He never was taking the job, don't you get it, now we can really do this the right way.
What makes you think that, NUTS? I mean, I can think of reasons (he seems to have gotten everything he wanted), but wondering why you say he was never coming here. Do you think this was all a game on his part and that he never had any interest? I really don't know. I just know we laid everything out there and then he walked away, basically confirming the low opinion I had of him to begin with.

If it makes everybody feel better about the situation, nobody's been hired yet and everybody who thinks they know stuff doesn't know much at all. Hobbs is going to make a good decision. He's just not going to rush into it.
I'd be fine if it took him a month and we never heard peep one if we end up with a great coach. But it is not just making a good decision. It's getting a great coach to come on board.

Before EJ was fired I felt RU needed a young energetic assistant from a big time program to take over. I think Duke's assistant coach Jon Scheyer would be a great choice. Like Ash, he is an assistant to one of the best head coaches in the sport. Besides being Duke's 10th all time scorer, he played 3 years professionally in Israel before returning to Duke as an assistant. Scheyer could join other past Duke guards who are now head coaches in Division 1 like Wojo, Amaker, and Chris Collins. I understand that he is only 28 years old. I bet many high school juniors remember watching him play on Saturdays and I think most parents would be happy to have them walk into their home and speak to them about the future of their son. I wouldn't be worried about whether he could relate to the players, the alumni or whether he could coach. I think his Duke education, his 6+ years with Coach K and his 3 years as a professional prepared him for this job.

Top Assistants from P5 (preferably B10 or ACC schools) with HC's who have great records including lots of NCAA trips and who have been around ten years or more should also be of considerable interest to Rutgers in its search for a HC.

Great basketball pedigree, hard nose recruiter, I wish more but I don't want to burn my source. if Rutgers is committed to upgrading facilities, RAC, etc. This hire will not only be great for you guys but for NJ Hoops as a whole. Be patient, don't forget when Hobbs was at SHU we were hearing McCaffrey and some others. Ended up being willard.

Masiello fits that description too

I know people keep pointing to Ash as a blueprint for possible clues of who he might turn to for the basketball hire. In the end maybe it ends up being an assistant but I don't think basketball coach/football coach hirings in college are similar. It's not often you see assistants take on big head jobs from an assistant role in basketball, where as you can see coordinators do it all the time in football.

In football you know there's some "executive" action and running of one side of the ball as a coordinator but in basketball I don't know how readily defined an assistant's role is from one program to the next. Outside of the Duke assistants Wojo, Collins, Dawkins I can't think of too many others who took over top programs from the assistant role. There may be a few but I don't think it's as common an occurrence as it is in football.

To me I think Willard is the blueprint for a possible clue of what direction he might go. A guy who had been a long time assistant to a big name coach (Pitino) and had some success as a HC running a lower level program. If you look at that then I think Dooley (Self) and Masiello (Pitino) are good possibilities. Of course he could stray from that a little with a guy like Pikiell who has less experience working under a big name (Calhoun) and success with his own program but still fits that general blueprint. At the very least, I still think likely to be someone with HC experience. I'd expect Hobbs to do his due diligence and interview assistants but the guy will likely have to wow him to get the job and pass by guys already with HC experience (especially ones who have worked along side big coaches).

BTW-Told Mas is not under consideration by RU.

That's a relief. I think if we hired him, we would get pummeled publicly. Fair or not, that's what would happen

The word here in Kentucky media as they prepare to play Stony Brook is that their BB HC will move on to Rutgers after they lose to Kentucky Tonight.
So bearing a real UPSET expect Stony Brook coach to be at Rutgers by Saturday

How would Kentucky media have inside info on RU and a school from New York???

This is a thread about speculation...just think this is even more speculation from the media.

