Big Ten needs to figure something out. Preferably getting OSU a different game this week as we don't need to give them a bye week heading into playing us.

Unless the Big Ten changes the rules, they won't be playing us. If they find another game for them, they will.

could take ACC approach and bag the Illinois game so both teams have week off ahead of CCG

What? OSU won’t be playing in the championship game unless another game against a Big Ten opponent is scheduled for them this week. Any other accommodation beyond that one to get them into the Championship game and you will have anarchy in the Big Ten.

This definitely gives the Big Ten enough time to do something (i.e. schedule Maryland) if they want OSU in the Championship Game without looking awful and scrapping the previous six-game rule.

Or they might just get the message from OSU that they'd rather have a bye week and play for the CFP in a couple of weeks against Iowa/Wisconsin.

My vote :
—OSU needs to find an opponent, any opponent, this week and reach 6 game threshold.
—NU needs to play (and win ) the Rivalry game.

Honestly doesn’t this seem more palatable to OSU?
They won’t be moved down in CFP rankings for not playing. They get to avoid anyone getting injured in a probably meaningless 6th game (it won’t be against anyone ranked or even with a winning record).
They will get to play the winner of Iowa vs Wisconsin, 2 ranked teams, the winner of which will go up in the rankings ahead of the game with OSU.

What is this about playing the winner of Iowa vs. Wisconsin? Did I miss something. The Big Ten Championship game is Dec 19. Someone will be playing NU in that game. The Big Ten season is over after that as far as I know.

Make no mistake about it....The B1G WILL change the rule to let OSU in the Championship game. Hence, making that what?, the 4 th NU opponent who will have 2 weeks to prepare for us!!! They need to find someone for them to play.

Think most votes would be for NU to play and beat Indiana for the Conference Championship!

Does OSU need to play another game to make the playoff? I don't know. But I will say that there is no guarantee that Iowa and Wisconsin do not have an outbreak between now and then. Same goes for us, but Fitz has been knocking on wood all along.

I know the rule will change based on an AD vote by all big ten AD’s, however is a simple majority required or is there another voting threshold that needs to be met ( IE. 2/3rds majority, unanimous)

Nope. Indiana would rob our program for another program-defining opportunity on a big national stage against a big national power, solely because of B1G administrators. We won our division for the second time in three years - we deserve our shot against the best team in the East.

Narcissistically, maybe I share some of the blame for this early announcement? Perhaps Michigan decided to take the high road after seeing my post yesterday suggesting delaying the cancellation until it was too late to find a replacement game would be a sinister move against their nemesis.

I agree that giving OSU a bye week before playing us would be an injustice. Either they play this week or Indiana should be our opponent.

Quote:

"It is alternatively very clever/sinister. The earlier Michigan cancels the prospect of finding another team for OSU to play is enhanced. String OSU along and play the Florida State card and then cancel as the Buckeyes are getting ready to board their plane. Not sure too many Michigan fans will be losing a lot of sleep over Ohio State failing to qualify to play in the Big Ten Conference Championship."

They traditionally do things by consensus rather than a vote. I’m sure a vote wouldn’t be unprecedented, though. And likely in this case, I’d think.

Will be interesting to see where the AD’s of each school feel on the subject, if it does comes down to a vote.

Too bad, because I was looking for Ryan Day to hang around 80 on Harbaugh. Bad blood from before the season when Day told Jimbo to "mind his own business" after Coach Khaki accused dOSU of some practice irregularities.

Purdue is having COVID issues too. They just cancelled practice today. I wonder how much pressure there will be to send U of I to Columbus and force us to play IU.

I believe the reference was to the secondary game also being played in conjunction with the Big Ten Championship game.

I can't find a list of this weeks games but Purdue may not be able to play against Indiana. An OSU v Indiana rematch seems unlikely but who does UMD play. Are there any possible changes that do not result in rematches ? How about a Wisconsin V OSU and Minny v Indiana or vice versa

Us against Indiana, OSU vs. Illinois makes the most sense. Settle who is #2 in the Big Ten with our game against Indiana. Get Ohio State into the B1G CCG. From our perspective, beat Indiana = clinch the Fiesta. Beat Indiana AND Ohio State? You're looking at as good of a one-loss resume as there is in the country. At worst, lose to both, head to the Outback bowl for a good year.

