I feel in the end, this is the best opportunity to regenerate some hype for the program. With that said, it's hard for me to see the fault for offensive production falls squarely on DM. For those that feel he wasn't a good fit, how do we know we are not gonna say the offense will look exactly the same next year? How do we know how much freedom DM had because Ash has gone on record multiple times defending the scheme despite the players not being a good fit. I'm under the impression he had a pretty short leash. Despite stats, the scheme was far from vanilla and if you need a reminder what vanilla looks like then look at some film from when fudd was co-oc.

EVERYONE IS SAYING FOLLOW THIS..THROWING OUT NAMES...Ash is going to hire someone from the OSU..Iowa tree that has a connection to himself and staff.and RU is NOT changing the offense..so it has to be an OC who has run this type power spread.
Look for the name Todd Fitch.
Currently runs the spread under Skip Holtz at Louisiana Tech. Previously OC for a year at BC. He and Ash worked together at Iowa State 2004-06. His offense was #8 in nation for total offense and #5 in scorinoffense. Seasoned. 51 years old

I think more information will be coming out in the near future on why the move was made.
However, I think Drew leaving may turn out to be beneficial for Rutgers.
Ash now has the opportunity to pick a new OC with additional experience.

who care what job Drew took..hes gone..and RU has a great chance to be better in long run now. what they do with this chance is a big move for ASH long term how things work out
We should look to 25-year old Frank Sardoni Jr. from Roxbury, NJ who won this year's Madden Tournament. Can't be any worse than Mehringer.

I'm 5 months older than Drew and don't make anywhere near 450k, I feel like a total failure
This is addition by subtraction. DM was in over his head. He was not ready for a job like this. Rutgers fans should be happy. You wont lose any recruits.
I did not see this coming. I am 100% sure he left on his own accord to advance his career. It is much easier to turn Texas around with their tradition and self recruiting and he will probably become OC in the near future.

It seems Rutgers has the lowest assistant coach salary pool in the Big 10 and it is half the size of Ohio St. $450k for an offensive coordinator is not that much, but Rutger's had a young OC with limited experience, so the pay seems appropriate. It sounds like he needs more seasoning and going to Texas is the best option for all involved. Good luck with your search as I'd love to see you guys beat Ohio St and Michigan!

this....he can take a lesser job without the pressure to work his rep back up again rather than take the risk if he fails here another year he possibly would be canned and labeled poison. This move to me shows for whatever reason the kid is not ready, never should have been hired here. Ash has the opportunity now to go out and hire someone qualified with experience and hopefully Hobbs steps up to the plate with a check so he can do that.

Was just about to post the same thing. He was under contract, Ash could dictate when he leaves, but basically by letting him go now said good riddance. I think this was a mutual parting, maybe some nudging as Ash now gets to fix his mistake.
Guy was pushed out. He had a 2 year contract so Ash held all of the cards as to when he was gonna let him leave. Leaving like this leads to only one conclusion - he was unwelcomed.
Guys it's pretty simple. If Ash didn't want him back the replacement will be announced VERY shortly. You don't let the announcement of a guy taking a demotion to leave you happen without having the response ready to go. (FYI I'm just leaving the Eagles game so I don't know how long this has been out so hopefully no news yet doesn't mean we're screwed).

I don't think a contract gives Ash the power to retain an employee, does it? If Mehringer was being nudged out I would think that it would happen after the recruiting process and not risk losing the new recruits.
Have no idea. Tried finding it, but just saw "spread." Fitch has had 3 stints as OC for Skip Holtz--ECU, USF and now La Tech.
The only way this is bad is if he left on his own accord, because Ash disturbingly gave him a vote of confidence after the pitiful year he had. I hope he was nudged along by Ash knowing the kid was in way over his head, and the vote of confidence was nothing more than coach speak. This is a great opportunity to right a wrong. Long-term couldn't be better.

I think that Texas bought out Mehringer's contract, that Herman wants to do the same magic with Mehringer at Texas that they did at Huston.