Sorry I don't do tweets or look at them.
Fact one Hurley and wright pull their names yea Neither made the final cut.
We are not a draw to pull a P5 coach away.
I just looked him up this morning and his record is a slam dunk
2005–06 Stony Brook 4–24 2–14 9th
2006–07 Stony Brook 9–20 4–12 9th
2007–08 Stony Brook 7–23 3–13 8th
2008–09 Stony Brook 16–14 8–8 5th
2009–10 Stony Brook 22–10 13–3 1st NIT 1st Round
2010–11 Stony Brook 15–17 8–8 5th
2011–12 Stony Brook 22–10 14–2 1st NIT 1st Round
2012–13 Stony Brook 25–8 14–2 1st NIT 2nd Round

The man is a winner 7-11 winning seasons.
Use default logic who is left ?
We have to get a up and coming coach and Steve fills the bill he has taken Stony Brook to a post season dance for the last 5 years

Because they are reporters and the coach is sitting right their. And nobody at Stony Brook would be upset with Pikiell moving on - could be an open secret.

Yesterday it was being rumored that Hobbs had gotten the clearance from all who mattered (Barchi & co.) to climb to a higher altitude and very seriously reach out to candidates previously considered "un-reachable"
- some of the purveyors of these rumors were emphatically saying things like - "great get"... "Oh, you will be delighted" ... "A real upgrade"
Yet - there has not been any genuine 'new names' tossed out in the speculation - it is all just a huge bunch of the same semi-usual suspects being whirled around in the coach selection salad spinner ....
- just figure it is a waiting game, nobody knows anything, and the likelihood of a genuinely surprising selection is probably slim

I agree with you that going from assistant to head coach is less common in basketball than football. But I can think of a few more assistants who got their first HC job leading a Big East team at the time that the BE was the premier basketball league. Only one of these assistants was a failure as HC.

There are more and it's in the Shaheen Holloway/Kevin Payne thread. I've mentioned it in the past but I forgot to qualify it here. When I say assistants taking over a high level job, I mean leaving their current program and going to a new one. To me it's different. A promotion from within usually means a decent quality program is left behind because a coach retired or has left to a better place, not to mention it is a program you're familiar with. When you look for assistants that leave to take high level jobs outside their current programs there aren't many you can come up with.

Really the Duke assistants seem to be the most frequent ones and couple others but that's it. Wojo, Collins, Dawkins, Amaker about 10 years ago, Roy Williams to Kansas back in the 90s and Leonard Hamilton to Ok State back in the 80s. I knew all of those except Hamilton and maybe there are a couple other who went outside their current program to a high level job but it's not many and not a "bucket" I can point to and say look at so many examples of success or where I can go far outside one particular tree like Coach K's. I explain my thoughts a little more thoroughly in the other thread.

I'm not smart enough to know if his success would translate to success at RU. But here is another plus for Pikiell: his character

http://www.app.com/story/sports/college/2016/03/12/why-stony-brook-coach-steve-pikiell-rutgers-radar/81689762/

"in April 2014, after signing a contract extension that pushed his average salary above $300,000, Pikiell donated $50,000 back to the school. Half was earmarked for the men's basketball program, half to the Stony Brook Long Island Children's Hospital."

Hobbs clearly values stand-up guys like that.

Seems to me that high character should be a necessary but not sufficient condition for any hire.

So Cluess being the top target fulfills none of what the Hall guy was describing at all. Also, majority of fan base will not support the hire so looks like we were baited by the supposed person with credible sources.

ugh, I will support him if hired but it just seems like a hugely uninspired choice.

Hobbs didn't limit his FB coach search to the northeast, why are we limiting the bball search like this? Local guy, blah blah blah. Find someone young and CRAZY *** hungry to win. I hate to be an ageist but I doubt a 57 year old is going to to scratch and claw the other team's eyes out and out work every other coach (which frankly is what we need)

Trolls like attention and bringing up that they were wrong is just like telling them Good Job :chairshot:

As for leader in this horse race, no one knows for sure, but some act like they do and the rest panic after every candidate's name is mentioned and go into a frenzy when those not even being considered are said to be someone Hobbs is looking at.
