This is a non-issue....all coaches know each other, this isn't territorial or something where you benefit by having a new staff.....You run the risk of having any established relationships with future kids in 2017 and 2018 and any 2016 all starting from scratch.....you actually fall further behind by overhauling everything.
If anything should have been learned, it was when Ash and the staff had their clocks cleaned after getting hired and not properly retaining some of the existing staff, thinking they were getting "better" players simply because the impression was Flood and the prior staff weren't aggressive enough on the recruiting trail.....but because everything associated with the prior staff suddenly became associated with subpar recruiting, RU lost significant ground with the recruiting class for 2016 and took a bunch of "reaches" with names that had little to no D1 offers in some instances.....I won't remind folks again on how a kid with D2 offers suddenly got a RU offer and 4 days later, dropped RU for Boston College because the relationship established with a then former RU recruiting coach/etc, was "dropped".
That particular player probably won't see the field for football purposes, but if the prior staff offered some or all of the late Ash offerees, fans would have torched the Hale Center. But since Ash got a clean slate and said and is doing all the right things, he gets a pass for the clean up that should have been frankly better than what we received.
In basketball, you only have so many spots and the difference between having a full roster and not is back-breaking. We cannot assess anything with either football or basketball frankly as far as talent, because the game day coaching and overall coaching was so bad on a lot of levels. We may have more talent in both sports, but Flood, Rossi did little to nothing with the talent and work ethic and Eddie essentially coaches offense and ball movement, but neglected all the other important items (rebounding, boxing out, defensive sets, close outs.....) all of the things that a team like Virginia preaches each and every day and gets away with beating better talent most nights in the ACC.
It's not rocket science folks, the head coach dictates the work ethic, if your Head Coach was forced to take classes to earn a degree and had other hurdles reducing his recruiting efforts, the assistant coaches will follow. If you have a leader that demands your accountability, you turn up the efforts and grind, or you will find yourself working elsewhere in a year.
Keeping some semblance for a year is not doing some harm that somehow kills the program.....these are kids that need or deserve some continuity during a rocky time in the program....if you flush out everyone, just put a for sale sign up for the entire roster. You cannot compare what happened with Eddie, he was not a college coach and needed to have the current assistants to at least field a team in his first year....if he didn't, Myles Mack was headed to Seton Hall and others were out the door. Just because Eddie didn't coach well and RU bottomed out, doesn't mean that Pikiell is doomed because he decides to keep an assistant or two.
I actually would be more worried that you brings in a small time Stony Brook staff and asking them to recruit at a B1G level....Van Macon and Shoes are familiar with what's out there and they are aware of each other. I hope fans don't create false issues with non-facts, I've been in the gyms over the years and folks here posting frankly just haven't and aren't credible enough to comment on the topic.
Give Pikiell the chance to assess the staff and let him figure out whether the current staff is good enough or not. If he chooses to keep them, it's his choice...if he replaces them in a year, then that's fine as well, at least he works with the staff and has someone to help them get to know 13 players, their families, friends and everything else regarding what it will take to win some games next year.
