Having all the high school marching bands and their families helped with attendance. After the half, when the band kids left, the endzone and student corner seemed pretty empty.

Announced attendance over 37,000. I'm guessing about 1/3 of them left in the 3rd quarter, especially on the east side and the end zone.

I’m not sure why they don’t ask the bands to stay for the duration of the game. They said that has 2,700 band members there, which likely means close to 7,500 if parents attended. Would be nice to keep them in the stadium for the whole game.

They used to have a band day at Penn State years ago before they got so money hungry — and that's when the stadium was smaller. Went up there for the season opener, and the seating spaces must have been about 18 inches wide. If Ryan is modified, I'm definitely in favor of cutting the seating capacity by a couple thousand to give fans a reasonable space to park their butts.

I understand why some of the bands leave right away after halftime as they've got long drives back home, but ETHS, Niles North, and the Maine Township schools????

And they were in Rocky Miller Park preparing for some time beforehand. Even though they left early, it was a pretty long day. My first dozen or so Cats games were on band day - my dad was a music teacher. As a kid I successfully fought to have my mom drive up separately on a couple of occasions so I could stay for the whole game. She's a keeper.

Oh sorry. The crowd size looked pretty good on TV and would expect many more next week. A note, slightly off subject but noticed that NU got about a dozen sentences of coverage on the bottom of page 11 in the Trib., while the illini got a full page. Could that have something to do with Fitz basically shutting out the press? Oh and it looks like they are serving beer down in Rantoul way. I know they serve it in Minneapolis and think Purdue now but Evanston, still a no.

Not how journalism works, imo. If there was something clickbait-worthy about yesterday's game, they would write it even if Fitz decided to hold practices on the moon. It was a nice, boring win, so no clickbait. On the other hand, Illinois losing that game was quite a story-- just not the type of press they want...

Reading the article about Illinois serving beer I was absolutely stunned at the poor beer selection. If NU starts selling I certainly hope they do a better job in that department.

The beer sale story is what brought the Trib to Champaign. That and the fact they could go to 3-0 for the first time in eight years. Journalistic decisions are made based on "story lines." It had absolutely nothing to do with whether Fitz opens practice or not (which he did to media the week before Stanford, by the way).

Don't want anything close to what Saban is doing at 'Bama - keeping track on how long students stay at games via an app w/ student losing points (towards getting tickets for big games and/or conf. championship/playoff) if they don't stay.

We sit on the East side on the 40 yd line and it was REALLY hot facing the sun the whole afternoon. We did stay the whole time but not many around us did - it was quite uncomfortable. Winning made it better but I can see why some left - especially families with kids and older fans,

A $50 cab ride to the stadium, cocktails served at the stadium (only in Vegas), overpriced water, brawls on the UNLV side of the stadium (well, they were selling cocktails) and an NU win despite comically bad play by our secondary (which unfortunately became a trend later in the season).

Next year, UNLV will be moving into the Raiders' new NFL stadium just on the other side of the interstate from the strip. That's going to be nuts, and you know it will be the favorite road trip destination for every college and NFL fan whose teams are playing there.

Doubt the bands count. I believe NU uses tickets sold as the basis for attendance, not butts in the seats. No way there were 37,000+ fannies in the bleachers Saturday. Tickets sold probably reflects Io_a and dOSU fans who bought season tickets to get seats for their games in Evanston.

I didn't know you could bring fans into the stadium. Where do you plug them in? I could have used one
Speaking of plug ins, I was sure my phone would cr@p out before the end of the game, and I was a little early, so I searched high and low for an outlet and found one in an obscure corridor on the main floor. I was sure some officious lower level functionary would tell me it was not permitted, so I kind of stood in front of the cord and played with my phone whilst it charged. Just enough to get me through the game and the plane ride home. I got home with 6% battery left
