look no further than BYUs decision to wanna swing from the Chanticleers

Definitely was a gamble by BYU, especially with the lack of time to prepare. Basically the three days advance notice netted only two given the requisite travel across the country and adapting to an earlier timezone.

That’s comical. Everyone, including OSU, agreed to the rules before the season started. If in your opinion expecting Big Ten schools to stick to their word and the rules they all agreed to is sanctimonious, that says all that anyone needs to know about you. The end does not justify the means.
Here’s one for you. Through 5 weeks in Pac 12 play:
- Colorado is 4-0 (3-0 in conference bc they played an OOC game when another team cancelled on them). They missed two conference games bc USC and Az St had Covid issues (they haven’t had any).
- USC is 4-0 (4-0 in conference, only missed the Colo game which they had to back out on).
- Colo plays Utah, USC plays UCLA. If both win, USC wins Pac 12 South and goes to the championship... bc they cancelled their game against CU and there is no head to head tiebreaker. So then it falls to division record / wins and USC has one more bc of the Az St game (or else maybe bc of higher CFP ranking it’s not 100% clear to me).
- Meanwhile in the North, Washington is 3-1 and Oregon 3-2, playing this weekend, if Oregon wins a 4-2 team will play USC.
- Is it fair that Colorado is getting screwed by USC dodging their game cause of “rules”, or do you think in this screwed up season they should ditch the divisions and have Colo play USC (or maybe get put ahead of USC to play the Pac 12 N winner bc the Trojans were the one who had the Covid problem)? Sure they are playing based on the supposed “rules” up front (which as with ours had already been changed multiple times over), but I don’t think it’s right and think they should adjust the rules given the total chaos of this screwy football season.

Do you disagree?

PS unfortunately for Colorado in this case USC draws more television eyes and $$$ so I think they have much less chance of getting the “rules” changed once more (after they’ve already been changed numerous times) than OSU does

PS “that says all that anyone needs to know about you”? Cool bro, that one really hits hard haha. Funny how you’re trying to make a moral value call (it seems? “the ends don’t justify the means” oh my goodness how dire!) based on what one thinks is the fairest way to arbitrate an inherently weird and screwed up season!

In my view honoring agreements one has made is a moral value call. I believe in doing so on a personal level and expect the institutions I associate with to share those values. I used to think this was a broadly held value but listening to guys like you try to rationalize why it’s OK to change the rules after the fact makes me question that view. The irony is that this has no bearing on NU. I want NU to play OSU but not at the expense of the rules that EVERY BIG TEN SCHOOL agreed to abide by before this season began. Under those rules, if OSU does not play at least six games, Indiana University should be the Big Ten East’s representative for the Big Ten Conference Championship game.

No bearing? This is so shortsighted. We're basically losing our spot in the actual Big Ten Championship game to a team we already beat (either Iowa or Wisconsin). While I disagree completely with your view on the morality of this, that's fine-reasonable people can value different things in different situations. But I'm not on here making the case for Ohio State because I favor Ohio State.

The "actual" B1G championship involves a trophy, the other game is an also-ran bowl.

I didn't read all posts above but I feel there would be a great wailing and gnashing of teeth if our one loss was to Wisconsin, and they were 5-0

Changing the rules after the race is run sounds like Washington

The Big ten Championship game is played next Saturday the 19th. NU is playing. The winner of that game goes down on the books as the Big Ten Champions for 2020 and gets the trophy. That’s all I care about. The rest is window dressing.

Fair enough. I think we just have entirely different sets of values and goals, which is completely fine. You're right in a lot of ways.

I was so looking forward to the UM - duh-OSU game because UM is having a down year and the former rivalry between the two would likely cause duh-OSU to stomp UM into the turf. Harbaugh probably did the testing himself by gazing within. Dodged that bullet.

Shouldnt your values be not playing the season since the president of Northwestern and the other B1G schools, besides OSU, Iowa and Nebraska, voted and agreed not to play this season?
