying.

Yeah my company is on rt 10. Hopefully side roads are an option.

Pharma. Used to work in Rahway. Then was home based for two years for a small company and now I'm in east hanover.

OP I highly recommend looking at New Providence I love it here. Not to far from you excellent schools and your house will never lose its value and only go up. Me and my family are Hispanic. The town is predominately white but very welcoming to all.

I moved to Randolph a couple years ago. A friend of mine used to live here and recommended it. He moved once he got fired from his job at Bloomingdales in NYC, but his only complaints were taking NJ Transit into the city and Randolph's lack of an active, vibrant gay community.

I personally love randolph though.

I'm in New Providence also. Great town, friendly with excellent schools. Easy commute to East Hanover.

It's been a long time but I used to take Sussex Tpke into Morris Plains make a few turns then take Morris Ave/Columbia Tpke to Ridgedale Ave.

Great town. Great sports and schools. If you want a bit more rural with as good and maybe better schools look at long valley. I raised my three kids there and we love it. You will get more house for the money. Will add 20 minutes to your commute depending on traffic during rush hours. Good luck.

^ pretty much sums it up. A lot of my friends there complain there is little to do restaurant-wise in the area. You should also look at Livingston which is on the other side of East Hanover. Schools are top-notch, more in the middle of things to do, but the housing prices will be more. Two good options there.

One other thing..IF your a Jets Fan their training camp very close by. Also, go check out the Florham Park Shop Rite for your Lo Bro. Very Unique store.

My old roommate moved out to the Randolph a few years ago. Told me there is a huge underground swingers scene out there. Lotta key parties and the such. Not sure if OP is into that.

Any truth to that?

Summit is a terrible choice for OP. Morris county's taxes are much better than Union. Plus you'll be paying up for the train line that you are not using.