The BIG has a "+1" format for all team who don't make the conference title this season.

Those "opponent TBD" games are to be played a week from this Saturday, the same day as the conference championship. By moving the BIG title up to noon, it gives the conference an opportunity to showcase Ohio State vs Iowa or Wisconsin in prime time...assuming the conference doesn't intervene and bump IU for the Buckeyes.

Do you have to play in at least six games to play in any of the Dec. 19 non-championship games? I don't think so. For Ohio State, getting a week off and beating Iowa or Wisconsin probably would have a negligible effect on whether they're invited to the CFP after that. Iowa/Wisconsin will be in the same neighborhood as NU ranking wise, and they're both considered bigger wins in the eyes of most of the country (not us of course). This is a blessing in disguise for OSU.

The ONLY thing going against OSU as far as getting into the CFP is six total games feels shaky, especially compared to someone like Cincinnati or Coastal Carolina or even Florida, A&M, and the Clemson/ND loser. Otherwise, a 6-0 Ohio State that beats Wisconsin decisively next week and was held out of the Big Ten Championship through little fault of their own would probably get in.

You mean this weekend? What would that accomplish? If we lost to Indiana we’re still the West champion according to the current rules, and would still play OSU in the CCG.

I think the most palatable solution is just leaving Ohio State out of Indy and let the committee decide their playoff fate after their "+1" game. Their high preseason ranking/brand is enough of an advantage.

There is luck on and off the field every season. All 14 programs signed up for this knowing the virus was going to create havoc.

Um, no, the easiest solution is Ohio State doesn't play this week, and plays championship week against Iowa/Wisconsin, while NU gets its HAT game against Illinois and then faces Indiana in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Why would Indiana play? If they play they lose the tie breaker and would be second place in the east

I agree. Based on the rules set out at the beginning of the season, this is what should happen. To me there have been no unforeseen extenuating circumstances that should have the Big Ten deviate from this plan.

This is not complicated.

Everyone went into this Big Ten season knowing COVID was an opponent.

Neither Northwestern nor Indiana have had to cancel a game because of Covid on their end.

Ohio State did. And, if we're being honest, Ohio State probably should have had to cancel last week against Michigan State, but somehow avoided scrutiny for its decision to play.

It is not Indiana's responsibility, nor NU's, nor anyone else's, to move their schedules around for the Buckeyes so they can play in the Big Ten Championship.

I want NU to clobber Illinois this weekend. Then I want a matchup with Indiana for a chance at a BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP.

Ohio State still has a clear path to the CFP without anyone lifting a finger. Just leave everything alone, and it mostly works out for all involved.

It's not complicated for the Big Ten to fix the problem it created, either. And it's also more competitive, and more fair to everyone involved. This is a situation where strict formalism with respect to a one-off rule is ridiculous. Our players have made a lot of sacrifices this year, and they've beaten every team in the West. They deserve to play in the Big Ten Championship, not the "Big Ten Championship" with the undercard drawing double the ratings.

They've already changed one rule by allowing the rescheduling of games. What caused them to do that?

Why is inconveniencing the other conference members "more fair"?

Everyone signed up for these rules. Ohio State already got their advantage with a high preseason ranking.

No need to cater to them even further. Their "+1" match up will be in primetime against Iowa or Wisconsin. The conference already moved the title game to noon eastern to as a contingency and to boost ratings without a "marquee" program being involved.

There is a still a shot Ohio State still gets in without a title game appearance

I think people are advocating hurting them by making them play NU in the championship game, thus handing OSU a loss.

Easy solution if they want to do it: move Rutgers vs Maryland to "champions week", play Minnesota vs Wisconsin that same weekend (so everyone else can play West vs East) and schedule Maryland vs OSU for this weekend.

Is it fair to force a team to prepare for a playoff contender with half a week? Does anyone care about perceived fairness? (No and no.)

Where's the inconvenience to just changing the number of required games to 5? All changing the rule does is make the East champion, as determined on the football field, play against the West champion, as determined on the football field. It's more about catering to us by giving us the game we deserve, in my mind, but I guess people have differences of opinion on our preferred matchup. I could not care less about OSU's playoff appearance, personally.
