I noticed BAC mentioned the same thing, but why not go for a compete overhaul? I understand some guys are close to Shoes and others to Van, but shouldn't we look for the best candidates for the job? Do we sacrifice competency for continuity?

If the money's not there for significant improvements then we're in trouble, and keeping one or more assistants for a few more wins and closer losses is shortsighted .... Am I missing something?

We did it under several coaching regimes. Jordan kept Cox and Macon and Cox left a year later year with Seagears; eventually Étou transferred and Butts decommitted.

If someone's here to keep 1-2 existing players on the roster, are we truly rebuilding or are we repeating history?

Why would a high school player or coach think Rutgers is serious about turning it around if the same assistant from a historically bad season is still employed and recruiting for us? Did Ash keep Flood people? Did he not get rid of the popular "keep chopping"?

Let's hope Pikiell does it right.

Unless one of the current assistants is the lead on a four-star kid from 2017, and he said he's going to pick us, I don't think it's a big loss from a business standpoint. Obviously no one likes to see anyone lose their job, but this is the business they have chosen.

Is anyone more important than Sanders? Because he's staying regardless. Why are we harping on this?

I know, he's great. But one player is not bigger than the program. He also was suspended twice. Can we rely on him?!

If we hire the right assistants, I'm confident the new staff can find a solid guard to work in with Williams and Johnson.

I'm assuming everyone was fine if Hurley brought in his own guys. Why can't we do the same with Pikiell?

Disagree. We don't need a complete overhaul for the sake of a complete overhaul, and just because somebody worked on the previous staff doesn't mean he didn't do great work. Now, maybe we don't have anybody who fits that description, I don't know. But I don't see firing people for the sake of a catch phrase. Let's let Pikiell get to campus before we fire everybody else.

But posters think an assistant is staying or should be staying before Pikiell gets to campus.

When I hear someone's invisible in the gyms up and down the coast or in NJ, I get concerned. That's from high school media, national scouts and coaches in NJ.

We followed two big recruits and never got an official - did Jordan fail or did our assistant miscalculate our chances? Can someone catch on to a player before he starts gaining big offers?

Who should I listen to exactly? I want good assistants who evaluate talent. Let's stop chasing kids who will go to the biggest school or biggest dufflebag and do a better job scouting kids and their potential.

In 2015, we offered kids before seeing them play. Just a shoot around. And kids we knew probably wouldn't qualify. Crazy!

Would like to see the addition of a Director of HS Relationships.....same position that Rick Mantz has on the football side. We need to start having more communications with the state HS coaches and their coaches' associations (camps, clinics, etc.).

I agree completely with new guys unless there is a guy whose done a really good job and deserves to stay. I don't want to see everybody fired until Pikiell can make the assessment of what he needs. I realize its just some guys talking on the fan board, but for the staff remaining, we are talking maybe another couple of extra paydays, time to find someplace to land, etc. I have no need to take an "off with their heads" approach.

I think we're having a disconnect. I'm saying we don't need to keep any assistants in order to keep players because Corey is staying no matter what. So yeah, it's time to start from scratch.

And for the record, one suspension was from playing in an unsactioned event, which from my understanding, provided an unclear message as to its sanctioned status. (Could be wrong in the last part)

My opinion is that Pikiell knows what he wants in his staff. The speculation in the media was that Shoes may stay because of a previous relationship with him....This is the biggest challenge in Pikiell's basketball coaching life, he will put together the best possible staff for him that also fits within the salary range.

The idea that message board posters know better than Pikiell regarding what he needs for HIS staff is kinda silly.

And I assume we could have said the same about Eddie Jordan when we hired him.

I can be both trusting of Pikiell and give my thoughts on what we ought to do. It's not rocket science.

Trust in Pikiell sounds nice and all, and I wil. Then again I didn't come in the handful of threads you created and reply with "anybody trying to play athletic director is silly."

We all have opinions. Let's embrace them without an attempt to end the conversation with some version of "Trust Pikiell."

Saying that a person didn't get the job done and should go is a world different from saying, "we need to get rid of everybody because we need a clean start." The former is evidence-based and rational, the latter is sloganeering.

Head coaches have relationships with lots of assistant coaches due to camps, meeting on the recruiting trail etc. I wouldn't at all be surprised if Pikiell has relationships with several HM assistants.

Ever since Coach Jordan was fired the Rutgers assistants have basically been their own boss and have probably been fielding calls and making calls about gigs.

I once had a 2 hour meeting with a D1 assistant three days after his HC was fired. His phone was buzzing non stop, during our meeting, with "inquiries".

If the new coach chooses to keep guys then I will assume those are the best guys for the job. If not, fine. But I'm not going to say clean house for cleaning house's sake no more than I'll say keep them for continuity's sake.

Okay....valid points.

