- several posters who seem to have done their homework are stating that Stevie B was NOT eligible to particpate

- one guy who has started posting a lot, recently, and never seems to be right about anything is making it his job to tell everybody they're wrong and Stevie is right

...this could get interesting!

(BTW - don't you have to let the school know you're coming for one of these? Something doesn't sound right here IMHO)
Several poster failed at homework. Stop the spin. Poor job by the staff. BTW, read what SB wrote. The staff isn't right here.

Unless the NFL has changed it's rules then this is incorrect. Holy Spirit (NJ) alum William Green was a 1st round draft pick in 2002 and played 4 years for the Cleveland Browns. He attempted a comeback in 2008 and participated at his alma mater Boston College's pro day that year.
Yes, I see that too. It's mentioned in this article about former UNH quarterback Ricky Santos, who was denied the opportunity to participate in the same pro day BY THE NFL.

Again, what possible motive or reason would Rutgers have to not allow Steve to participate? The NFL sets the rules- this is without question. In what world would anyone at the Rutgers Athletic Department think to themselves that this would be a good idea?

Does anyone know if he registered before hand? I'm pretty sure you have to register for these pro days you can't just show up and expect to participate.

The hell he didn't. He finalized the deal.
right now we have equal people pissed at Hobbs as well as Ash.. good thing this is the off season.
Someone, like the head COACH CHRIS ASH,needs to make it clear what happened here either way..

this past season no one was allowed on the sidelines starting from 20 minutes before kick off...unless you were very VIP i.e. the Garuttis. They also allow current NFL players on the sidelines. Letter winners are now up in the recruiting lounge and on the recruiting lounge deck during the games.

per our good friend @huskersalways keeping extra people off of the sidelines is a B1G thing.

Interesting thanks for the info. So it's not a "former players" thing, per say, it's a "if you'r eNOT in the NFL or a VIP" thing.

I'm not spinning ****. I'm basing my comments off of what I am reading here and I "read" what SB wrote. So? Sounds like he showed up out of the blue and is pissed because he wasn't allowed to participate. Okay.

My understanding is you can only participate in the combine or a Pro Day if you are draft eligible. If you are a UFA and get cut or hurt before camp, you are eligible for the following years draft. SB was drafted years ago and in camp, not draftable, not eligible.

Something doesn't add up. Ever since Ash has been here he has had open arms for our alums. I'm going to guess that Steve had zero contact with the staff or athletic department to notify them that he was attending.

Its not till Friday, what do people mean by he just showed up?

That's how I'm seeing it. I get the feeling that Steve showed up without contacting the staff or anyone connected to the pro day to notify them that he was going to attend.

by what rules, the NFL? Im sure Steve has a degree and is smart enough to know hes not getting drafted again.Clearly he wanted to work out in front of scouts to be seen.
Also I heard football letter winners from past are no longer allowed on sidelines during game..is this true?

Did you read the article? It actually proved you wrong. Ricky Santos was not allowed to participate because he didn't go to school there and didn't live within 30 miles of the campus. However, former NFL player William Greene did participate. Green was drafted in 2002 and participated at the BC Pro Day in 2008. So the article you posted just proved your point incorrect.

He showed up to a Pro Day that didn't happen yet? I'm sure he just showed up in shorts an and a tank top like Willie Mays Hayes in Major League without notifying anybody. C'mon.

No I'm asking if anyone knows of there is a deadline for guys who are out of school to have to register by. If there is and he didn't meet that deadline and he just showed up at the school thinking he would just be able to register out of the blue.

see my post and that of @huskersalways above. this past season Athletics began enforcing a rule that no one was allowed on the sidelines during the game. Starting 20 minutes before kick off they start shooing people off the field. Letter winners are now in the recruiting lounge and deck for the games. it's the rare VIP: Garruttis and NFL players for example, that are allowed to stay on the field during the game.

okay thanks Meg,I heard from past letterwinners that they were told no longer on the field when Ash took over and were instructed to sit together elsewhere but no longer standing on sidelines or passes given any longer.

I am not sure about passes but we have multiple letter winners at our tailgates and they all watch from the recruiting lounge.

It makes sense the B1G traditionally has aversion to players on the sidelines. A top conference with top teams and top rivalries. Imagine the clutercluck on Michigan vs OSU days. You could have a lot of extras on sidelines. You could probably get a lot of old players at pro days too. If OSU has 14 guys (2016) going to combine who needs a bunch of extra guys from 1-5 years out?

I found this article. There's no official rule preventing Steve from working out at Pro Day. Rutgers messed up.

This should NOT happen. AT ALL.

