Mehringer is a prodigy. Hopefully not a big loss...

Don't underestimate his ability to connect with recruits. Despite a dreadful year offensively, his younth and enthusiasm I thought was refreshing. Wouldn't doubt he taught the coaches how to post gifs on twitter.

I am not impressed by his recruiting prowess. We lost both our RB prospects within 1 month. He couldn't convince even one of them to stay and be the only RB recruit in this class.

I would have given him another year to see what he could do before getting concerned about his epic lack of results this season with what he had, but there is nothing now that will make me concerned about him leaving.

Gio had a rushing TD on his first play of game 2, and didn't see the field again until game 7. I wish him luck, but enthusiasm and a quick twitter finger alone does not cut it.

That was against Howard. Ryan Hart could've scored on that play.

Not sure how it's a "spin." He was OC at Rutgers. He's now Passing Offense Coordinator, aka "Co-OC," at freakin' Texas. Fact. Don't know how you turn THAT into what you did. It's not like we were some kind of offensive juggernaut, let alone college football one, prior to him coming here. The move makes sense, for him, to me. Your comment just seemed really odd and, to be honest, 100% unnecessary to me. Oh well.
So the running back coach might be called the Running game coordinator and be the co:OC
Maybe he's really the QB /WR coach with a fancy title
Sorry wrong about that:
Stirling Gilbert is listed as OC/QB
The running back coach is Anthony Johnson and only listed as that.
But Matt Mattox is listed as OL/Running game coordinator.
Drew might not be a WR coach there because that position is filled by Charlie Williams.
Mehringer isn't listed yet, so he might become a co:OC, but the way you put it has him as one without it being announced.
Sounds more like a spin to me at this point of Mehringer being hired and my spin is he's getting a fancy title by his mentor in order to save face because he cut and run from a position he wasn't ready to handle.

This isn't a lateral move or chance to go to a better program , it's leaving a job that you weren't ready for and think staying where you are will hurt your career.
That's on Ash for hiring someone not ready for prime time in a prime time position.
Ash gets credit for trying and every HC makes mistakes, from time to time, when hiring assistants based on potential.
Now Ash has to make up for it by hiring an OC up to making RU's O work.
It's up to Hobbs to make sure the moneys there to hire the type of OC that will help Ash make this program a winner

Edit: was informed in a post below that these Texas coaches are Strong's hires , nit Herman's.
Si my implying they will be coaching Texas in 2017 could be wrong and the OC Gilbert is said to be following Strong to USF
But still will say passing game coordinator might be a fancy title and that doesn't mean Mehringer will be the OC or co:OC.,.
But will admit it might be a possibility and no one can say defiantly it will happen .
Mehringer is supported to be passing coordinator /WR coach and if he winds up co:OC
I think that title would be a face saving gesture by Herman for Drew.
Just like Flood was made a co:OC under Schiano , Mehringer would be one in name only to pad his resume and earn more pay.
Drew was over his head and Ash probably agreed it was best for him to cut and run back to his mentor who had a good opinion of him and didn't really need him as an OC but could teach him how to handle the job.

Does an awful job and flees. Nice! So loyal to Ash who gave him the biggest break of all time. I would have rather Ash demote him as he did seem like a good recruiter but don't let the door hit him on the way out.

Bad hire from day one. Lot of people on this board have some significant apologizing to do and crow to eat.

Hope Ash brings someone with real D1 experience, ala, The Fridge.
I'll bet that's not the full picture. Ash has a relationship with Herman also. I would bet that they collaborated on this move to help Mehringer save some face. For public perception purposes, Mehringer leaving on his own saves face and keeps him viable as an OC at some point down the road.

You do realize Charlie Strong's staff is still listed on the Texas website. ESPN is reporting that Sterlin Gilbert will be following Strong to South Florida

So all the fans who said this from day and one who were crucified on this board as disloyal were actually right all along?
You are assuming this is correct.
Maybe Mehringer wanted to go back to Texas to be with his buddy Herman. Maybe he felt his career trajectory would be better by taking a step back to move forward later. Maybe he realized he was over his head and did not want to continue to paddle Upstream with the Red Team, and go with Herman who has a winning record.

Wouldnt it be great if ash busted out a bona fide experienced oc? And that he and herman worked together to get drew out of the big 10 oc position he was clearly unqualified for- boy that would be a nice turn. Otherwise drew is an ungrateful disloyal youngster. Hope its former

I think when given the opportunity he ran straight out of Piscataway, I mean Dodge. Does anyone here bEieve Rutgers is challenging for the B1G title-or even close in less than 3 ;>) yeas? Not even sure RutgersAL...

Also, though I'm no coach, over time it seems that unless you have the dogs (quality recruits) NO coach can do much on the field. I wonder if Pikiell knows anything about football...