Here's one....former Pikiell teammate who is now an assistant coach at Buffalo.... Donyell Marshall. With Calhoun advising Pikiell this could create a minor buzz. He could be a good big man coach and 6'9 Marshall walking into a top recruits game wearing Rutgers gear may be a good thing. They may not know him but they will certainly ask "who's the big guy"...lol

I think it would be unusual if he did not bring at least one guy from Stony Brook, but, I could be wrong.

This is a non-issue....all coaches know each other, this isn't territorial or something where you benefit by having a new staff.....You run the risk of having any established relationships with future kids in 2017 and 2018 and any 2016 all starting from scratch.....you actually fall further behind by overhauling everything.

If anything should have been learned, it was when Ash and the staff had their clocks cleaned after getting hired and not properly retaining some of the existing staff, thinking they were getting "better" players simply because the impression was Flood and the prior staff weren't aggressive enough on the recruiting trail.....but because everything associated with the prior staff suddenly became associated with subpar recruiting, RU lost significant ground with the recruiting class for 2016 and took a bunch of "reaches" with names that had little to no D1 offers in some instances.....I won't remind folks again on how a kid with D2 offers suddenly got a RU offer and 4 days later, dropped RU for Boston College because the relationship established with a then former RU recruiting coach/etc, was "dropped".

That particular player probably won't see the field for football purposes, but if the prior staff offered some or all of the late Ash offerees, fans would have torched the Hale Center. But since Ash got a clean slate and said and is doing all the right things, he gets a pass for the clean up that should have been frankly better than what we received.

In basketball, you only have so many spots and the difference between having a full roster and not is back-breaking. We cannot assess anything with either football or basketball frankly as far as talent, because the game day coaching and overall coaching was so bad on a lot of levels. We may have more talent in both sports, but Flood, Rossi did little to nothing with the talent and work ethic and Eddie essentially coaches offense and ball movement, but neglected all the other important items (rebounding, boxing out, defensive sets, close outs.....) all of the things that a team like Virginia preaches each and every day and gets away with beating better talent most nights in the ACC.

It's not rocket science folks, the head coach dictates the work ethic, if your Head Coach was forced to take classes to earn a degree and had other hurdles reducing his recruiting efforts, the assistant coaches will follow. If you have a leader that demands your accountability, you turn up the efforts and grind, or you will find yourself working elsewhere in a year.

Keeping some semblance for a year is not doing some harm that somehow kills the program.....these are kids that need or deserve some continuity during a rocky time in the program....if you flush out everyone, just put a for sale sign up for the entire roster. You cannot compare what happened with Eddie, he was not a college coach and needed to have the current assistants to at least field a team in his first year....if he didn't, Myles Mack was headed to Seton Hall and others were out the door. Just because Eddie didn't coach well and RU bottomed out, doesn't mean that Pikiell is doomed because he decides to keep an assistant or two.

I actually would be more worried that you brings in a small time Stony Brook staff and asking them to recruit at a B1G level....Van Macon and Shoes are familiar with what's out there and they are aware of each other. I hope fans don't create false issues with non-facts, I've been in the gyms over the years and folks here posting frankly just haven't and aren't credible enough to comment on the topic.

Give Pikiell the chance to assess the staff and let him figure out whether the current staff is good enough or not. If he chooses to keep them, it's his choice...if he replaces them in a year, then that's fine as well, at least he works with the staff and has someone to help them get to know 13 players, their families, friends and everything else regarding what it will take to win some games next year.

I don't know if that is necessary because of the small number if recruits needed per year as compared to football. What is needed is breaking through with the top NJ high school powers that have the difference makers who can make Rutgers a winning program.

I would also be concerned about bringing the entire sb staff. But i am not concerned about wiping the slate clean either. Jordans staff has a bad rep re theirblack of presence on recruiting trail. I would understand making a clean break from that rep. Making clean break did not hurt mike rices recruting.

I wouldnt keep assistants just to keep players.

Per reports, Pikiell and Shoes are friendly.

Thus I expect Shoes to stay- and if he does - I hope that means Sanders, Laurent; Freeman and Thiam do as well - since they're all close to Shoes.

I want Shoes to stay.

For this reason, i want Shoes to stay. There is a nice foundation already here and i would prefer to keep these 4 players on board

EXACTLY! What is the downside to keeping shoes if he's brought in our best recruits? Priority 1 should be keeping these players and if shoes does that he should stay. If we get rid of shoes and lose these players it'll set the program back even further and be an epic mistake

I think you are way of base Ash got his clock cleaned recruiting. It is a nice sound bite but wrong. Was it a great class? No but because there was only a short time between his hiring and signing day. Next year will be the first true test of his recruiting. We made the mistake of hiring Flood to keep a recruiting class together. The entire staff's performance warranted a complete make over. On the surface it appears bball staff needs a complete turnover. The only one with any chance if staying would be Shoes as he was only here a short time, seemed to make some progress and had prior relationship with Pickiel.

