FWIW, I don't think Hurley did this. I could see him playing RU to get a better deal at URI, but I don't think he did it just to get publicity. Dumb move if he did, because he now looks like somebody who would play you.Doesn't really matter if they played RU or not anymore.
Rutgers has a new MBB HC and his name is not Hurley.
That's all I care about and let Hobbs decide if Hurley tried playing him and
someone in the Hurley camp was talking to the media about Danny's negotiating
to be the next RU MBB HC in order to make Danny Hurley look good and RU like the bride
left at the alter.
I was wondering if Hobbs had a strong indication from Hurley that he would take the job , even before Hobbs fired Jordan. Then pulled the rug out from under him this week to help burnish his future image.
This^ 100%. He cracked once as a player, and would have a good chance of doing so again under the pressure of turning this program around. Glad he backed out.If it really becomes the general consensus that Hurley engaged in intentional premeditated deception & disingenuous self-serving non-negotiation, it will reflect poorly on Hurley.
More likely, Dan Hurley just is not made out of the internal stuff that it would take to put up with the hardships that it will take to put the Rutgers rebuild on his shoulders and carry it to where it needs to go. I am quite convinced that Hurley only wants to be at a place where Basketball is THE sport... or is already a legendary program.
You could be right Skillet, but I believe his camp played the media to make sure Danny came out of the talks with RU looking better than he really was.FWIW, I don't think Hurley did this. People will give Hobbs benefit of doubt because they like the Ash hire. If prev. AD was here and same process played out, she would have been killed for not being able to get it done and for not getting a coach from bigger program.
This will be last time Hurley is considered based on spurning us twice!
Also, it looks like we have a solid coach. However back when we were looking to get rid of Eddie, if we said we were going to get Stony Brook coach, I think many would have felt it was the typical RU cheaping out.
Hobbs is looked at with Scarlet colored glasses until his coaches lose their first game.
Agree 100% MADHAT, and that is their job. But I don't think they started out to make this a big issue for the purpose of making us look like chumps. It's just that they didn't mind doing so once the process got underway. You could be right Skillet, but I believe his camp played the media to make sure Danny came out of the talks with RU looking better than he really was.
Either way, Hurley's camp was going to make it look like Danny was the good guy here and doing what's best for (Insert RU or RI here) by taking or rejecting the RU MBB HC position in my opinion
If he had done all this without his team spreading everything out in the press and the blogs, I wouldn't have minded. But he took the low road on this, especially trashing Barchi for no reason. In my book, you are allowed to consider something and change your mind -- no problem there. But do it professionally.Maybe I am less cynical, but I think Danny had interest but in the end decided not to pull trigger. He had a strong team coming back and knew it was best shot to get to dance versus taking over a rebuilding effort. If he is guilty of something, it was just being indecisive. If he gets to NCAA's, he will have some good opportunities and this might be more appealing then Rutgers to him. I don't think he set out to embarrass Rutgers or that he did embarrass Rutgers. Just like Lonergan, you pursue opportunities and weigh your options. Schiano did it with Miami and Michigan.

Bobby did a good job at Buffalo, lets see how he does at a school like ASU making him one of the good guys.Only good Hurley these days is Bobby, who is way beyond reach. We are fortunate not to have hired Danny, who has shown himself to be emotionally fragile.
Coaches always play up interest from other schools. When RU made that NIT run under Gary Waters, rumors of midwest schools coming after Waters prompted Always Nervous Mulcahy to extend him. Way game is played. Don't blame the Hurleys for using what leverage they can muster.

Personally, I think we dodged a bullet with Hurley. I never cared for him and he wasn't my first or second choice. Yes, he might have been the "sexy" pick because of HIS FATHER being a legend in NJ, but as a coach, he hasn't proven to me that he was suddenly worth triple his salary from URI.
Now that he has turned us down twice I think it's safe to say NO HURLEY's anymore and anywhere near the Rutgers program.
And even though my first and second choices (Sendek and Lonergan) didn't materialize, I am very pleased Hobbs chose someone like Pikiell who checked off all the boxes we need right now to succeed.
He's also guilty of opening his big f'n mouth during and after the "withdrawing from consideration" ********.Maybe I am less cynical, but I think Danny had interest but in the end decided not to pull trigger.