I don't care what the rules are, im not giving RU a pass here. Theres absolutely no excuse as to why they should have allowed a friggin Rutgers legend to leave the campus feeling THIS disrespected and hurt regardless of what the situation was. The communication can't be this bad.

That being said, this is another reason why I cant stand social media sometimes. Im willing to bet that if Steve took a few hours to cool off he wouldnt have gone ahead and publicly attacked the entire program like this. Once you hit that "send" button its too late. If you're angry, write in a journal.

.

It happened with Devraun Thompson too. I think when you have a lot of players every year stuff is going to happen sometimes. Seeing your image in ads can make things worse if you're feeling alienated

I just don't know why everyone automatically assumes that he did something wrong and that there's no chance Rutgers just told him to kick rocks. I actually wouldn't put that past Rutgers. Also, I posted several situations of former players, even ones who have been out of the league and/or drafted participating at Pro Days. So there's no rule. Now people are saying he didn't register. There's zero evidence of any registration or deadline he missed. Maybe he handled it wrong by putting it on social media but maybe Rutgers handled the situation wrong too.

I mentioned the deadline. I never said he missed it i was simply asking if anyone knew if you had to register for the pro day and if you do if Steve registered on time. No one is saying he didn't register.

Not sure why passes would be given out to past letter winners unless you were a VIP. That list could get pretty long if all the former players started expecting free passes. The sidelines could get pretty crowded too.

The Hale Center used to be open for a few hours before a game, NOW? NOPE ! Another moronic move by the RU Athletic Dept or however made that decision. But raise prices and move conference games to Yankee Stadium.... Yeah, the suckers will really love that .
This is something I've said in the past also. I had an extra ticket one game, and wanted to take the new hopefully Rutgers fan to the Hale Center to show him the board with who played on what NFL teams, and all the memorabilia in there. Missed opportunity for me to brag about the program to him.

Pro Days are governed by rules by both the NFL (dealing with draft eligible players and they mostly do with distance a player can travel to attend one) and the schools that are hosting them. Schiano was very welcoming on his policy and Flood followed this policy. My best guess is that Ash's has a different policy. I don't think Steve B is being singled out, but he should have not driven to the Pro Day without speaking to someone first. The scouts are really there to see certain players that are on the radar screen for the draft or for free agent contracts and maybe one or two guys can find their way onto someone's list because they are freak athletes. I think you also want to remember that Ash is also in conversations with scouts who might be offering what they want to see and don't want to see. It is very appealing that when you are out of football and you still hold your NFL dream that performing in front of NFL scouts is only going to happen at an event like this. So I get Steve B's frustration, but I can also see why Ash would want to try to limit the participants in order to be more scout friendly.

I have heard Ash talk about keeping alums in the fold, so not sure that's the problem here. We have seen other alums around the program.

The dumbest thing a coach can do is come in and cut off the alums.
NO, No, No, that's the 2nd dumbest, the first dumbest was hiring that kid for the OC job
and handing him the reins.

This seems plausible and - while not necessarily the smartest policy - isn't completely unreasonable. While it's not going to cultivate relationships with former player alumni, there are of course other considerations when shaping the rules.

I understand Steve's frustration here, but his reaction is way out of line and takes for granted all of the things RU has provided in the past, including his scholarship and previous access to pro-days and guidance that I imagine helped prepare him to play several seasons in the NFL. I'm certainly not saying RU doesn't shoulder some blame or shouldn't look closer at this policy, but Steve's reaction doesn't help either party.

So no one wants to talk about the fact this guy was drafted 4 years ago, cut multiple times and has been out of the NFL for 2 years? Great player here but he needs to move on, find a real job and stop acting like the world and RU owes him something. He made NFL $ for two years. $500 says he didn't donate a nickle to athletics.

Re: bolded part.....
Assuming what was posted up thread is correct, he didn't drive to the actual Pro Day event because....it hasn't happened yet. It's still coming up in another 3 days. What he may have done was to be proactive and drive down to talk with the Football staff or Athletics about signing up/registering for the upcoming Pro Day (assuming that such an event requires registration and perhaps has a deadline associated with said registration) rather than just calling on the phone to get registered (which may not even be an option). If it is either required to be done in-person or he thought showing his face would be a good idea to do it in-person, then he drove the 45 min down to campus. And apparently he was turned away at some point based on possible NFL rules (or interpretation of same) that may govern such upcoming Pro Day participation.

Now we wait for Rutgers' response, if one is forthcoming.

Passes are not just given out to letter winners. After a certain amount of years out of school, you have to purchase a ticket. And if the ex player wants to be on the sideline or I guess maybe the lounge now, you pay a yearly fee. Though, the staff will still invite ex players for individual games at times.
With that said, I don't know the pro day rules but this staff has been welcoming to past players. Where is everyone getting this crap from?