Wow...this post just made me "SMH" and you know how much I respect you Hawk. Anyway:

- EVERY coach in our football program had to go - PERIOD - it was a ****-show on-and-off the field and I'm not even going to bother getting into it (again). Ash needed a clean break from the past, immediately, and got it done.

- our class, when Flood was fired, was rated 54th (Rivals) and 57th(247). It was filled with "reaches," kids with no or a low # of P5 offers, etc etc, and nobody with the slightest modicum of sanity expected Ash to do anything recruiting-wise, in those 2 months, because of the damage done by the prior regime.

- If Pikiell decides to keep someone, fine, but it's hard to say that he SHOULD keep ANYBODY who was previously associated with this God-awful program other than the kids on scholarship.

The program is a knock down. Tear the entire thing down. Start from scratch.
I completely disagree with this. Sanders Laurent freeman Williams doorson and Diallo are all talented guys. Supposedly Johnson is as well. That is seven players for the new coach to work with. That is a good start. He needs to bring in a few more guys and get this thing going. If he has to completely rebuild with all new players his chance of succeeding go down dramatically.

Nuts....the football thing is an opinion on what players were recruited and what players didn't stick around.....Ash didn't flush out every Flood recruit, as the ones that stayed were clearly on the same page with Ash, the new coaches and new regime.....there were others that weren't and could have stayed and helped with the remaining 2016 class and I've had people off the record that you probably would trust with this stuff, agree with me 100%, but they cannot comment on things like I can. We heard a lot of the same complaints about Flood, but ironically only did it appear after he was fired, when it became open season.....recruiting rankings don't matter, RU had clear gaps at certain positions that we missed by not handling the outgoing staff properly.

You cannot flush out an entire staff until you give Pikiell a chance to see what he has in place with the assistants that were here and established the relationships with the current recruiting class and players. We can't ask Pikiell to come in and find three players in his first 30 days because some fans feel like the old staff is to blame for Eddie Jordan not coaching defense. We had 6'4" players playing Power Forward and 6'7" people playing center.....that's not exactly an appealing job to take on, if you have no roster to sell to a prospective coach.

RU needs to have a full roster for the first time in almost a decade this coming season. Every other coach that is hired across the country, inherits the staff and players and makes the most of what's there and that includes the chance to determine his staff. In fact, there are more success stories where players adapt and perhaps do better with a new voice, new perspective and approach.

Our assistants like Van Macon were much more involved with Rice as the coach vs Eddie, which is what EJ wanted....whether that was right or wrong, it was the choice.....they did no defensive drills, which is why we gave up 80+ points a night. Give the assistants a chance to meet with the new coach and go from there.....it's ultimately a easier transition to have someone there vs no one.

But remember the new assistant/s we bring in also have relationships with players, maybe have more connections, and possibly are recruiting some of the same players as the previous staff.

Maybe we hire someone who recruited some of our current players and there's a relationship built-in.

I understand it's not a black or white issue.

There are benefits to both options. I would just like to see what's out there.

I understand it's not a black or white issues.

There are benefits to both options. I would just like to see what's out there.

Carino threw out a name when he mentioned that Pikiell needs someone like AAU Coach and Jersey guy Brian Coleman. As the Sports U coach, he can probably pick his job.

@NewJerseyHawk, loved the comments you have posted and appreciate your insights.

You mentioned playing the game with sneakers, aau, etc to succeed as a program. I am not well versed in bball programs, but if you in charge with what happens the next 12 months, what would you do or change within the program? I know you mentioned getting AAU teams in the Rac for the summer and so on.

The reason I ask is within the first 2 months Chris Ash had left him imprint on the football program, bringing in the best of every area, within reason, which got fans, player and recruits excited. What's the bball equivalent?

Would like to see the addition of a Director of HS Relationships.....same position that Rick Mantz has on the football side. We need to start having more communications with the state HS coaches and their coaches' associations (camps, clinics, etc.).

Great suggestion!

NUTS....valid points, but the football staff also had some things come out like , the players talking back and not having the respect of the players as teachers. I'm not sure if those things were present with the BB staff...maybe, they were, but, nothing has surfaced.

The previous HC was able to get an extra position, Advisor, the O'Koren spot. Maybe, Pikiell uses that spot for this type of position. Could be a good plan.

I would like to hear an example of the outgoing staff not being handled properly. He kept two guys on longer than the others. At some point he must have come to a conclusion they didn't fit what he was looking fo and they were let go as well. You can't bring in a new coach and handcuff him by mandating he keep certain coaches, keep team mantras, etc. RU football needed a shakeup before it turned into a complete disaster. That is what Ash is doing. Only time will tell if he is successful.