Win-win for all. Keep an eye on DM. He's going to be a top notch coordinator one day with several more years of tutelage under Herman. Rutgers and Ash can reset and pretend the experiment that was this year's disaster never happened. If Ash can get a sucessful OC, he'll get 3-4 more chances to get six wins.

I stand corrected on the Texas coaching staff I named and will edit my reply to AYN to reflect it's the old staff from Strong I posted and they might not be there under Herman.
Thanks for letting me know and it was my fault for just looking at the names and not bios to see who hired them.
I don't care what kind of budget Texas has, it has to be equivalent at least to tOSU and their wr coach made about half of what drew made here at rutgers as OC.

So without any knowledge at all I gotta think this was mutual or drew was sufficiently concerned about his leash here.

All that sais, perhaps the role is a co oc type deal. In that case it makes more sense
I don't know what Texas budget is but NU will have 3 position coaches making $400,000+ next year(0ne of them is the WR coach). So if NU can afford it Texas damn sure can if the head coach wants it that way.

Not too sidetrack too much but saw that Matt Canada is a candidate for the LSU OC spot under Orgeron.

Notice it is for an OC position.

However, he is not gone so we will have to see how this plays out.

My opinion on our board is we just pay what we need to retain him.

Since Pitt is now receiving a full share of ACC money it should be doable (and the fact that Pitt doesn't have to invest $400 million to build a new stadium should be easy LOL!!!!).

Seriously, when you play in a Big Boy League this is par for the course.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Of course it's for an OC position I just that, lol.

You can increase his pay but if he wants to go he'll go and it's unlikely you'll be able to go as far as LSU. They just made Dave Aranda the highest paid assistant in college football with a salary of 1.8M.

I'm not saying they will go that far for Canada but the point is they have deeper pockets than most...including Pitt. It doesn't mean he will leave, he might not be chosen or for whatever reason he might want to stay but it's not likely you can compete on financial footing with LSU.

Ultimately, it comes down to what is important to him and his career.

Under Pitt's new administration (Chancellor,AD,HC) I believe Pitt will now offer financial incentives commensurate with his ability and accomplishments (finalist for Broyles Award).

Personally, I think when Matt Canada leaves Pitt it will be for a Head Coaching position.

We will have to give this time to play out and we can have further discussions when the final result is known.

My thoughts at this time is he will remain at Pitt for whatever reasons.

In any event, I trust Pat Narduzzi's judgement (showing signs of being an excellent HC) to help in the retention of Matt or the selection of a very capable new OC (if required) as Pat has demonstrated previously.

We have a couple of active Threads going on our board about this topic (stop on by if interested).

The new era Pitt Administration is committed to improving Pitt football now and in the future.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Drew will be the "Passing Coach" aka Co-OC at Texas.

I wonder how Texas fans feel about this after our season?
Does it matter that much? Herman is still the HC with the offensive background on top of the pyramid so not sure it's as big a deal as it may have been here with Ash a defensive coach. Plus who's the other OC at Texas? Have they named one yet. I haven't seen.

I would bet that all of those position coaches that make that kind of money have earned their bones experience wise and have a proven recruiting record background. Correct me if I'm wrong on that. Mehringer does not have either experience or a proven recruiting track record at D1 level. 1 and a half years is not a track record.

One of them I would say yes he has earned the check he is getting. One I would say should be a little bit before he got what he is getting but he has done a great job. The last one has only been a D1 coach for 3 years going on 4. He has performed very well especially in recruiting since he has been at D1 schools(we are his 3rd) but probably is over paid. He got a $185,000 raise to come to NU from Arizona for the same position he was in.

Another year like last year and Ash would almost be forced to make a move. Think it was a smart move by mehringer from a total career perspective given how young we'll be next year. He's from Texas, bet going home is a big draw. He and Herman have a bromance and I'm sure that's nice to return to.

Wish him well and appreciate his efforts here. I guess we'll see pretty quickly next year the impact of a new coach. Hoping he wasn't ready and this turns out to be a boon for RU but doubtful that's the case.

Funny story - On Saturday I was walking downtown with a Rutgers Santa Hat on. A little girl pointed to me at me and said, "Look, it's Santa!" I said, "I'm not Santa!" The father saw the hat and asked if Santa was a Rutgers fan. I said if he was, he'd get us a new offensive coordinator for Christmas.

Yes Rutgers, there is a Santa Claus!

Well time to move on. We did have a pretty bad offense this year. Hopefully it won't hurt recruiting. If we get a top name OC then it looks like a step up. We are probably locked into a spread offense now, if for nothing else for continuity's sake with our current players and offensive recruits. The new OC is a key hire that could catapult us forward and help retain recruits. Choose wisely Coach Ash and please don't limit your selection to those you worked with in the past, like Kyle Flood did when he first took over.
His youth actually cost him. That or his hair style.
